Chapter 5: The First Betrayal
I had spent years believing my father’s death was the worst thing that could happen to me.
I was wrong.
The worst thing was discovering that the people who remained after he was gone might have been the reason he needed to protect me.
Robert placed the final section of the blue file on the table.
*THE FIRST BETRAYAL*
The words stared back at me.
My father had chosen them.
Not “financial concerns.””
Not “business dispute.””
Not “important information.””
Betrayal.
A word people used when trust was broken.
When someone close chose themselves over you.
I looked at Rachel through the library window.
She was still standing there.
Waiting.
“Should we bring her in?”” Ethan asked.
Robert shook his head.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because your father wanted the truth revealed in a specific order.””
I almost laughed.
Even from beyond the grave, my father was still controlling the timing of everything.
“Of course he did.””
Robert looked at me.
“Lena.””
I knew that tone.
It was the same tone teachers used before telling you something you didn’t want to hear.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a letter.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
My father’s handwriting.
My hands immediately became unsteady.
*Lena,*
*If you are reading this, then someone has attempted to access what I left for you.*
I stopped.
My eyes blurred.
Because seeing his name on paper wasn’t the same as remembering him.
It felt like he was in the room.
Like he was sitting across from me at the kitchen table.
Like he was about to tell me everything would be okay.
But the next sentence destroyed that feeling.
*I wish I could have explained everything myself.*
I swallowed.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Do you want me to read it?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
This was mine.
My father’s words.
My truth.
I continued.
*There are people who will tell you they are protecting you. Some may even believe it. But protection without honesty becomes control.*
I looked up.
My mother’s face flashed in my mind.
Then Rachel’s.
Then Victor’s.
*The first betrayal was not about money. It was about information.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Information.
Not money.
Not the trust.
Something else.
I read the next paragraph.
*Five months before my accident, I discovered that private company records had been accessed without authorization. The person responsible knew my passwords, my security procedures, and my business schedule.*
I looked at Robert.
“Someone close to him.””
Robert nodded.
“That was his concern.””
I continued.
*I initially believed the person was trying to steal from me. I later realized they were searching for something else.*
Something else.
“What were they looking for?”” Ethan asked.
I turned the page.
The answer was there.
*They were looking for proof.*
A chill ran through me.
Proof of what?
The next page was missing.
I froze.
“What?””
Robert looked at the file.
“The page was intentionally separated.””
“By who?””
He examined the folder.
“Your father.””
“Why would he remove part of his own letter?””
Robert’s face became serious.
“Because he wanted the information revealed only after a specific event occurred.””
I stared at him.
“What event?””
Robert pointed to the documents.
“An unauthorized trust request.””
The room went silent.
My father had planned for this.
Not because he knew exactly who would do it.
But because he knew someone would try.
I looked back at the letter.
There was one final sentence.
*The person who betrayed me is still close to you.*
My heart sank.
Still close.
Not was close.
Is.
I put the letter down.
“I need to talk to Rachel.””
Robert nodded.
“Not alone.””
I looked at Ethan.
He immediately understood.
“I’m coming.””
We left the library together.
The ballroom looked completely different now.
Two hours earlier, it had been filled with flowers, laughter, and promises about the future.
Now there were abandoned champagne glasses and empty chairs.
A celebration turned into an investigation.
Rachel was waiting near the entrance.
When she saw us approaching, she straightened.
“Lena.””
Her voice sounded normal.
That bothered me.
After everything, how could she sound normal?
“You tried to access the trust.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Robert stepped forward.
“The system recorded the attempt.””
Rachel looked at him.
“You’re monitoring me?””
“No,” Robert replied.
“The trust is protected.””
She looked at me.
“You think I’m trying to steal from you?””
I wanted to say yes.
But something stopped me.
Because my father’s letter wasn’t accusing her.
It was warning me.
There was a difference.
“What were you looking for?”” I asked.
Her eyes softened.
“Lena.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to call me that and avoid answering.””
She looked hurt.
Maybe she was.
Maybe that was what made everything so confusing.
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“Because your mother embarrassed you.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Because I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””
That hit her.
For the first time, Rachel looked older.
Tired.
She glanced toward the floor.
“Your father would hate seeing this.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone kept saying that.
Everyone used him.
Everyone claimed to know what he would want.
“You keep talking about Dad.””
“Because I loved him.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked away.
Silence.
That was the answer.
“Rachel.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want this to happen tonight.””
“What didn’t you want?””
“For you to open that file.””
My entire body went still.
“You knew about the file?””
Her eyes widened.
Too late.
She had revealed it.
Robert noticed too.
“How?”” he asked.
Rachel looked trapped.
“I…”
“How did you know about Daniel’s private instructions?””
She didn’t answer.
I stared at her.
My aunt.
The woman who held me after my father died.
The woman who brought me soup when I was sick.
The woman who just tried to access my trust.
“How long have you known?”” I whispered.
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Since before your father died.””
The hallway seemed to disappear.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I tried to stop him.””
“Stop him from what?””
“From confronting Victor.””
I shook my head.
“Why?””
“Because I knew what would happen.””
“What would happen?””
Her voice cracked.
“Daniel would expose everything.””
I looked at Robert.
He said nothing.
Rachel continued.
“Your father found documents. He found transfers. He found evidence.””
“Evidence against Victor?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you stop him?””
Her face collapsed.
Because there it was.
The question she had been avoiding.
Why?
Why protect the person hurting your own brother?
Why stay silent?
Why let my father walk into danger?
Rachel whispered:
“Because Victor threatened me.””
The answer stunned me.
“What did he have on you?””
She looked at me.
And before she could respond, another voice came from behind us.
A familiar voice.
A voice I never expected to hear again.
“Don’t ask her.””
Everyone turned.
My mother stood at the end of the hallway.
But she wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t pretending anymore.
She looked terrified.
Because standing beside her was a man I had only seen in old photographs.
A man whose name had been written in my father’s final warning.
Victor Hale.
He smiled calmly.
Then he looked at me.
“Lena.””
My blood ran cold.
“I think it’s time you learned what your father was really hiding.””
And in his hand was a document.
May you like
One that had my father’s signature.
And my name on it.
