Chapter 7: The Person I Trusted Most

The page shook in my hands.

Not because I was afraid of what my father had written.

Because I already knew.

I knew before I finished reading.

I knew before my eyes reached the end of the sentence.

The person I trusted most.

The person who had been beside me.

The person who had held my hand when my mother humiliated me.

The person who had whispered that we would get through this together.

Ethan.

I looked at him.

And for a moment, I hated myself for even considering it.

Because Ethan was the man I planned to marry.

The man who knew how I took my coffee.

The man who stayed with me through nightmares after my father died.

The man who sat beside me when I couldn’t walk into my father’s office for two years because the memories hurt too much.

Could he really be the person my father warned me about?

“No,” I whispered.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked confused.

“Lena?””

I folded the paper.

Not because I wanted to hide it.

Because I needed one more second before my entire world changed.

Robert watched me carefully.

“You should read the full note.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know?””

His silence was immediate.

And painful.

“Did you know my father suspected Ethan?””

“No.””

“Then why did you look at him?””

Robert’s expression changed.

“I was not looking at Mr. Carter.””

“Then who?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

Everyone had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Lena, please.””

I looked at him.

His face hurt more than anything else in the room.

Because I wanted him to tell me it wasn’t true.

I wanted him to laugh.

To say this was impossible.

Instead, he looked afraid.

And fear was not the same as innocence.

“What aren’t you telling me?”” I asked.

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

My heart sank.

“Ethan.””

“I didn’t know about the note.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He looked away.

That tiny movement broke something inside me.

“You knew something.””

“I knew there were questions.””

“What questions?””

He rubbed his face.

“Your father contacted me before he died.””

The room went completely silent.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“I don’t know.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You were going to tell me when?””

He looked at me.

“After the wedding?””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Robert stepped between us.

“Mr. Carter, explain.””

Ethan looked at him.

“This is not what you think.””

“That depends on what you know.””

Ethan looked back at me.

“I met your father two weeks before the accident.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

“He asked me to meet him.””

“Why would my father meet you secretly?””

Ethan hesitated.

And that hesitation told me there was more.

“Because of me.””

The answer came from Victor.

Everyone turned.

He stood near the hallway entrance, watching.

“You see, Lena, Daniel was never worried about strangers.””

I glared at him.

“Stop.””

But Victor continued.

“He was worried about people who could get close.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to speak about Daniel.””

Victor smiled.

“I knew him longer than you did.””

“And you betrayed him.””

A flash of anger crossed Victor’s face.

But Ethan didn’t look away.

That surprised me.

Victor looked back at me.

“Ask your fiancé what Daniel wanted from him.””

I turned.

“Ethan?””

He swallowed.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

The entire hallway waited.

Ethan looked at Robert.

Then at me.

“Your father asked me to watch over you.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“He knew there were problems.””

“What problems?””

“Financial issues. People around him he didn’t trust.””

My eyes narrowed.

“So you were assigned to me?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I met you because I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

I stared at him.

“My father asked you to keep secrets from me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

More than a lie would have.

I looked at Robert.

“Is this true?””

Robert nodded slowly.

“Daniel did speak with Ethan.””

My chest tightened.

“About what?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“About protecting you.””

I turned back to Ethan.

“Protecting me from what?””

He looked at the floor.

“From people who wanted access to your trust.””

My mind raced.

My mother.

Victor.

Rachel.

The attempted transfer.

Everything.

“Did my father think you were involved?””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice broke slightly.

“He trusted me.””

I looked down at the page again.

*The person Lena trusts most.*

Maybe I had misunderstood.

Maybe my father wasn’t accusing Ethan.

Maybe he was warning me about someone else.

But then why hide Ethan’s involvement?

Why would my father make my fiancé keep secrets?

I turned to Robert.

“Show me the rest.””

He nodded.

The note had another paragraph beneath the accusation.

One I had not read.

I unfolded it.

*Lena, if Ethan is standing beside you when this letter is opened, then he has kept his promise.*

I stopped breathing.

I looked at Ethan.

His eyes filled with tears.

Robert continued quietly.

My hands trembled.

*That means he protected you without using my trust as a reason to gain yours.*

I looked at Ethan.

The pain in my chest changed.

Confusion replaced betrayal.

I continued.

*But there is one thing I need you to know. The person you trust most may not be the person you think. Trust is not measured by love alone. It is measured by what someone does when they believe nobody is watching.*

The room was silent.

My father hadn’t named Ethan.

He had warned me about trust itself.

But then why had he written it that way?

Why create such fear?

I looked at Robert.

“What does this mean?””

The trustee took the page.

“There is another piece.””

“Another?””

“Yes.””

He opened the folder again.

“This was attached separately.””

A small envelope fell onto the table.

My name was written on it.

Not typed.

Handwritten.

My father’s handwriting.

I touched it.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Robert answered softly.

“Something your father wanted you to open only after you discovered the truth about Ethan.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew this existed?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I believed him.

That was the terrifying part.

I still believed him.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

Not old.

Not faded.

Recent.

My father had taken it shortly before his death.

I stared at the image.

My blood went cold.

It showed Ethan.

Standing outside Victor Hale’s office.

Talking to him.

The date on the corner was six days before my father died.

I looked up.

Ethan’s face had gone pale.

“I can explain.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the question wasn’t whether Ethan had met Victor.

The question was why.

And whether my father knew.

Victor stepped closer.

“Now you understand.””

I turned toward him.

“Understand what?””

His smile was almost invisible.

“That everyone in this room has lied to you.””

My grip tightened around the photograph.

My mother.

Rachel.

Victor.

Ethan.

Everyone had hidden something.

But only one person knew the entire truth.

My father.

And he was gone.

I looked at Ethan.

“Tell me why you were with him.””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Finally, he whispered:

“Because your father asked me to meet him.””

I waited.

“And?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“And because Victor gave me information about your father’s death.””

The room stopped.

“What information?””

Ethan looked at me.

The answer came quietly.

“He told me your father’s accident was not an accident.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

And then Robert’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then his eyes lifted to me.

“Lena.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He held the phone tightly.

“The police just confirmed something.””

“What?””

Robert’s voice became barely a whisper.

“They reopened your father’s death investigation.””

I stared at him.

“Why now?””

Robert looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Because someone submitted new evidence.””

My fingers went numb.

“Who?””

Robert looked toward Victor.

Then toward Ethan.

Finally, he answered.

“The evidence came from a hidden account your father created.””

A pause.

“And the account was accessed tonight.””

I swallowed.

“By who?””

Robert looked at the screen again.

Then said the name.

The name that made every person in the hallway freeze.

“Lena.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“The account was accessed using your login.””
