Chapter 6: The Document With My Name On It
Victor Hale had aged.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The man in the photograph my father kept had dark hair, a confident smile, and the posture of someone who believed every room belonged to him.
The man standing in front of me now had silver at his temples.
But the eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
The kind of eyes that didn’t look at people.
They measured them.
He held the document loosely in one hand.
Almost casually.
Like he wasn’t holding something that had the power to destroy everything I thought I knew.
My mother stood beside him.
Rachel stood across from us.
And suddenly the hallway of my engagement party felt less like a celebration and more like a courtroom.
“What are you doing here?”” Robert asked.
Victor smiled.
“Interesting question.””
He looked around.
“A man walks into a family gathering, and suddenly everyone assumes the worst.””
Robert didn’t move.
“You were not invited.””
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“But I was expected.””
My stomach tightened.
“Expected by who?””
He raised the document.
“Your father.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the paper.
My father’s signature.
My name.
A part of me wanted to believe it was fake.
A trick.
A lie.
But another part of me remembered something important.
My father had spent his life preparing for problems.
He didn’t leave random documents behind.
“What is that?”” I asked.
Victor tilted his head.
“You really don’t know?””
“No.””
He smiled faintly.
“Daniel never told you.””
“Stop talking about my father like you knew him.””
A flash of irritation crossed his face.
Just for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“I knew him better than most people.””
“Apparently not well enough to stop him from leaving a file warning me about you.””
The smile vanished.
The hallway became silent.
Victor looked at Robert.
“So the file was opened.””
Robert’s expression hardened.
“You knew about the file?””
Victor ignored the question.
Instead, he looked at my mother.
“She couldn’t stop herself.””
My mother looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
They were connected.
Not just through tonight.
For much longer.
I turned to her.
“You knew he was coming?””
Her face tightened.
“Lena, you don’t understand.””
“I’m starting to.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You’re not.””
I laughed quietly.
“I think I understand more than you wanted me to.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Your mother was trying to protect you.””
I looked at him.
“By taking my father’s money?””
His expression remained calm.
“By preventing you from discovering something that would hurt you.””
Robert immediately interrupted.
“Do not manipulate her.””
Victor looked amused.
“Still protecting Daniel’s daughter.””
“Still exploiting Daniel’s family.””
The words hung in the air.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
For the first time, I saw anger.
Real anger.
Not the controlled version.
The kind underneath.
Then he handed the document to me.
“Read it.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“Something your father signed three weeks before his death.””
My heart stopped for a second.
Three weeks.
The final weeks.
The weeks nobody wanted to discuss.
“What kind of document?””
Victor looked directly at me.
“The kind that changes who owns what.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Lena, don’t accept anything from him.””
Victor laughed.
“Of course you’d say that.””
He looked at me.
“Because if she reads it, she might discover you weren’t the only person Daniel protected.””
I looked at Robert.
“What does he mean?””
Robert remained silent.
That scared me.
Because Robert always had an answer.
Except now.
He didn’t.
I took the document.
The paper was old.
Real.
My father’s signature was at the bottom.
I scanned the first page.
My eyes stopped.
*TRANSFER OF BENEFICIAL INTEREST AGREEMENT*
I frowned.
“What is this?””
Victor answered.
“An agreement showing your father intended to move ownership of certain assets before his death.””
“To who?””
I kept reading.
The answer was unclear.
Parts had been redacted.
“Why are sections covered?””
Victor looked at Robert.
“Ask him.””
I turned.
“Robert?””
The trustee exhaled.
“There are legal restrictions.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at the document.
“Your father created multiple protections around his assets.””
“But this one?””
Robert hesitated.
“This one was never activated.””
Victor smiled.
“Because Daniel died before he could complete it.””
I looked back at him.
“And what does that mean?””
Victor stepped closer.
“It means your father changed his mind about leaving everything to you.””
The words hit hard.
I hated that they did.
Even after everything, a small part of me still cared what my father thought of me.
“What are you saying?””
Victor lowered his voice.
“I’m saying Daniel knew you weren’t ready.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Victor looked at him.
“You’re Ethan, right?””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“You know my name?””
Victor smiled.
“I know everything about Lena.””
That sentence made my skin crawl.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
And then my mother spoke.
“Because Daniel asked him to watch over us.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
My mother looked exhausted.
“Your father knew things were falling apart.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he wanted to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice rose.
“Protect me from what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel whispered:
“From the truth.””
I looked at her.
“You knew too.””
She nodded.
Slowly.
“I knew some of it.””
“What does that mean?””
She wiped her eyes.
“It means your father discovered Victor had been moving money.””
Victor immediately reacted.
“That’s a lie.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Your denial is irrelevant.””
Victor looked at him.
“You have no proof.””
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
“Actually, we do.””
He opened the blue file.
“Which is why you came here.””
Victor’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You think you understand what Daniel did.””
Robert removed a document.
“You attempted to access the trust using Daniel’s deceased service number.””
Victor went still.
My mother looked at him.
For the first time, I saw uncertainty on her face.
Victor recovered quickly.
“That wasn’t me.””
Robert looked at him.
“Then who was it?””
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Because that was the question.
The question underneath everything.
If Victor wasn’t the one using my father’s identity…
Who was?
Victor looked at Rachel.
And something passed between them.
A silent conversation.
Fear.
Recognition.
Then Victor said something that made my blood freeze.
“You’re looking in the wrong direction.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at my mother.
Then at Rachel.
Then finally at me.
“Your father didn’t create those protections because he was afraid someone would steal your money.””
A pause.
“He created them because he was afraid someone would use you to find what he hid.””
The hallway went completely silent.
“What did he hide?”” I asked.
Victor didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the document in my hand.
“There’s another page.””
I flipped it over.
Nothing.
Victor smiled.
“Not there.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Then where?””
He pointed toward the blue file.
“Your father left it with Robert.””
Robert’s face changed.
I looked at him.
“What page?””
The trustee slowly opened the final section.
A single sheet remained inside.
A page I hadn’t seen.
A page hidden beneath the others.
Robert pulled it out.
His eyes moved across the text.
Then he looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him…
He looked afraid.
“What?”” I whispered.
Robert handed me the page.
At the top was a sentence written by my father.
A sentence that made my hands shake.
*If Victor Hale appears after my death, do not trust anything he says.*
I looked up.
Victor was watching me.
Then I read the next line.
And my heart stopped.
*Because Victor is not the person who betrayed me.*
Below it was another sentence.
One name.
One person.
The person my father believed was responsible.
The person who had been close to him until the end.
I read the name.
And the world seemed to tilt.
Because my father’s final accusation was not against Victor.
Not against my mother.
Not against Rachel.
It was against someone I had never suspected.
Someone who had just been standing beside me.
My fingers went numb.
Ethan looked at my face.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t answer.
May you like
Because written in my father’s handwriting were the words:
*The person who betrayed me is the person Lena trusts most.*
