Chapter 8: The Account I Never Opened
For a few seconds, nobody reacted.
Not because we didn’t understand.
Because we did.
The words were too clear.
*The account was accessed using your login.*
My login.
My identity.
My name attached to something I had never touched.
I looked at Robert.
“That’s impossible.””
He didn’t argue.
That scared me more than if he had.
“I know.””
“Then why are you looking at me like that?””
“Because someone wanted it to appear that you did.””
My hands tightened around the photograph of Ethan and Victor.
The night had already taken everything I thought I knew.
My mother.
My aunt.
My fiancé.
My father’s death.
And now this.
Someone had used my name to reopen the darkest chapter of my life.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Robert, what exactly was accessed?””
The trustee looked at him carefully.
“A protected account.””
“What kind of account?””
“One Daniel created outside the family trust structure.””
I frowned.
“Why would Dad create something separate?””
Robert glanced at me.
“Because he believed the trust itself might be compromised.””
The room went silent.
My father had expected this.
Not this exact night.
Not this exact moment.
But the possibility.
“Where is this account?”” I asked.
Robert hesitated.
“Offshore.””
My stomach tightened.
“And what was inside?””
“Evidence.””
The word landed heavily.
Not money.
Not assets.
Evidence.
My father hadn’t hidden wealth.
He had hidden the truth.
Victor crossed his arms.
“Now you see why Daniel was careful.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew about the account.””
Victor smiled slightly.
“I knew Daniel had a backup plan.””
“You knew enough to come here tonight.””
“I came because I knew someone would eventually open it.””
“Someone?””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
For the first time, Victor didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Because he wasn’t afraid of me.
He was afraid of the person behind everything.
Robert moved toward the library table.
“We need to verify the access records.””
He opened his laptop.
I watched the screen.
Numbers.
Dates.
Security information.
Things that looked impossible to understand.
Then he turned the screen toward me.
A login attempt.
Time.
Location.
User ID.
My name.
I stared at it.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
The timestamp was twenty minutes earlier.
While I was standing in the ballroom.
While my mother was slapping me.
While everyone was watching.
I couldn’t have done it.
But someone had.
“How?”” I whispered.
Robert zoomed in.
“The account required your personal credentials.””
“I never had access.””
“Yes, you did.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“Your father created the account using information connected to you.””
“What information?””
“Your birth records. Your legal identification. Your verification questions.””
I shook my head.
“Then someone would need all of that.””
Robert nodded.
“Correct.””
Ethan looked at Victor.
“So someone close.””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
The list of possibilities was becoming smaller.
My mother knew my entire life.
Rachel knew family history.
Ethan knew things my father told him.
Victor had information from my father’s business.
And somehow, someone had enough access to become me.
I looked at Chloe.
She had been silent.
Too silent.
“Chloe.””
Her face lifted.
“Yes?””
“Did my mother ever ask you for my personal information?””
Her expression changed.
A pause.
A tiny one.
But I saw it.
“Chloe.””
She looked away.
And my heart sank.
“What did she ask for?””
Chloe swallowed.
“Your birthday.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
“What else?””
She whispered:
“Your old passwords.””
The room went still.
Ethan looked shocked.
“Why would she ask that?””
Chloe started crying.
“She said she was helping with family documents.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Last year.””
“Last year?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””
I turned away.
Everything mattered now.
Every strange question.
Every forgotten conversation.
Every moment someone had asked for something small.
My mother hadn’t needed my money.
She needed my identity.
Robert closed the laptop.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Where?””
“The account location.””
“You can access it?””
“Not anymore.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who opened it triggered a security lock.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the evidence inside is protected.””
“Protected from who?””
Robert looked at me.
“Everyone.””
A strange silence followed.
Then Victor laughed softly.
Nobody expected it.
Especially me.
“What’s funny?””
He looked at me.
“Your father.””
I frowned.
“What about him?””
“He always did this.””
“Did what?””
“Made everyone think they were chasing the prize.””
Victor stepped closer.
“But the prize was never the money.””
I felt anger rise.
“Then what was it?””
He looked at the blue file.
“The person who could prove what happened.””
My father.
The accident.
The betrayal.
The hidden account.
Everything pointed back to that.
“Did you kill him?”” I asked.
The question surprised everyone.
Even me.
Victor’s face changed.
Not anger.
Something else.
Pain.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
And somehow, I believed him.
That scared me too.
“Then who did?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan quietly said:
“Lena.””
I turned.
He looked at Robert.
“We need to tell her the rest.””
Robert’s expression hardened.
“Are you certain?””
“Yes.””
“What rest?””
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan took a breath.
“The night before your father died, he called me.””
I stared at him.
“You said you met him.””
“I did.””
“What happened after?””
Ethan looked down.
“He called me again.””
“When?””
“The night of the accident.””
My heart stopped.
“You talked to him that night?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he made me promise.””
I shook my head.
“No more secrets.””
Ethan nodded.
“You’re right.””
He looked at me.
“I should have told you.””
“What did he say?””
Ethan’s eyes filled with guilt.
“He said he knew who was behind everything.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
“He didn’t tell me.””
“Why?””
“Because he said if I knew the name, I would become a target too.””
My voice became quieter.
“Then what did he tell you?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“He told me to protect you.””
“From who?””
A long pause.
Then:
“From the person who would come looking for the account.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone had been looking for the account.
My mother.
Victor.
Someone else.
But there was one question I couldn’t ignore.
“Why tonight?””
Nobody answered.
Why my engagement party?
Why now?
Why wait five years?
Then Robert’s phone rang again.
He answered.
“Yes?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“The security lock was bypassed.””
My heart sank.
“By who?””
Robert didn’t speak.
He turned the screen around.
A new access record appeared.
The account had been opened again.
But this time, it wasn’t using my login.
It was using someone else’s.
A name.
A name that made Ethan step back.
A name that made Victor go silent.
A name that my father had written in the file years ago.
*Daniel Hayes.*
I stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Nobody answered.
Until Victor whispered:
“Because your father didn’t leave the account for the living.””
The lights in the hallway flickered.
And my phone suddenly vibrated.
One new message.
No number.
No contact name.
Just a sentence.
My blood turned cold when I read it.
*Lena, if you are seeing this, it means they found the account. Don’t trust anyone in the room.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
May you like
And then another message appeared.
*Especially the person who knows your father’s final secret.*
