Chapter 12: What Was Hidden Beneath Christmas

I stared at the Christmas tree.

Thousands of tiny lights blinked across the branches.

Ornaments hung from every side.

Memories.

Family traditions.

Years of Christmas mornings.

And apparently, a secret.

My mother walked toward it slowly.

Vanessa followed with her eyes.

“You knew?””

Vanessa asked.

My mother didn’t turn around.

“I suspected.””

“How?””

“Your grandfather told me.””

My mother touched one of the ornaments.

“He said one day someone would come looking.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“People who wanted what he protected.””

I looked around the room.

The house suddenly felt different.

Every wall.

Every piece of furniture.

Like it was hiding something.

“What exactly did he protect?””

My mother took a deep breath.

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Fraud.””

The word landed hard.

Daniel.

The fake documents.

The signatures.

The property deals.

It all connected.

My grandfather had seen something coming decades ago.

And somehow, it had found us.

I moved toward the tree.

“Where?””

My mother pointed.

“Your grandfather always loved that ornament.””

She touched a small wooden star near the bottom branches.

“He said it reminded him that even small things could hold important secrets.””

I reached down.

The ornament looked ordinary.

Old.

Handmade.

I turned it over.

There was a tiny latch.

My breath caught.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus…”

I opened it.

Inside was a small key.

Not a letter.

Not a document.

A key.

I looked at my mother.

“What does this open?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I picked it up.

It was old but carefully preserved.

On the metal was an engraving.

A single word.

“Family.””

I didn’t know why.

But that word scared me.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rachel.””

I didn’t recognize it.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I was your grandfather’s attorney.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“What?””

The woman continued.

“I’ve been trying to reach your family for years.””

My grip tightened.

“Why?””

“Because the trust was never transferred.””

I frowned.

“What trust?””

“The one your grandfather created.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked shocked.

Rachel continued.

“And because someone has been trying to access it illegally.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Who?””

The woman hesitated.

Then said:

“Your wife.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.””

I stepped away.

“That’s not possible.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“Marcus, I know this is difficult.””

“Why would you say that?””

“Because I have records.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What records?””

“The applications.””

My stomach tightened.

“Applications for what?””

A pause.

Then:

“Guardianship.””

The room went silent.

My mother whispered:

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

But she didn’t deny it.

And that hurt more than any lie.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t file them.””

“Then who did?””

She looked at the phone.

At the key.

At the documents scattered across the room.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

Rachel spoke again.

“Marcus, there’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

“The guardianship request was not the most dangerous document.””

“What was?””

Her voice became serious.

“The document transferring control of your mother’s assets.””

My heart stopped.

“Who signed it?””

Silence.

Then Rachel said:

“Your name is on it.””

I looked down at my hands.

My name.

My signature.

My life.

Another lie built around me.

And this time, it wasn’t just about my mother’s house.

It was about everything my family had left.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

“Marcus…”

I didn’t answer.

May you like

Because for the first time that night, I wondered if she was the person who betrayed me…

Or the person who was also trapped.
