Chapter 4: The Name Behind The Message

The phone buzzed in my hand.

Vanessa stopped moving.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the soft crackling of the fireplace and the Christmas music playing from the speakers.

A song about family.

A song about love.

A cruel joke considering what was happening in front of me.

I looked down at the screen.

The new message preview was only a few words.

But those words were enough to make Vanessa lose all color in her face.

“DON’T TRUST HER. SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH.””

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My eyes moved from the phone to Vanessa.

“Who is this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her jaw tightened.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

I had heard that sentence a thousand times in movies.

I never thought I would hear it in my own house.

“Then tell me what it is.””

She looked at my mother.

Then back at me.

“Not here.””

I stared at her.

“You mean not in front of your victim?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Victim?””

My mother lowered her eyes.

I saw the pain on her face.

That was enough.

I didn’t need another explanation.

I walked toward the couch and placed the phone on the table where both women could see it.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I’m not going to stand here while you accuse me based on a few messages.””

“Funny.””

I looked at the screen.

“You were fine with accusations when they were against my mother.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A flash of anger.

Then control.

“I was trying to help her.””

My mother whispered:

“No.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“You need to stop lying.””

I stepped between them.

“Watch your voice.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa stared at me.

“You’re protecting her.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

And I knew she heard the difference.

Before tonight, I would have searched for peace.

I would have tried to understand both sides.

But seeing my mother sitting there with food stains on her clothes changed something inside me.

“Marcus,” Vanessa said quietly, “after everything we’ve been through?””

I looked at her.

“That’s exactly why I’m asking.””

She looked confused.

“What?””

“Because I know you.””

Her expression softened.

She thought I was coming back to her.

Then I continued.

“And I know when you’re hiding something.””

The softness disappeared.

My mother looked at the phone again.

“Son…”

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then she pointed at the screen.

“The number.””

I looked down.

The message came from a contact.

Not a stranger.

A saved name.

I tapped the conversation.

The name appeared at the top.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew it.

“Daniel.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Who is Daniel?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the first honest thing she had done all night.

My mother looked frightened.

“Marcus, please.””

I turned toward her.

“Mom, you know him?””

She slowly nodded.

“I’ve seen him.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Great.””

I looked between them.

“Someone want to explain why my wife is texting someone my mother knows?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is getting out of control.””

“No.””

I picked up the phone.

“This was already out of control.””

I scrolled upward.

More messages.

More conversations.

My hands tightened.

There were discussions about paperwork.

Appointments.

Dates.

The house.

My mother’s name appeared repeatedly.

But then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A message from Vanessa.

Three weeks earlier.

“I need him gone longer.””

I looked at the date.

It was sent while I was overseas.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does this mean?””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She looked away.

That was when my mother spoke.

“She wanted you to stay away.””

I turned.

“Mom?””

My mother wiped her face.

“She told me you were considering another assignment.””

My eyes narrowed.

“I never said that.””

Exactly.

She had lied.

Vanessa had used information about my career to manipulate my mother.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the house.

Not because of the messages.

Because she had used my absence.

My duty.

The thing I sacrificed years for.

She used it against my family.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you want me gone?””

Her silence answered.

The woman I married looked down.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Then she whispered:

“I was trying to protect our future.””

I stared at her.

“By hurting my mother?””

“No.””

“By taking her house?””

“No.””

“By making her sign papers while I was away?””

Her face changed.

She had no answer.

The room felt smaller.

The Christmas tree lights continued blinking.

Red.

Green.

Gold.

Like nothing had happened.

Then my phone rang.

Not Vanessa’s.

Mine.

The name on the screen made my stomach drop.

Because it was the last person I expected to hear from tonight.

My lawyer.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A pause.

Then a serious voice.

“Marcus, I’m sorry to call you on Christmas.””

I walked away from the others.

“What happened?””

The voice lowered.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did your mother recently sign any property documents?””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

Terrified.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“No.””

Another pause.

“Good.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

The answer came quietly.

“Because someone just sent me a copy of a transfer agreement with your mother’s signature.””

I stopped breathing.

The room disappeared.

The tree.

The presents.

The music.

Everything.

May you like

Because my mother had said she never signed anything.

And my lawyer had just told me someone had proof that she did.
