Chapter 12 - THE GIRL WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO INHERIT

The bank froze the transaction.

But only temporarily.

The transfer had already passed through three accounts.

The investigator explained that the money was being routed through offshore entities.

I stood inside the command room at the ranch, staring at the financial screens.

“Can you stop it?”

The banker shook his head.

“We can attempt recovery.”

“Attempt?”

“Mr. Carter, whoever initiated this knew exactly what they were doing.”

I looked at Pearl.

She was sitting beside my mother.

She looked exhausted.

“She didn't authorize anything.”

“We know.”

“Then how did they use her name?”

The banker looked at the documents.

“Her trust has biometric authorization.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone obtained her original identity records.”

My blood went cold.

“From where?”

He hesitated.

“Hospital.”

I remembered Pearl's birth.

The hospital where she was born.

The hospital records.

The photographs.

Everything.

Someone had been planning this since before she was born.

I looked at my mother.

“Who had access?”

She didn't answer.

Eleanor did.

“Your father's attorney.”

I turned.

“Which attorney?”

“Samuel Reed.”

The name meant nothing.

Then my mother whispered:

“Jonathan's brother.”

Everything connected again.

Jonathan hadn't built the operation alone.

His brother had created the legal structure.

Gabriel had manipulated the family.

Victor had acquired the land.

Carmen had pressured Della.

And someone inside the hospital had altered Pearl's identity records.

But there was still one question.

Why Pearl?

The banker opened another file.

“There's something you need to see.”

He turned the screen toward me.

A genetic analysis appeared.

Pearl carried a rare hereditary marker.

Not just the Carter marker.

Something else.

The banker pointed.

“This marker is connected to a private genetic trust.”

“What is that?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She seemed frightened.

“Do you recognize it?”

She nodded.

“Your father's mother had it.”

“So did my father?”

“Yes.”

“And Pearl?”

“Yes.”

The banker explained:

“Someone established a genetic inheritance program decades ago.”

“What does that mean?”

“The trust isn't only financial.”

He opened another document.

It listed patents.

Medical research.

Energy technology.

Mining rights.

Biotechnology.

I stared.

The Carter reserve was not simply land.

It was the intellectual property of inventions my family had quietly funded for generations.

The value was enormous.

Hundreds of millions.

Possibly billions.

But the most important part was a clause.

Control remains with the first descendant carrying the original marker.

Pearl.

My daughter.

That was why everyone wanted her.

Not because she was a child.

Because she was the legal and biological key to the entire system.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Wade.”

My father's voice.

“Dad.”

“You need to listen carefully.”

“Where are you?”

“There's no time.”

“What happened?”

“Gabriel wasn't the final threat.”

I closed my eyes.

“Who is?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your mother.”

I looked at her.

She was sitting across the room.

I couldn't speak.

My father continued.

“Hazel was forced to cooperate.”

My mother stood.

“No.”

“Your mother didn't choose this.”

“Then who forced her?”

“Your grandfather.”

“He's dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

My father hesitated.

“Because your grandfather left instructions.”

My mother started crying.

“He threatened my children.”

My father continued:

“Hazel was given a choice.”

“Me or Wade.”

I stared.

“What?”

“She agreed to help them because she believed it would keep you alive.”

My mother covered her face.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I looked at her.

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because they were watching.”

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

She looked at Pearl.

“They wanted the child.”

I felt tears in my eyes.

“You could have trusted me.”

“I was afraid.”

I walked toward her.

For years, I had blamed her for secrets.

Now I understood that fear had controlled everyone.

Then the banker's computer beeped.

The transfer had resumed.

“It's moving again.”

I turned.

“Stop it.”

“We're trying.”

“What triggered it?”

The banker looked confused.

“Your daughter.”

Pearl looked up.

“I didn't do anything.”

I knelt beside her.

“I know.”

The banker checked the system.

“There's a remote authorization.”

“From where?”

He entered the location.

My blood ran cold.

“Hazel Ranch.”

I looked around.

Everyone was inside the room.

Except—

Eleanor.

I turned.

She was gone.

“Where is Eleanor?”

Nobody knew.

We searched the house.

Then we found her coat.

And beneath it, a note.

My father's handwriting.

Do not follow Eleanor.

I stared.

“What does this mean?”

My mother shook her head.

“It means she knows.”

“Knows what?”

“She knows where Richard is.”

I felt cold.

The banker suddenly shouted:

“Someone accessed the reserve!”

The screen displayed:

AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY: PEARL CARTER

Then:

SECONDARY GUARDIAN: ELEANOR HALE

I stared.

Eleanor had been listed as Pearl's guardian.

Not me.

Not my mother.

Eleanor.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared.

She had been protecting the trust for decades.

Then a new message appeared.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

I felt sick.

“How much?”

The banker stared.

“Everything.”

“Everything?”

“The reserve.”

“All of it.”

I looked at Pearl.

Her inheritance was gone.

Then another message appeared.

TRANSFER DESTINATION: CARTER LAKE.

I froze.

“The lake.”

The banker nodded.

“It's not a bank account.”

“What?”

“The money was converted.”

“Into what?”

He opened the final record.

I stared.

“Land.”

Every property surrounding Carter Lake had been purchased.

In Pearl's name.

She now owned the entire lake.

But there was one problem.

The properties had been purchased from one seller.

Gabriel Carter.

My uncle had sold the land to my daughter.

Using money he had somehow obtained from the reserve.

He hadn't stolen the fortune.

He had transformed it.

I didn't understand.

Then my father's voice returned.

“Now you know why I couldn't come home.”

“Dad?”

“Because the reserve was never meant to stay hidden forever.”

“What happens now?”

“You have to decide.”

“Decide what?”

“Whether you will continue the Carter legacy…”

He paused.

“…or end it.”

The radio went silent.

I looked at Pearl.

She was holding the black key.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered whether protecting her meant keeping the inheritance.

Or destroying it.
