Chapter 8 - THE MAN BEHIND THE TRUST

Jonathan walked slowly into the vault.
He didn't carry a weapon.
He didn't need one.
His confidence was more frightening than a weapon.
Thomas stood behind him.
Della moved closer to me.
Jonathan smiled.
“You've inherited your father's stubbornness.”
I didn't answer.
“What do you want?”
“The trust.”
“Why?”
“Because your family doesn't understand what it owns.”
He walked toward the map.
“This valley contains resources worth billions.”
I stared at him.
“And you stole them.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I managed them.”
“For twenty years.”
“Exactly.”
My mother stepped forward.
“You forged documents.”
Jonathan looked at her.
“Your husband forged documents.”
She shook her head.
“You murdered people.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“People died because they made poor choices.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“You sound exactly like Thomas.”
Jonathan glanced at her.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
Eleanor laughed.
“I've been hiding for thirty-seven years.”
“Then perhaps you should have stayed there.”
I stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Jonathan looked at me.
“You're angry.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He pointed at Pearl.
“Anger makes people careless.”
I tightened my jaw.
“Leave my daughter out of this.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because she is the legal owner.”
Pearl looked confused.
Jonathan crouched slightly.
“Your family has something very valuable.”
Pearl moved behind me.
I blocked him.
“Don't come near her.”
Jonathan stood.
“Fine.”
He turned toward Thomas.
“Bring me the second key.”
Thomas handed it over.
Jonathan looked at it.
Then at me.
“The first key.”
I said nothing.
He smiled.
“Your father built a beautiful system.”
He walked toward the control panel.
“Two keys.”
“One beneficiary.”
“One guardian.”
“And one final authorization.”
“What authorization?”
“Yours.”
My stomach tightened.
“If you sign, the reserve transfers.”
“To you?”
“Yes.”
“And if I refuse?”
Jonathan smiled.
“Then people you love will continue to disappear.”
My mother went pale.
“You killed Michael.”
Jonathan's expression changed.
“No.”
“Then who?”
He looked at her.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
Jonathan continued.
“Edward ordered Michael's disappearance.”
“But Michael survived.”
“Barely.”
I looked at my father.
He wasn't there.
But suddenly I understood.
My father had been fighting Edward.
Jonathan had helped him.
Then betrayed him.
“Why did Dad trust you?”
“Because I saved him once.”
“And then?”
“I realized how much the reserve was worth.”
I stepped forward.
“You betrayed him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because money gives you options.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Jonathan smiled.
“You'll learn.”
Then the lights flickered.
The vault doors locked.
Jonathan looked around.
“What?”
The monitor turned on.
My father's face appeared again.
Jonathan stared.
“Richard.”
The recording began.
“If Jonathan is standing in the vault, then everything has gone according to plan.”
Jonathan stepped backward.
“No.”
My father continued.
“You've spent twenty years believing you controlled the trust.”
“You didn't.”
Jonathan's face hardened.
“The reserve was never accessible through the bank.”
The map changed.
A hidden location appeared.
The old barn.
Then the west wing.
Then the oak.
Then another location.
A small lake outside the county.
Jonathan stared.
“The real reserve is beneath Carter Lake.”
I froze.
“Carter Lake?”
My father continued:
“Only the beneficiary can access it.”
Jonathan turned toward Pearl.
She was terrified.
“How?”
My father answered:
“Blood.”
A small panel opened beneath the monitor.
Inside was a biometric scanner.
Jonathan rushed toward it.
He tried his hand.
Nothing.
Thomas tried.
Nothing.
I tried.
Nothing.
Then Pearl stepped forward.
I grabbed her arm.
“No.”
My father had designed it for her.
The scanner recognized her.
A green light appeared.
The floor opened.
Jonathan stared.
“What is this?”
A hidden compartment rose from beneath the floor.
Inside was a small metal box.
Pearl looked at me.
“Dad?”
I nodded.
She reached toward it.
Jonathan suddenly lunged.
I blocked him.
We stumbled against the desk.
Thomas grabbed my shoulder.
Della pulled him away.
My mother shouted:
“Get away from him!”
The vault erupted into chaos.
Then the lights went red.
A siren sounded.
My father's voice returned.
“If unauthorized persons attempt to access the reserve, all evidence will automatically transmit to law enforcement.”
Jonathan froze.
His face changed.
“No.”
The screens filled with files.
Bank transfers.
Payments.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Everything.
Jonathan stared at the evidence.
“You built a dead-man switch.”
My father answered:
“Yes.”
Jonathan looked at me.
“You're destroying everything.”
I shook my head.
“You destroyed it.”
Police sirens sounded above the ranch.
Jonathan looked toward the ceiling.
Thomas backed away.
Della began crying.
Then the vault door opened.
Federal agents entered.
“Jonathan Reed!”
He raised his hands.
Thomas followed.
For the first time, neither man smiled.
But as Jonathan was handcuffed, he looked at me.
“You think you've won?”
I didn't answer.
He leaned closer.
“There is one file your father never opened.”
“What file?”
Jonathan smiled.
“The one labeled Pearl Carter — Origin.”
My heart stopped.
Pearl's face went pale.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan was dragged away.
The vault door closed.
I looked at the monitor.
A new file appeared.
PEARL CARTER — ORIGIN
I clicked it.
A birth certificate appeared.
Then another document.
Then a photograph.
I stared.
The date of Pearl's birth was correct.
Her mother's name was correct.
May you like
But the father's name…
wasn't mine.
