Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY STOPPED USING THE WORD “REAL”

At Christmas two years after graduation, Caroline arrived with dessert.

Not cake.

Pie.

Daniel looked.

“No labels?”

She rolled eyes.

“Learned lesson.”

We laughed.

Not fully comfortable.

But possible.

Then one aunt asked:

“So who is Mom now?”

Awful.

Daniel answered:

“I have Rachel and Caroline.”

Then:

“One raised me. One gave birth to me. Both are real people. Stop making bracket.”

That ended.

Then he changed language.

He called me Mom.

Called Caroline Caroline.

Sometimes introduced:

“This is my mom Rachel. This is my biological mom Caroline.”

Caroline accepted.

At first painful.

Later normal.

Then at twenty-five, he got married.

No drama.

Both invited.

Seating?

I sat front row.

Caroline beside Henry? Maybe.

Daniel decided.

At rehearsal, Caroline asked me:

“Do you want me farther back?”

I said:

“Ask Daniel.”

New rule.

No negotiating child’s relationships behind his back.

He wanted both first row, opposite sides aisle.

Fine.

During ceremony, officiant said:

“Those who raised and loved Daniel…”

Both stood with others.

No “real.”

Then Caroline cried.

I did too.

No competition.

Then reception cake had no labels.

Good.

Daniel joked:

May you like

“I personally approved frosting.”

Healing.
