Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed
The words on the paper stayed in my mind long after I stopped reading them.
*You don’t know what happened the night she was born.*
Not the adoption.
Not Daniel.
Not even the fact that Lauren was Emma’s biological mother.
Those words were different.
They were a warning.
A reminder that even after learning the biggest secret of my life, there was still something hidden underneath.
I looked at Lauren.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
“What does he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
“Lauren.””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
My father took the note from my hand and read it again.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That terrified me.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me.””
He slowly placed the paper on the table.
“Claire, there are things about that night that you don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“Obviously.””
My voice was sharper than I intended.
“Apparently, everyone knows things except me.””
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
James stood beside me, holding Emma’s diaper bag.
“Then we talk now.””
My father looked toward the front window.
Daniel was gone.
But the fear he brought with him remained.
“We shouldn’t stay here.””
My mother nodded quickly.
“For once, Richard, I agree.””
I looked at her.
“For once?””
She looked away.
The words hurt.
Because they reminded me that this family had been hiding things from me for years.
Dad grabbed his keys.
“We’re going to my study.””
I almost laughed.
“My entire life is falling apart, and we’re going to the study?””
He looked at me sadly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because that’s where the rest of the truth is.””
The sentence made my stomach twist.
The rest of the truth.
How much more could there be?
My father’s study had always been my favorite room in the house.
When I was little, I used to sit on the carpet while he worked and draw pictures beside his desk.
The walls were covered with family photographs.
Birthdays.
Graduations.
Vacations.
Memories.
Now every picture felt different.
Like every happy moment had a shadow behind it.
Dad closed the door.
Lauren stayed standing near the bookshelf.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
I sat on the couch with Emma in my arms.
James sat beside me.
“Start from the beginning.””
My father nodded.
“The night Emma was born wasn’t simple.””
I looked at Lauren.
She lowered her eyes.
“What happened?””
Dad took a deep breath.
“Lauren went into labor unexpectedly.””
James frowned.
“But she told everyone she wasn’t pregnant.””
“She was scared.””
Lauren whispered.
I looked at her.
“Scared enough to hide an entire pregnancy?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I waited.
She continued.
“I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Emma.
“Of everything.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was twenty-two. I had no stable job. No money. And Daniel had convinced me I couldn’t be a mother.””
I shook my head.
“You believed him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
Lauren didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t make excuses.
She just looked broken.
“I believed him because part of me already believed those things about myself.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father continued.
“The night she gave birth, Daniel was at the hospital.””
My head lifted.
“What?””
Lauren closed her eyes.
“He came after I called him.””
“Why would you call him?””
“Because I thought he would change when he saw her.””
A painful smile appeared on her face.
“I thought holding his daughter would make him love her.””
My chest tightened.
“And did it?””
Lauren laughed softly.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“He looked at her.””
She swallowed.
“And then he looked at me and said, ‘You still expect me to fix your mistakes?’”
My hands tightened around Emma.
I hated this man.
I hated that my daughter’s beginning was surrounded by people who didn’t protect her.
“What happened next?””
My father answered.
“Daniel left.””
I frowned.
“Then why are we afraid of him?””
“Because he came back.””
Lauren nodded.
“He came back the next morning.””
The room went quiet.
“He found me before the adoption agency arrived.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Lauren looked at me.
“He told me he had changed his mind.””
I frowned.
“You said he didn’t want her.””
“He didn’t.””
“Then why?””
Her face became pale.
“Because he found out someone else wanted her.””
I looked at my father.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father walked to the bookshelf.
He pulled out an old folder.
My breathing slowed.
Another folder.
Another secret.
He placed it on the desk.
“I never wanted you to see this.””
“Clearly.””
He opened it.
Inside were documents.
Hospital records.
Adoption papers.
And a letter.
My father picked up the letter.
“This was written six months ago.””
He handed it to me.
I looked at the handwriting.
Not Daniel’s.
Lauren’s.
My sister had written it.
I looked at her.
“You wrote this?””
She nodded.
“I wrote it before the adoption was finalized.””
“Why?””
She looked at Emma.
“Because I wanted her to know someday.””
My fingers shook as I unfolded it.
The first line destroyed me.
*To my daughter, if you ever read this, I need you to know I didn’t leave because I didn’t love you.*
I stopped reading.
I couldn’t.
Not yet.
Because suddenly, Lauren wasn’t just the person who had hidden the truth.
She was also a woman who had been carrying a goodbye letter for six months.
James touched my shoulder.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know what to think.””
And that was the hardest part.
I didn’t know who was the victim.
I didn’t know who had hurt who.
I only knew Emma was caught in the middle.
I folded the letter.
“Why did Daniel come back?””
Lauren looked at my father.
Dad answered.
“Because he discovered something about the adoption.””
“What?””
“He discovered the adoption agency had completed the process without his consent.””
I froze.
“But if he’s the father—”
“He had legal rights.””
James immediately understood.
“So he could challenge it.””
Dad nodded.
“He threatened to.””
I looked at Emma.
“And you?””
Dad looked ashamed.
“I helped Lauren hide.””
My anger returned.
“You helped her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel wasn’t trying to be a father.””
Dad’s voice became harder.
“He wanted control.””
Lauren nodded.
“He told me if he couldn’t have me, he would still have something that belonged to me.””
A chill moved through the room.
Emma suddenly started crying.
The sound broke through everything.
I immediately stood up and rocked her.
“It’s okay.””
My voice softened.
“I’m here.””
Lauren watched me.
Her expression broke.
“I always wondered what she would be like.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“The first time I saw you holding her.””
She wiped her tears.
“I wondered if she liked music. If she slept well. If she smiled when she woke up.””
She smiled sadly.
“I wondered if she had my eyes.””
I looked down at Emma.
Then I looked at Lauren.
That was the cruelest part.
She did.
The same dark eyes.
The same small dimple when she smiled.
I hated that I noticed.
A knock suddenly came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
The study door was closed.
The sound came again.
Three slow knocks.
My father’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
James stood.
“Why?””
Dad stared at the ceiling.
“Because nobody is upstairs.””
A cold silence filled the room.
My heart started racing.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, there was no message.
Only a photo.
I opened it.
And the room disappeared.
Because the picture showed the inside of my parents’ house.
The hallway.
The staircase.
And someone standing at the top.
Watching us.
Lauren covered her mouth.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“Who is that?””
Her eyes filled with terror.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“That’s not Daniel.””
