Chapter 6: The Secret Beyond Daniel
The sentence came out as a whisper.
“That’s not Daniel.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at Lauren, waiting for her to explain.
But she looked as terrified as I felt.
“Then who is it?””
My voice sounded distant.
Lauren’s eyes stayed locked on the photograph in my hand.
The picture showed the upstairs hallway of my parents’ house.
The old wooden floor.
The family portraits hanging along the wall.
And a person standing at the top of the stairs.
A person who had been inside the house.
Watching us.
Waiting.
“Lauren,” James said firmly, “who is that?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
My father looked at her.
“You do know.””
“No.””
“You recognize him.””
Lauren’s face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Dad…”
My father stepped closer.
“You need to tell her.””
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me what?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at my mother.
She was crying silently.
That hurt almost more than the secrets.
Because my mother had always been the person I ran to.
When I got my first heartbreak.
When I failed my driving test.
When I found out I was pregnant.
She had held my hand through everything.
Except this.
This time, she had held the truth away from me.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
“Please.””
Her lips trembled.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t want another apology.””
My voice cracked.
“I want the truth.””
My father closed his eyes.
Then he walked toward the door.
“Everyone stays together.””
James followed.
“Where are you going?””
“To check the house.””
“No.””
James blocked him.
“You’re not walking around alone.””
For a moment, my father looked like he wanted to argue.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.””
They stepped into the hallway.
I held Emma tighter.
Lauren remained beside me.
For the first time that night, we were standing on the same side.
Both afraid.
Both watching the door.
“Who is he?”” I asked quietly.
Lauren didn’t answer.
“Lauren.””
She swallowed.
“I’ve seen him before.””
My heart dropped.
“When?””
“Before Emma was born.””
I stared at her.
“Another secret?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
I laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“Of course.””
Lauren flinched.
“I deserve that.””
I looked away.
“Who is he?””
She took a deep breath.
“His name is Michael.””
The name meant nothing.
“Michael who?””
“I don’t know his last name.””
I turned back.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“He never told me.””
The answer made no sense.
“You’re telling me there’s another man connected to my daughter, and you don’t even know who he is?””
Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.
“He was the reason Daniel became afraid.””
That caught my attention.
“What?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“When Daniel found out I was pregnant, he wasn’t the only one interested.””
“Interested?””
Lauren nodded.
“Michael approached me.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because he knew things about Daniel.””
The pieces refused to connect.
“What things?””
“That Daniel wasn’t who he said he was.””
I felt a chill.
“Explain.””
Lauren sat down slowly.
“Daniel told me he owned a construction company. He told me he traveled for business. He told me he had money.””
“And?””
“He lied.””
The room felt colder.
“He had debts. He had people looking for him.””
James returned suddenly.
Both Lauren and I looked up.
“Everything downstairs is clear.””
My father wasn’t with him.
My stomach dropped.
“Where’s Dad?””
“He went to check the basement.””
“Alone?””
James looked annoyed.
“He insisted.””
A loud sound came from below.
A crash.
Everyone froze.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Richard!””
James moved toward the basement door.
“I’ll go.””
“No.””
My father’s voice came from behind us.
We all turned.
He was standing in the hallway.
But something was wrong.
His face was pale.
And he was holding an old black box.
“Dad?””
He walked slowly into the room.
“I found this hidden behind the basement wall.””
He placed the box on the table.
My heart sank.
Another hidden thing.
Another piece of a life I thought I knew.
“What is it?””
Dad looked at Lauren.
“Something I should have destroyed.””
Nobody touched it.
Finally, I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Old photographs.
The first one showed Lauren at the hospital.
The second showed Daniel.
The third showed a man I didn’t recognize.
I looked closer.
It was the same man from the photograph on my phone.
Michael.
My fingers tightened around the picture.
“Why do you have this?””
My father looked ashamed.
“Because I investigated him.””
“Why?””
“Because I suspected something was wrong.””
“With Daniel?””
Dad nodded.
“He wasn’t just controlling Lauren.””
He looked at Emma.
“He was involved in something bigger.””
I stared at the photographs.
“What kind of something?””
Dad hesitated.
Then he pulled out another document.
“This.””
I unfolded it.
It was a report.
A private investigation.
The name at the top was Daniel Carter.
Below it were several pages.
And then I saw a section highlighted.
My blood ran cold.
*Possible illegal adoption network connections.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lauren whispered:
“Daniel wasn’t trying to get Emma back because he missed her.””
The room went silent.
“He wanted her because of who she was connected to.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Lauren looked at my daughter.
“I don’t know.””
A terrifying thought entered my mind.
“Then why did you say she was yours?””
Lauren looked at me.
“Because biologically, she is.””
She swallowed.
“But there’s something else.””
“What?””
Lauren’s hands shook.
“When I signed the adoption papers…”
She stopped.
“Lauren.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was told the adoption agency was carefully chosen.””
My father looked at her.
“Lauren.””
“What?””
His expression changed.
“Who told you that?””
She looked confused.
“Daniel.””
The room became silent.
I felt sick.
“Daniel arranged the adoption?””
Lauren nodded slowly.
“He said he knew a private agency.””
My father’s face went pale.
“No.””
“What?””
He grabbed the documents.
“No, that’s impossible.””
“What is it?””
Dad flipped through the papers.
Then he stopped.
I had never seen my father look afraid like that.
“Richard?””
He looked at me.
“The agency listed here…”
His voice dropped.
“It wasn’t licensed.””
My mother covered her mouth.
Lauren stepped backward.
“What?””
Dad looked at her.
“You didn’t give Emma to an adoption agency.””
The room froze.
“You gave her to Daniel’s people.””
My stomach turned.
“No.””
Dad looked at the old documents.
“I think the adoption was never real.””
Nobody spoke.
Because if that was true…
Then everything we believed about Emma’s first six months had been built on a lie.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone jumped.
Another message.
This time, from a different number.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*Ask your father what happened the night he chose to save you instead of Lauren.*
I looked up slowly.
My father’s face had gone completely white.
Because he knew exactly what the message meant.
May you like
And before anyone could ask, he whispered:
“Michael knows.””
