Chapter 11: The Night Robert Carter Died

The medical report arrived at Daniel's office shortly after noon.

It contained six pages of clinical notes, medication records, and an incident review.

I read every line.

Robert had been admitted following severe chest pain and difficulty breathing.

His condition was serious, but initially stable.

Then, at 9:18 p.m., his blood pressure dropped dramatically.

At 9:31 p.m., the attending nurse documented an unexpected reaction.

At 9:42 p.m., he was pronounced dead.

The report noted that a medication had been administered outside the hospital's standard prescription schedule.

I looked at Daniel.

"Who gave it to him?""

"The nurse recorded that it was brought in by a family member.""

"Which one?""

He turned the page.

The name was written in blue ink.

Patricia Carter.

My stomach tightened.

"She brought medication into the hospital?""

"That's what the report says.""

"Was she authorized?""

"No.""

I leaned back.

"Did the hospital investigate?""

"An internal review was conducted. The medication was initially described as a supplement brought in for comfort care.""

"Was it dangerous?""

Daniel hesitated.

"The report doesn't establish that it caused Robert's death. We mustn't jump to conclusions.""

I nodded.

I didn't want assumptions.

I wanted facts.

"Can we speak to the nurse?""

"Her name is Sandra Mitchell. She no longer works at the hospital, but the attorney handling the estate has located her.""

"Where is she?""

"She lives about forty minutes away.""

I stood.

"Let's go.""

Daniel called ahead.

An hour later, we were sitting in Sandra's living room.

She was a woman in her late fifties with short brown hair and tired eyes.

She looked at the medical report Daniel had brought.

"I remember that night," she said.

My throat tightened.

"Can you tell us what happened?""

Sandra folded her hands.

"Mr. Carter was conscious when I first saw him. He was frightened, but he was alert. He kept asking for his daughter-in-law.""

"Emily?""

She nodded.

"He said he needed to tell you something important.""

I felt tears gathering.

"Did you call me?""

"I tried to follow the instructions on the chart.""

"Which said to call Margaret Adams?""

Sandra looked uncomfortable.

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

"She told me she would contact you. She also said Mr. Carter was confused and that we shouldn't upset him with unnecessary visitors.""

I swallowed.

"Did you believe her?""

"At the time, I assumed she was the person coordinating family communication.""

Sandra continued.

"Later that evening, Patricia arrived with a small bag.""

"What was inside?""

"Medication bottles and a packet of herbal supplements.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you administer anything?""

Sandra shook her head.

"I refused to give him anything without a physician's order. I explained that the hospital had to verify every medication.""

"Then what happened?""

"Patricia became angry.""

I looked at her.

"What did she say?""

Sandra hesitated.

"She said the family had already discussed his care and that I was interfering.""

"Did she leave the medication?""

"She handed it to another staff member, who placed it on the counter while checking with the doctor.""

Daniel wrote something down.

"Was the medication ever administered?""

Sandra looked at the report.

"I don't know what happened afterward. I was called away to another patient.""

"Did you return?""

"Yes. About twenty minutes later.""

Her voice dropped.

"Mr. Carter was deteriorating.""

I felt my fingers go cold.

"Did he receive the medication?""

"I cannot say with certainty.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"Thank you. That's important.""

Sandra looked at me.

"There's something else.""

I leaned forward.

"What?""

"Before I left the room, Mr. Carter grabbed my hand.""

She blinked several times.

"He said, 'Please don't let them tell Emily I was confused.''"

My eyes filled.

"He said that?""

"Yes.""

I lowered my head.

For four years, I had believed I had failed Robert by not being there.

Now I knew he had tried to reach me.

And the people around him had prevented it.

Sandra stood and walked toward a cabinet.

She returned with a small notebook.

"I kept this because I felt something wasn't right.""

She opened it.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the date of Robert's admission.

*Family member requested medication be administered. Nurse declined pending physician approval. Patient requested Emily. Family refused contact.*

I stared at the words.

"Who wrote this?""

"I did.""

Daniel took a photograph.

"Would you be willing to provide a formal statement?""

Sandra nodded.

"Yes.""

Before we left, she touched my arm.

"I'm sorry, Emily.""

I looked at her.

"You did what you could.""

In the car, Daniel remained quiet for several minutes.

Then he said, "We need to be very careful with this information.""

"Because we can't prove the medication caused his death?""

"Correct. The medical examiner and appropriate authorities would need to assess that. But the deliberate obstruction of contact and the unauthorized medication issue warrant further investigation.""

I nodded.

"I don't want revenge.""

Daniel looked at me.

"What do you want?""

"The truth. Whatever it is.""

At 5:30, I returned to the apartment.

Noah was building a tower from plastic blocks.

Lily was drawing a picture of our family.

She had drawn herself, Noah, and me holding hands.

There was an empty space beside us.

I sat down.

"Who's that space for?""

Lily shrugged.

"I don't know.""

I kissed her hair.

"That's okay.""

Then Noah looked up.

"Mom, Dad called.""

I froze.

"When?""

"At school. He asked if I wanted to visit him.""

"What did you say?""

"I said I needed to ask you.""

I smiled faintly.

"That's a good answer.""

He returned to his blocks.

Then he said, almost casually:

"Dad sounded scared.""

I looked at him.

"Did he say why?""

"He said Grandma Patricia was angry and that everyone was fighting.""

I felt my chest tighten.

Noah added, "He told me not to tell you something.""

I put down the drawing.

"What was it?""

"He said if anyone asks, I should say I never heard Grandma talking about Grandpa's medicine.""

I went completely still.

I kept my voice gentle.

"Did you hear Grandma talking about medicine?""

Noah nodded.

"At the house. Before the anniversary dinner.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"What did she say?""

He frowned, trying to remember.

"She was on the phone in the kitchen. She said the old bottle was gone, and Dad needed to make sure nobody found the new one.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Did you hear anything else?""

He nodded.

"She said Grandpa's doctor had asked questions.""

I looked at Daniel, who had just entered the apartment.

He had heard the last part.

He crouched beside Noah.

"Buddy, you haven't done anything wrong. Can you remember when you heard that conversation?""

"Maybe two weeks ago.""

Daniel nodded.

"Thank you. That's helpful.""

Noah looked worried.

"Is Grandma in trouble?""

I pulled him into a hug.

"That's for the grown-ups to figure out. You don't have to worry about it.""

After the children went to bed, Daniel sat across from me.

"Emily, we need to document what Noah told us. But I don't want to question him repeatedly or put pressure on him.""

"Agreed.""

"We should also notify the relevant authorities about the medical concerns.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

My phone rang.

This time, it was my mother.

I answered.

"Mom?""

Her voice was barely recognizable.

"Emily, I need to tell you something.""

I closed my eyes.

"Go ahead.""

"I was there that night.""

"I know.""

"No. You don't understand. Patricia gave Robert something.""

I gripped the phone.

"What?""

"She said it was medication the doctor had approved.""

"Did you see the bottle?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know what was inside?""

She began crying.

"Not at first.""

I stood.

"Mom, tell me exactly what happened.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Patricia said Robert was suffering. She said the medicine would calm him down.""

"Did she give it to him?""

"I saw her hand it to someone.""

"Who?""

My mother whispered a name.

"Thomas Vance.""

I stared at Daniel.

He immediately began writing.

"Why would Thomas have anything to do with Robert's medical treatment?""

My mother sobbed.

"Because he was there to make Robert sign something.""

My heart pounded.

"What?""

"The original trust amendment. Robert refused to sign it.""

"Then what happened?""

She paused.

Then she said:

"Robert collapsed before he could finish telling us what Nathan had done.""

The line went silent.

I whispered, "Mom?""

But she had hung up.

Daniel immediately called the police contact handling the referral.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily, Thomas Vance may have been present when Robert received the medication.""

I stared at the floor.

The man who had prepared the forged financial documents.

The man who had tried to remove my children from school.

The man who had received $240,000.

He might also have been involved in the events surrounding Robert's death.

And suddenly, Nathan's threats made sense.

May you like

He wasn't afraid of losing the house.

He was afraid of what we might discover.
