Chapter 14: The Last Lie

The recording was played in a secure room at the investigator's office.

I sat beside Daniel, my hands folded tightly in my lap.

Detective Bennett stood near the door.

She had warned us that the recording might be disturbing.

I thought I was prepared.

I wasn't.

The audio began with the sound of a car door closing.

Then Thomas spoke.

"He's refusing to sign.""

Nathan sounded angry.

"He doesn't have a choice.""

"He does. He's the owner of the trust.""

"Not if we get him to sign the amendment.""

"He knows what you're doing.""

A pause.

Then Nathan said, "What did you give him?""

Thomas answered quietly.

"Nothing that should have caused a problem.""

My breath caught.

Nathan's voice rose.

"That's not what I asked.""

"Patricia brought the bottle. I told her it was the medication he normally took.""

"You told her?""

"She didn't ask questions.""

There was a long silence.

Then Nathan said, "He was conscious when I arrived.""

"Yes.""

"He was asking for Emily.""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't anyone call her?""

Thomas gave a short laugh.

"Because Margaret said she would handle it.""

I closed my eyes.

Then came the sentence that made my hands go numb.

Nathan said, "If Emily finds out what Dad was trying to leave her, we're finished.""

Thomas answered:

"If Robert dies, the only person who can connect us to the medication is Margaret.""

Nathan's reply followed.

"Then make sure she never talks.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Detective Bennett finally said, "We have submitted the audio for forensic authentication. It will be compared with known voice samples and the original device.""

I stared at the table.

"Does this prove they caused his death?""

"No," she answered carefully.

"It establishes that they discussed the medication and the circumstances surrounding his final hours. We need medical experts to determine whether the substance contributed to his death and whether anyone acted unlawfully.""

I nodded.

"Then find out.""

"We will.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"There's another issue. Nathan's financial conduct and the forged documents.""

Detective Bennett nodded.

"We're already coordinating with the financial crimes unit.""

I looked at her.

"Can my mother be charged?""

"That depends on what the evidence establishes. Her cooperation may be relevant, but it doesn't erase any conduct she participated in.""

I understood.

My mother had not been an innocent bystander.

She had made choices.

She had chosen Nathan's promises over my safety.

She had chosen silence when Robert was asking for help.

And now she would have to answer for it.

Later that afternoon, Margaret came to Daniel's office.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Her hair was uncombed. Her eyes were swollen.

She sat across from me without speaking.

I didn't offer her a hug.

Daniel explained that Detective Bennett would be taking her formal statement.

My mother nodded.

Then she looked at me.

"I know you hate me.""

I kept my voice quiet.

"I don't know what I feel yet.""

She lowered her eyes.

"That's fair.""

"Why did you do it?""

She began crying.

"Because I was drowning.""

I waited.

"Years ago, I borrowed money to help a friend. She promised to repay me. She didn't. The debt grew, and I was terrified of losing my house.""

"So Nathan offered to pay it.""

"Yes.""

"In exchange for helping him?""

She nodded.

"At first, I thought it was just paperwork. He said Robert had already agreed to everything. He said you would be protected.""

"You signed my name.""

"I believed he would make it right.""

"You helped him use our children's names.""

She covered her face.

"I know.""

"You let him take their education money.""

"I thought it was temporary.""

"You watched me leave my marriage believing I was losing my mind while you knew he was having an affair with my sister.""

She sobbed.

"I didn't know how to stop it.""

I leaned forward.

"You could have told me.""

"I was ashamed.""

"So you let me suffer instead?""

She had no answer.

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I asked, "Did Robert know you had given Thomas the hospital's contact number?""

She nodded.

"Did he confront you?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Earlier that evening. Before he was taken to the hospital.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"He told me he had changed the trust. He said you would receive everything you were entitled to.""

"Then what?""

"He said he was going to call you himself.""

I swallowed.

"Why didn't you let him?""

"Because Nathan told me if Robert spoke to you, you would report the financial fraud. He said everyone would go to prison.""

"And you believed him.""

"I was frightened.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had written down every word.

My mother leaned toward me.

"Emily, I can't undo it. But I can tell them everything.""

I nodded.

"Then do that.""

She reached across the table.

I pulled my hands away.

"Don't ask me to forgive you today.""

She withdrew her hand.

"I won't.""

After her statement, Daniel and I reviewed the latest financial findings.

The investigation had uncovered a series of transfers involving Carter Family Holdings.

The company had been used to receive money from the family property account, pay Brielle's expenses, and move funds away from the children's education account.

But the most important discovery concerned the property loan.

A forensic examiner had compared the signature on the guarantee with my genuine signatures from years of tax documents and bank records.

The conclusion was clear.

The signature had not been written by me.

The notary stamp was also invalid.

My mother had used an expired commission.

The lender had now been formally notified of the suspected fraud.

Daniel placed the final report in front of me.

"This strengthens our position in the foreclosure proceedings.""

"Can we stop the sale?""

"We can seek an emergency injunction while the court examines the validity of the guarantee and the underlying loan documents.""

"What happens to the house?""

"Your ownership interest remains protected by Robert's original deed and the trust documents. The court will need to determine the full financial consequences.""

I nodded.

For the first time in months, I felt something resembling solid ground beneath my feet.

Then Daniel received a call.

He listened.

His expression tightened.

"Understood. Thank you.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?""

"Nathan has been taken in for questioning.""

I stared at him.

"About Robert?""

"About the recording, the financial transactions, and the suspected forgery.""

I looked out the window.

I had imagined this moment many times.

I thought I would feel triumph.

Instead, I felt tired.

"Can I see my children now?"" I asked.

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Yes. And I think that's exactly what you should do.""

That evening, Noah and Lily sat beside me on the apartment sofa.

Noah was doing homework.

Lily was coloring a picture.

I watched them for a long time.

Then Noah looked up.

"Mom, is Dad coming home?""

I chose my words carefully.

"Your dad has some serious things he needs to answer for. The adults are working through them.""

"Are we going to lose our house?""

I brushed his hair away from his forehead.

"No. Whatever happens with the house, you will always have a home with me.""

Lily climbed into my lap.

"Can we still see Grandma?""

I took a breath.

"That's something we'll decide when it's safe and when the grown-ups have been honest.""

She nodded.

Then she held up her drawing.

It showed three people standing beneath a yellow sun.

This time, there was no empty space.

I smiled.

"Who's this?""

"Us.""

I kissed her forehead.

"That's my favorite picture.""

Later, after the children were asleep, my phone buzzed.

A message from Nathan.

*I know you think I ruined everything. But there's one thing you still don't know.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

*The money Robert left you wasn't just the company shares.*

Then a third.

*He left you the original evidence that could prove Thomas arranged everything.*

I sat upright.

Daniel was still in the next room.

I called him.

He came immediately.

I showed him the messages.

He read them twice.

"Do you know what he's talking about?""

"No.""

Daniel picked up his phone.

"We need to ask the trustee.""

Before he could make the call, another message arrived.

This one was from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Robert's old desk.

The hidden compartment.

And an empty space where the portable hard drive had been.

I stared at the image.

We had recovered the drive.

But someone had taken something else.

A small envelope that had been underneath it.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph read:

*You found the wrong copy. The original is still missing.*
