Chapter 4 - VANESSA DID NOT START AS A MONSTER

I wanted to believe she had always been fake.
That would have made divorce easier.
The evidence did not let me.
Old videos.
Vanessa holding Lily when she had fever.
Sleeping on nursery floor after Samantha died? Wait Vanessa came later. Maybe during early relationship she helped.
Teaching Lily bike? Six-year-old maybe not.
Making pancakes.
Reading.
There were real moments.
Then resentment.
Then Michael.
Then entitlement.
Then control.
It happened gradually.
That scared me more.
Vanessa gave a recorded statement with attorney.
She said:
“I loved Daniel.”
“Did you love Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Then why pressure her to call you Mom?”
“Because I wanted to feel like family.”
“Did Daniel ask you to?”
“No.”
“Did Lily?”
“No.”
“Did you know her mother’s letter specifically warned against forced title?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“Why continue?”
“Because the letter made me feel Emma was controlling our marriage from grave.”
There.
Then:
“Did you plan trust theft when you married Daniel?”
“No.”
Evidence supported.
Michael had mentioned money, but no scheme initially.
Then when did?
About nine months into marriage.
After fight with Samantha trustee over reimbursement.
Vanessa submitted $12,000 request for home “child wellness renovation.”
What was it?
A luxury playroom and spa-like nanny suite.
Samantha approved only child-related portion $3,000.
Vanessa felt insulted.
She said:
“I was raising beneficiary but stranger got to question expenses.”
There.
Then Michael said:
“Become trustee.”
That began.
Then Daniel traveled more because company merger.
Vanessa resentment.
Then Lily’s grief intensified around second anniversary of Emma's death.
She drew Mom.
Asked questions.
Vanessa felt rejected.
Michael reframed as instability.
Then boarding school idea.
Then forged documents.
Then physical escalation.
Each step.
Then detective asked:
“Did you intend to keep Lily at Harbor Ridge permanently?”
“No.”
“How long?”
“Three months maybe.”
At six.
Then:
“What did you expect happens to trust during placement?”
“I would become managing parent trustee.”
“Why?”
“Daniel could focus on work.”
There.
Then:
“Did he ask you?”
“No.”
Always.
Then:
“Did you plan to use trust money for yourself?”
“I believed fees for management would be legitimate.”
“Would you personally receive fees?”
“Yes.”
So yes.
Then:
“Did you know your actions could make Lily more distressed?”
She cried.
“Yes.”
This was key.
She knew provoking could worsen.
Then:
“Did you do it because distress supported placement?”
Long silence.
“Sometimes.”
I had to leave when reading transcript later.
That was deliberate emotional harm.
Then hair pull.
She admitted anger.
Not planned.
Cabinet file call happened after.
Then locked bedroom.
She admitted.
No marks, but still confinement.
Then broken glass staged.
Admitted.
Then Harbor Ridge trip.
She lied ice cream.
Admitted.
Then forged signature?
She did not create technically but knew Michael had not obtained my consent and planned ratification after.
Conspiracy.
Then Emma signature.
She suspected fake, did not stop.
Then one final question:
“Did you ever wish Lily were dead so you could inherit?”
“No.”
Evidence did not show.
Then why research contingent inheritance?
“Michael showed me.”
“Were you interested?”
“Yes.”
Terrible.
But no homicide plan.
Good.
Then legal charges:
Child abuse/endangerment, unlawful confinement, attempted financial fraud/conspiracy, falsification, unauthorized account access.
Michael: forgery, attempted trust fraud, conspiracy, professional misconduct, privacy breaches.
Dr. Price? She was misled partially. Investigation found she failed consent verification but did not knowingly conspire. Professional discipline.
Harbor Ridge: civil/regulatory issue for intake based on questionable consent. They cooperated.
No one else inflated.
Then Samantha’s role examined too.
Independent audit found she did what trust required.
But she had failed to insist on direct communication after months of Vanessa intercepting.
She acknowledged.
Trust company strengthened direct-confirmation requirements.
No hero perfect.
Then I looked at myself.
Why did Vanessa become primary household authority?
Because I let.
She was efficient.
I was grieving.
Then working.
She took school emails.
Doctor.
Calendar.
Trust mail.
I said thank you.
Convenience became monopoly on information.
Then Lily’s words came through Vanessa.
“She had bad day.”
“She lied.”
“She misses Emma too much.”
I stopped hearing daughter directly.
That was my failure.
Then therapist told me:
“Your job is not to distrust every caregiver. Your job is to avoid one person becoming sole interpreter.”
May you like
Exactly.
Then I changed.
