Chapter 7 - THE FIRST TIME LILY SAID “MOM” AGAIN

It happened three years later.

Lily was nine.

We were watching Emma video.

She whispered:

“Mom.”

Not “Mommy.”

Just Mom.

Then cried.

“I forgot her voice before these videos.”

I held.

She said:

“Is that bad?”

“No.”

Memory changes.

Then:

“Did Vanessa make me forget?”

“No.”

I would not give her that power.

“You were little.”

Then:

“Did I ever call Vanessa Mom?”

“Yes. A few times.”

She looked guilty.

“Was Mommy mad?”

“No.”

“How know?”

“Because she wrote you could love someone else.”

Then Lily smiled.

Good.

Then Vanessa had sent annual letters through attorney.

Lily had refused first two.

At nine, asked.

Letter:

Lily, I am sorry I tried to make the word Mom into something you owed me.

Then:

I knew you missed Emma and treated that as rejection of me. That was my insecurity, not your wrongdoing.

Then:

I am also sorry for hurting you, lying about your behavior, and taking you to Harbor Ridge without your dad’s permission.

Specific.

Then:

You never had to become less Emma’s daughter for me to matter.

Lily cried.

Then asked:

“Can I write?”

“Yes.”

She wrote:

I forgive you for hair. I don’t forgive boarding school yet.

Clear.

Vanessa replied:

That is okay.

Then years.

No rush.

Then Lily at twelve chose mediated meeting.

Vanessa looked older.

No touch without ask.

“Can I hug you?”

Lily said no.

Vanessa:

“Okay.”

Good.

Then questions.

“Did you marry Dad for money?”

Vanessa:

“No.”

“Did you know about my money?”

“Yes.”

“Did it make Dad more attractive?”

Long pause.

“Yes.”

Lily appreciated honesty maybe.

Then:

“Did you love him?”

“Yes.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why make me scared?”

“Because love did not stop me from wanting control.”

Good.

Then:

“Were you going to leave me at that school?”

“For several weeks or months.”

Lily:

“That’s leaving.”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you know Mom’s letter said not to?”

“Yes.”

“Then you knew.”

“Yes.”

There.

No “now I know.”

She knew then.

Then Lily:

“Do you want me to call you anything?”

“Vanessa.”

Good.

Then after meeting, Lily allowed brief hug next time, not this.

Choice.

Then I did not use her reconciliation as proof I should forgive.

Separate.

I had coffee once.

Vanessa apologized to me.

I said:

“I forgive parts.”

No remarriage.

No friendship maybe limited.

Then she asked about trust.

I said:

“Not your business.”

May you like

She nodded.

Growth.
