Chapter 13: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

I had spent thirty-six years believing that the worst thing a mother could experience was losing her child.

That afternoon, I discovered there was something almost as painful.

Realizing your child had helped destroy the family you had sacrificed everything to protect.

Mr. Haines drove while Olivia contacted the authorities. I sat in the passenger seat, reading Mia's messages repeatedly.

Grandma, please come get me.

Mom says I'm going to live with Michael.

She found out I told you everything.

I called her.

The phone rang four times.

Then someone answered.

“Grandma?””

Mia was crying.

“Sweetheart, where are you?””

“Upstairs. Mom is downstairs with Michael.””

“Is your father there?””

“No. He left this morning.””

I closed my eyes.

“Listen to me. Don't argue with your mother. Stay somewhere safe. We're coming.””

Mia whispered something that made my stomach tighten.

“Grandma, I found something in Dad's office.””

“What?””

“A folder. It has your name on it.””

“What kind of folder?””

“I don't know. But there's a picture of Grandpa Richard inside.””

Before I could ask another question, Brooke's voice sounded in the background.

“Mia! Who are you talking to?””

The call ended.

I looked at Mr. Haines.

“Drive faster.””

When we reached my house, two police vehicles were already parked outside.

Brooke stood on the porch.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a leather handbag. Michael Bennett stood beside her, his hands tucked into his pockets.

He looked older than I remembered.

But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes I had seen in photographs from decades earlier.

The same eyes Daniel had inherited.

Brooke smiled when she saw me.

“Evelyn. What a surprise.””

I stepped out of the car.

“Where is my granddaughter?””

“Inside.””

“I want to see her.””

“She is perfectly fine.””

“Then bring her out.””

Michael stepped forward.

“There's no need to make this dramatic.””

I turned toward him.

“You have no right to tell me what is necessary.””

His expression hardened.

“I'm trying to protect my family.””

I almost laughed.

“Your family?””

Brooke touched his arm.

“Michael, don't.””

I looked at the two of them.

For months, they had treated my home like a business opportunity. They had treated my husband like an obstacle. They had treated my money like something they were entitled to.

And now they were standing on my porch discussing family.

“Where is Mia?”” I repeated.

The front door opened.

My granddaughter appeared.

Her cheeks were wet, and she was holding a backpack.

“Grandma!””

She ran down the steps.

I caught her carefully, mindful of my knee.

She buried her face against my shoulder.

“I want to go home with you.””

“You can come with me, sweetheart.””

Brooke stepped forward.

“She is not going anywhere.””

One of the officers approached.

“Ma'am, we need everyone to remain calm.””

Mr. Haines handed him the documentation concerning the financial investigation and explained that there were concerns about potential coercion and the recordings.

Brooke's expression changed.

“You people are making a huge mistake.””

The officer asked her to step aside.

Michael immediately interrupted.

“This is a private family matter.””

“Sir, please step back.””

Michael looked at me.

“You have no idea what you're getting involved in.””

I met his eyes.

“I know exactly what I'm involved in. You helped steal from my husband.””

His jaw tightened.

“Richard was not the saint you think he was.””

I felt Mia stiffen beside me.

“Don't speak about Grandpa.””

Michael laughed.

“You don't know anything about him.””

“I know he loved me,” I replied.

“And I know he loved Daniel.””

Michael's face twisted.

“Daniel is my son.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at him.

“Then why have you spent his entire adult life helping destroy him?””

For the first time, Michael had no immediate answer.

The officers separated us.

Brooke was asked to remain while investigators examined the circumstances surrounding Mia's attempted removal and the financial evidence.

Michael was escorted toward the driveway for questioning.

Before he left, he turned to Brooke.

“Don't say anything.””

That single sentence told me more than any confession could have.

Mia clutched my hand.

“Grandma, there's something else.””

I looked down.

“What is it?””

“The folder.””

I remembered.

We went inside with Olivia and one of the officers.

Mia led us to Daniel's former office.

The room smelled of expensive cologne and stale coffee. Several boxes had been pushed against the wall.

She pointed to a locked filing cabinet.

“Dad always kept important things there.””

“Do you know where the key is?””

She nodded.

“He keeps it in the drawer.””

She opened the bottom desk drawer and found a small brass key.

The cabinet opened with a click.

Inside were financial statements, business contracts, and several envelopes.

Then I saw a photograph.

It showed Richard sitting in his favorite chair.

Beside him stood Daniel.

On the back, someone had written:

December 2. The last time Dad believed I was telling him the truth.

I turned it over again.

There was a folded letter underneath.

The envelope had been opened.

The handwriting was Daniel's.

I unfolded it.

Dad, I know what Brooke is planning. I know about the account. I know about Michael. I should have stopped everything before it got this far.

I felt my chest tighten.

The letter continued.

But if I tell Mom, Brooke says she'll expose everything about my debts and the money I've already taken.

I don't know how to fix this.

I don't know how to face her.

The final sentence was written in darker ink.

If something happens to you, I will spend the rest of my life knowing I could have stopped it.

I lowered the letter.

Mia looked at me.

“Grandma?””

I wiped my eyes.

“Did you know your father wrote this?””

She shook her head.

“Does Dad know you found it?””

“No.””

Olivia examined the remaining papers.

One document was a loan agreement between Carter Construction and a private lender.

Another was a handwritten list of payments.

Several payments were marked with the initials M.B.

Then she found something else.

A sealed envelope addressed to me.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Evelyn,

If this letter reaches you, I have failed to tell you the truth myself.

I made a terrible decision. I thought borrowing money from the protected account would give me enough time to save the business. Brooke told me it was temporary. Michael promised everything would be restored.

But I discovered that the money was never intended to return.

I confronted Brooke. She threatened to tell Mia that Michael was my biological father and that Richard had known all along.

I was afraid.

Not for myself. For Mia.

I know what I've done to you. I know I helped put the house at risk. I cannot ask you to forgive me.

But there is one thing I need you to understand.

I never wanted Dad dead.

I read that last sentence again.

Then I looked at the date.

The letter had been written two weeks before Richard died.

I felt my knees weaken.

Daniel had known about the plan.

He had participated in the financial betrayal.

But had he known what Brooke intended to do to Richard?

An officer approached.

“Mrs. Carter, we found something in the garage.””

“What?””

“A box containing medication bottles and several prescription labels.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“Whose medication?””

“Your late husband's.””

My heart began pounding.

“Where did they come from?””

The officer glanced at his notes.

“They were hidden inside a storage compartment. Several labels appear to have been replaced.””

I looked at Mia.

She was staring at the photograph of Richard.

Then she whispered:

“Grandma, Mom told me Grandpa was already dying when she changed his medicine.””

I turned toward her.

“What exactly did she say?””

Mia began crying.

“She said nobody would ever know what really happened because Grandpa was too sick to remember.””

I held her close.

And then she told me something else.

Something that made the officer immediately reach for his radio.

“Grandma, Mom said she didn't do it alone.””

I swallowed.

“Who helped her?””

May you like

Mia looked toward the garage.

“Dad.””
