Chapter 9: The Secret That Could Destroy the Family
I couldn't hear anything except the sound of my own heartbeat.
For thirty-nine years, I had believed Daniel was Richard's son.
I remembered the day he was born.
Richard had cried when the nurse placed him in his arms. He had kissed my forehead and whispered that our family was finally complete.
He had taught Daniel to ride a bicycle, helped him with his homework, attended every school performance, and sat beside him through his first heartbreak.
Now my sister was telling me that none of it had been what I thought.
I looked at Carol.
“Take that back.””
She shook her head.
“Evie…”
“Take it back.””
“I can't.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“Richard knew?””
Carol nodded.
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
“Since Daniel was a baby.””
I closed my eyes.
The bank office seemed to tilt.
Mr. Haines gently guided me into a chair.
“Mrs. Carter, perhaps we should continue this somewhere private.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I want the truth.””
I turned to Carol.
“Who was his father?””
She looked down.
“His name was Michael.””
I frowned.
“Michael who?””
“Michael Bennett.””
I knew that name.
Michael had worked with Richard at the manufacturing plant.
He had been a close friend of ours before Daniel was born.
I remembered him attending our wedding anniversary party.
I remembered him holding Daniel when he was a baby.
I remembered Richard introducing him as Uncle Michael.
My stomach turned.
“How?””
Carol began crying.
“I was young. I made a terrible mistake.””
I stared at her.
“You were my sister.””
“I know.””
“You knew Richard and I were trying to have a child.””
“I know.””
“You knew what Daniel meant to him.””
She nodded.
I felt something inside me break.
Mr. Haines quietly asked Melissa to give us the room.
When the door closed, I looked at Carol again.
“Did Richard ever confront you?””
“He confronted Michael first.””
“When?””
“Shortly after Daniel was born.””
I sat completely still.
Carol continued.
“Michael confessed. Richard was devastated. He came to me afterward and told me he knew.””
I covered my mouth.
“What did he do?””
“He asked whether I wanted to tell you.””
“And you said?””
“I begged him not to.””
I stared at her.
“You let me live my entire life believing something different.””
Carol wiped her cheeks.
“Richard said Daniel was his son in every way that mattered. He chose to raise him. He never treated him differently.””
I looked toward the window.
That part was true.
Richard had loved Daniel with everything he had.
He had never made him feel unwanted.
He had never used his birth as a weapon.
I remembered Richard teaching Daniel how to shave.
I remembered the two of them fishing at the lake.
I remembered Richard sitting beside Daniel at his graduation.
And suddenly, all those memories felt fragile.
Not because Richard's love had been false.
But because everyone around me had known a truth I had been denied.
“Why didn't Richard tell me?””
Carol's voice broke.
“He said he didn't want to destroy our family.””
I laughed quietly.
“Apparently, everyone has been protecting our family by lying to me.””
She reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“Don't.””
She withdrew.
Mr. Haines returned to the room.
He had been speaking to Melissa and another bank representative.
“Mrs. Carter, we have confirmation that the scheduled transfer is being held. I also need to discuss what your sister just told us.””
I nodded.
He looked at Carol.
“Did Brooke threaten you with a recording?””
Carol nodded.
“Do you know where it is?””
“No.””
“Does it contain an admission of forgery?””
Carol hesitated.
“It contains me discussing the paperwork with Martin.””
Mr. Haines looked serious.
“Then we need to preserve that recording and establish the full context.””
Carol began trembling.
“Brooke said she'd make sure I went to prison.””
“Did you participate in preparing false documents?””
“I helped arrange the meeting. I introduced them to Martin. I didn't know the papers would be used to take Evelyn's house.””
Mr. Haines wrote something down.
“That's a distinction the authorities will need to examine.””
I looked at my sister.
“Why did Brooke bring up Daniel's biological father?””
Carol hesitated.
“Because she found old letters Richard had kept.””
“What letters?””
“Letters between Michael and me.””
I felt sick.
“Where are they?””
“I don't know. Brooke has copies.””
Mr. Haines looked up.
“Does Daniel know?””
Carol shook her head.
“No.””
I stared at the bank statement.
Everything had become tangled together.
The stolen money.
The forged documents.
The false medical report.
The secret account.
And now the truth about Daniel's birth.
I wanted to go home.
I wanted to sit in Richard's chair and pretend the world was still the place I had known.
But there was no going back.
That evening, Daniel called.
I almost let it go to voicemail.
Then I answered.
“Mom?””
“What?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“About what?””
“About Aunt Carol.””
I looked at Mr. Haines, who was sitting across from me.
“What about her?””
“She told you something, didn't she?””
I said nothing.
Daniel sighed.
“Look, I know she told you about Michael.””
My blood ran cold.
“You already knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Brooke found out a few months ago.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did your father tell you?””
“No. Brooke found the letters.””
I felt my fingers tighten around the phone.
“And what did you do with that information?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Nothing.””
“Nothing?””
“Mom, I don't care who my biological father was. Dad raised me.””
For the first time that evening, I felt a small wave of relief.
Then Daniel continued.
“But Brooke said the information could be useful.””
I went still.
“Useful how?””
“She thought it might explain why Dad left the money protected in your name instead of mine.””
I stared at the wall.
“Richard protected my money because he wanted me to be safe.””
“That's what he told everyone.””
“And what did Brooke think?””
Daniel was silent.
I felt a chill.
“Daniel?””
“She said Dad might have felt guilty.””
“Guilty about what?””
“She thinks he knew the truth and wanted to compensate you.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
My husband had loved his son.
He had protected his wife.
And Brooke had somehow twisted that love into an excuse to steal from us.
I spoke quietly.
“Your father knew the truth, Daniel. He knew it and still chose you every single day.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Do you understand that?””
“I know.””
“Then why are you helping Brooke destroy everything he worked for?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I owe money, Mom.””
“How much?””
He exhaled.
“Over six hundred thousand dollars.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Six hundred thousand?””
“The business is finished. I borrowed money to keep it alive. Brooke said the house and the protected account would solve everything.””
“And the man she was seeing?””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“You know about him?””
“I know enough.””
He took a shaky breath.
“His name is Michael Bennett.””
I froze.
“Michael?””
“Yes.””
I couldn't speak.
Daniel continued.
“Brooke said he was going to help us get out of debt. She promised him part of the money.””
I gripped the phone.
“Daniel, do you understand who Michael Bennett is?””
He hesitated.
“Brooke's former boyfriend.””
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
I took a breath.
“Michael Bennett is your biological father.””
The silence on the other end was absolute.
Then Daniel whispered:
“What?””
I couldn't bring myself to repeat it.
Finally, he spoke again.
“Mom, that's impossible.””
“Your aunt admitted it.””
I heard something fall.
Then Daniel's voice changed.
“Brooke knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“I don't know.””
He began breathing heavily.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Mom, Michael didn't just help Brooke with the money.””
“What else?””
“He told me something last night.””
I gripped the phone.
“What?””
Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.
“He said Richard didn't die of natural causes.””
My entire body went still.
“What are you talking about?””
“He said Dad's medication was changed during his final weeks.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Who changed it?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“Brooke.””
And before I could ask another question, he added:
“Mom, I think she knows I found out. Because this morning, she told me that if I ever talked to you again, neither of us would be safe.””
I stared at Mr. Haines.
He was already reaching for his phone.
And for the first time, I wasn't thinking about the house or the money.
I was thinking about the man who had loved me for forty-two years.
May you like
The man whose final letter had warned me about Brooke.
And the possibility that his death had never been what we believed.
