Chapter 10: The Child My Mother Hid

"Who is this child?""

My father's voice was barely recognizable.

He held the photograph with both hands, staring at the newborn wrapped in a white blanket. My mother was sitting in a hospital bed, smiling down at the baby.

She looked exhausted.

But happy.

And the man standing beside her wasn't my father.

It was Daniel.

Grandma Pearl sank into the nearest chair.

"Oh, Elizabeth.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Daniel, is that your baby?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he took the picture from my father and studied the handwriting on the back.

"Where did you find this?""

"Inside the metal case," I answered.

He looked at the date.

Then his face changed.

"Marcus, sit down.""

My father didn't move.

"Answer me.""

Daniel placed the photograph on the coffee table.

"Elizabeth gave birth to a child.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"When?""

"About eighteen months before she died.""

My father shook his head.

"That's impossible. We were married. We were living together.""

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Elizabeth didn't give birth to your child.""

The room fell silent.

I stared at my father.

His face had become almost colorless.

Then I looked at Daniel.

"Are you saying Mom had another baby with someone else?""

"No," Daniel replied quickly.

"I'm saying she had a child whose identity had to be protected.""

Grandma Pearl began crying.

"Her name was Sophie.""

I turned toward her.

"You knew?""

Grandma nodded.

"I helped your mother through the pregnancy.""

I felt as though the floor had disappeared.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because Richard was looking for the baby.""

Daniel opened the metal case again.

He removed the bankbook and a folded birth certificate.

The child's name was Sophie Elizabeth Whitmore.

The father's name was listed as Daniel Whitmore.

I stared at the paper.

"But Daniel is Mom's brother.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's why the name is confusing. Sophie was legally registered under my surname for protection. I am her biological father.""

My father stepped backward.

"You're telling me my wife had a child with her own brother?""

Daniel looked horrified.

"No. Elizabeth and I were never involved that way. The birth certificate was deliberately falsified.""

He placed another document on the table.

It was an adoption record.

The biological father was listed as an unidentified donor.

The biological mother was Elizabeth Reed.

The legal guardian was Daniel Whitmore.

I looked at Grandma.

"Why did Mom give the baby to Daniel?""

"Because Richard wanted leverage over Elizabeth," she whispered.

"He knew about the child and threatened to take her away.""

Daniel explained that Sophie had been conceived through a private donor arrangement years earlier, before my mother's health deteriorated.

My mother had always wanted another child.

But after the financial scandal began, she realized the baby would become vulnerable.

Daniel agreed to raise Sophie under his family name.

The arrangement had been temporary.

Until Richard discovered the truth.

"Where is she now?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"With a family who doesn't know the entire story.""

My father looked furious.

"You allowed my wife to have a child and hide her from me?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Elizabeth wanted to tell you. But Richard had threatened to expose your company's financial records and destroy your business. She believed you would be targeted if you knew too much.""

"That's not an answer.""

"It's the truth.""

My father turned toward Grandma.

"Did you know?""

Grandma nodded.

"I helped Elizabeth arrange everything.""

He looked devastated.

"Everyone knew except me.""

I touched his arm.

"Maybe Mom was trying to protect you.""

He shook his head.

"Or maybe she didn't trust me.""

Nobody answered.

I picked up the photograph again.

My mother looked so happy.

For the first time, I understood why she had written that the house wasn't the most important thing she had left behind.

It wasn't the money.

It wasn't the warehouse.

It was a child.

A sister I had never known existed.

"Can I meet her?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"Yes.""

"When?""

He hesitated.

"Not yet.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because Richard knows about her.""

My father slammed his hand against the table.

"How?""

Daniel removed another document from the metal case.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Richard Cole.

The date was only two weeks earlier.

The subject line read:

*THE SECOND CHILD.*

My heart began pounding.

I read the message.

I found the birth record. Elizabeth's other child is alive. If we can locate her, we can force Daniel to release the warehouse documents. Marcus still doesn't know anything.

I looked up.

"Vanessa knows where Sophie is?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not yet. But she's trying to find out.""

My father reached for his phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Before he could dial, another sound came from the hallway.

A door creaked.

We all turned.

The front door was slowly opening.

A woman stepped inside.

She was wearing a beige coat and holding a small black handbag.

Vanessa.

But she wasn't alone.

A young woman stood behind her.

She looked about twenty-two.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small silver heart necklace.

The same necklace my mother had given me when I turned twelve.

Vanessa smiled.

"Well, Marcus. Since everyone is here, I thought it was time we met the other daughter.""

The young woman looked directly at me.

Then she spoke.

"Are you Maya?""

I nodded.

She swallowed.

"I'm Sophie.""

May you like

And before I could take a step toward her, she looked at the photograph in my hand and began to cry.

"That's my mother.""
