Chapter 8: What Happened on Christmas Eve

Nobody moved.

I stared at Daniel.

"What do you mean my mother didn't die from her illness?""

Daniel looked at my father.

"Marcus, did Elizabeth ever tell you about the Christmas Eve accident?""

My father shook his head.

"She died in the hospital.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Grandma Pearl stepped closer.

"Daniel, not here.""

He looked toward the warehouse entrance.

"Then where? We've spent eleven years hiding.""

Thomas interrupted.

"We need to establish exactly what happened before making accusations.""

Daniel nodded.

He walked toward the private office.

"Then come inside.""

I followed him.

The office was behind a heavy steel door. My brass key fit into the lock, but Daniel stopped me before I turned it.

"Your mother wanted you to open this yourself.""

I looked at the key.

My fingers trembled.

Then I turned it.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small room filled with filing cabinets, cardboard boxes, and an old wooden desk.

A Christmas wreath hung on the wall.

It was dusty and faded.

But beneath it was a framed photograph of my mother.

She was smiling.

I approached the desk.

There was a small wooden box on top.

My name had been written across the lid.

*MAYA.*

I opened it.

Inside were three things.

A silver USB drive.

A folded piece of paper.

And a tiny Christmas ornament shaped like a red house.

I picked up the ornament.

It was handmade.

My mother had painted it herself.

On the back, she had written:

Home is where the truth lives.

I pressed it against my chest.

Daniel stood behind me.

"She brought that here the night she disappeared.""

I turned.

"Disappeared?""

He nodded.

"Before she was admitted to the hospital, your mother came to this warehouse. She was frightened. She told me Richard had discovered the records.""

My father looked confused.

"She went to the warehouse before she died?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Because she believed you were being watched.""

My father shook his head.

"By whom?""

"Richard's people.""

Daniel opened one of the filing cabinets.

Inside were dozens of documents arranged by date.

He removed a folder labeled DECEMBER.

Then he handed it to Thomas.

"Start with the hospital records.""

Thomas scanned the pages.

His expression changed.

"What is this?""

"Copies of Elizabeth's medical reports.""

My father stepped closer.

"Those are private.""

"They were my sister's records. She gave me permission to keep them.""

Thomas turned another page.

"There are discrepancies.""

"What kind?"" I asked.

He pointed to the medication section.

"The hospital's original chart lists one medication. But the discharge summary references a different dosage.""

My father looked confused.

"Does that mean something?""

"It means we need a medical expert to review the records. It doesn't establish wrongdoing by itself.""

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother suspected someone had altered her medication.""

I felt my legs weaken.

"Why?""

"Because she began experiencing symptoms that didn't match what her doctors expected.""

Grandma Pearl covered her mouth.

"Elizabeth told me she felt strange that Christmas Eve.""

My father looked at her.

"You knew?""

"She called me from the hospital. She said she was frightened, but she didn't want to upset you.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did she know who was responsible?""

He reached into the cabinet.

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed my mother sitting at a restaurant table.

Across from her was Richard Cole.

And standing behind him was Vanessa.

I stared.

"That's my stepmother.""

Daniel nodded.

"The photograph was taken two weeks before Elizabeth was hospitalized.""

My father took it.

"Why would Vanessa be meeting Richard?""

"Because they knew each other long before she married you.""

My father shook his head.

"No.""

Daniel placed another document on the desk.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Richard Cole.

The recipient was Vanessa.

The date was six months before my mother's death.

The subject line read:

*THE HOUSE AND THE GIRL.*

I felt sick.

My father read the first paragraph aloud.

"Once Elizabeth is out of the picture, Marcus will be easier to manage. Keep him focused on the business. The daughter must not learn about the trust.""

He stopped.

His voice had broken.

I couldn't breathe.

The email continued.

Vanessa had been instructed to establish a relationship with my father and gain access to the property.

The final sentence read:

Do not touch the warehouse until I give you the signal.

My father lowered the paper.

"She married me because of the house?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he opened another folder.

"This is why Elizabeth hid the documents here.""

Inside were copies of bank transfers, property records, and photographs.

One photograph showed Richard standing outside my mother's hospital.

Another showed Vanessa entering through a side entrance.

The date was Christmas Eve.

I stared at it.

"She visited Mom that night?""

Daniel nodded.

"According to the hospital visitor log, she was there for twenty-seven minutes.""

My father looked devastated.

"Vanessa told me she was visiting her sister.""

Grandma Pearl began to cry.

Daniel opened the USB drive.

"There is something else.""

Thomas looked at him.

"What?""

"A recording.""

Daniel connected the drive to an old laptop.

A file appeared on the screen.

*ELIZABETH_FINAL_MESSAGE.mp4*

My heart pounded.

Daniel clicked play.

My mother's face appeared.

She looked pale and tired.

But she was smiling.

"Hello, my beautiful girl.""

I covered my mouth.

It was her voice.

The same gentle voice I remembered from childhood.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, Maya, then I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.""

My eyes filled.

My mother continued.

"I need you to listen carefully. Your father is not responsible for everything that happened. He made mistakes, but he doesn't know the whole truth.""

My father leaned toward the screen.

Elizabeth took a breath.

"There's a reason I chose Pearl to protect the house. And there's a reason I never told Marcus about the second account.""

Daniel suddenly froze.

"What second account?"" Thomas asked.

He leaned closer to the screen.

My mother continued.

"Richard believes the money is gone. But it isn't. I moved it before he could reach it.""

Daniel whispered something.

"What?""

He looked at the screen.

"Elizabeth, what did you do?""

My mother seemed to hear him.

She leaned forward.

Then she said the words that made Daniel step backward.

"The money is in the account under the name of the person I trust most.""

The recording ended.

I looked at my father.

He looked at Grandma.

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas noticed something on the laptop.

A second file had appeared.

It was labeled:

*VANESSA_CONFESSION.*

Daniel stared at it.

"Elizabeth never showed me that.""

I reached for the mouse.

But before I could click, the warehouse lights went out.

A crash sounded behind us.

May you like

Then the office door slammed shut.

Someone had locked us inside.
