Chapter 5 - VANESSA SAID SHE LOVED ME

Vanessa requested supervised statement meeting.
Dad refused for me.
Mom said decision eventually should include Lily, but seven too young.
Correct.
So adults met without me.
Years later I read transcript.
Vanessa said:
“I loved Lily.”
Detective asked:
“Then why frame her?”
“I thought I could control how far it went.”
There.
She planned necklace found.
I cry.
Then Vanessa “discovers” later maybe pretends I confessed? She expected Dad to discipline, not police.
But she locked me because I kept denying.
Anger escalated.
Then she would open door after twenty minutes and “forgive.”
Create narrative.
Instead emergency watch reached Dad.
That watch mattered.
Then:
“Did you want guardianship?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Money was part.”
“What else?”
“I wanted to be her mother.”
That was perhaps worse emotionally.
She believed legal control could make emotional role real.
“I thought if Emma stayed gone long enough, Lily would stop remembering.”
At seven, I remembered.
That frustrated her.
She had hidden photos.
Stopped stories.
Then necklace incident was also punishment for me wearing Mom’s old bracelet? Maybe not add.
Then she said:
“When Lily kept asking about Emma, I felt like I was failing.”
As replacement.
Instead of accepting she wasn't replacement.
Then:
“Did you hate Emma?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel loved her even after divorce.”
There.
Dad had kept one photo.
Mentioned.
Vanessa competed with absent woman.
Then financial motive and love motive fused.
If Emma remained gone:
Vanessa had husband.
Potential guardianship influence.
Protected stolen money.
If Emma returned:
Everything threatened.
So she chose lies.
Then court case.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to fraud, forgery, obstruction-related offenses? Significant. She cooperated against Martin and Northbridge actors.
She also faced child endangerment/false imprisonment for bathroom? Brief locking likely misdemeanor. We can say separate child-welfare finding and no unsupervised contact, not overstate.
Sentence included custody/probation/restitution.
Martin longer due larger scheme.
Richard discipline.
Northbridge settled victim claims.
Mom recovered majority trust funds over years.
No magical full restoration overnight.
Then Dad and Vanessa divorced.
If their marriage potentially invalid due fraudulent prior divorce, legally court resolves. Simpler: their marriage valid because prior divorce final; later ends by divorce.
Dad did not ask me whether he should.
Good.
Adult decision.
Then Dad and Mom remained separate.
For a year.
Maybe later dating.
No pressure.
I split time mostly Dad, more Mom gradually.
Therapist.
I had nightmares bathroom door.
Dad replaced exterior lock with interior privacy lock impossible to lock from outside.
Small.
Important.
He told me:
“No one locks you in again.”
Then I said:
“What if I lock myself in?”
He smiled.
“That’s privacy.”
Difference.
Then camera system updated.
But not surveillance everywhere.
Safety.
Then emergency watch stayed.
I tested too often.
Dad answered every time first month.
Eventually laughed.
“Lily, this is fourth emergency about cookies.”
I said serious.
“Cookie jar empty.”
He said:
“Valid.”
Normalcy.
Then my seventh birthday? Already incident maybe around same day? No.
At eighth birthday, Mom came.
Dad too.
Separate.
We had small party.
Vanessa not.
I wore pink hair clip Mom saved.
Then Mom gave me passport copy? No, odd.
She gave photo album.
Pictures Vanessa had hidden.
Me as baby.
Mom.
Dad.
No erasing.
Dad looked.
Cried.
Then I asked:
“Are you going to get married again?”
Both nearly choked.
“No plans.”
Good.
Children want restoration simple.
Adults know better.
Then Dad eventually asked Mom to coffee.
Not because history.
May you like
Because they still cared.
Slow.
