Chapter 7: The Safe Nobody Was Supposed to Open

“Derrick, whatever you do, don't let Monica access your office safe.””

Derrick gripped his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.

On the other end of the call, his former business partner, Raymond Ellis, sounded breathless, as if he had been running.

“Raymond, slow down,” Derrick said.

“What are you talking about?””

“I'm talking about the safe in your home office. The one you installed after we dissolved the partnership.””

Derrick glanced toward the hallway.

His home office was at the back of the house, beyond the kitchen. Inside stood his desk, a filing cabinet, and a heavy steel safe bolted into the wall behind a framed photograph of his late mother.

Monica knew the combination.

She had known it for years.

Derrick had given it to her because he trusted his wife.

“What does Monica have to do with my safe?”” he asked.

Raymond exhaled sharply.

“Because three weeks ago, somebody contacted me asking for copies of the original authorization documents from our old company.””

“Who?””

“Someone claiming to represent you.””

“I didn't authorize anyone.””

“I know that now.””

Derrick stared at Monica.

She had gone completely motionless beside the staircase.

Raymond continued.

“The person knew your old business identification number, your former mailing address, and details about an account we closed years ago. They even knew which documents were stored in your home office.””

Derrick's stomach tightened.

“Did you give them anything?””

“No. I asked them to verify their identity. They refused. Then they mentioned a company called Carter Family Services.””

Derrick looked at the papers scattered across the console table.

“Raymond, I need you to tell me exactly what happened.””

“I received an email with a scanned authorization form bearing your signature. It looked legitimate at first, but the signature was copied from an older document. Whoever sent it was trying to obtain records connected to our dissolved partnership.””

“Why would anyone want those?””

“Because one of the old accounts had a reserve balance when we closed it. There was also a dispute over who had authority to transfer the remaining funds.””

Derrick felt the room tilt around him.

“How much money?””

“Forty-eight thousand dollars.””

Nia, standing close enough to hear, covered her mouth.

Monica looked toward the front door.

Derrick noticed.

“Raymond, was that money ever transferred?””

“Not by me. The account was supposed to remain frozen until both former partners approved the final distribution. But when I checked last week, I discovered someone had submitted a request to update the authorization details.””

“Who submitted it?””

“I couldn't establish that. The bank flagged the request, and the transfer never went through.””

Derrick closed his eyes briefly.

Another account.

Another unauthorized document.

Another attempt to use his identity.

“Send me everything you have,” he said.

“I already emailed the records to your business address. But Derrick, there's something else.””

“What?””

“The original account application was signed before your wedding. Monica was listed as the person who delivered the paperwork.””

Derrick stared at his wife.

She shook her head vigorously.

“Raymond is lying,” she said.

Derrick held up a hand.

“Not now.””

Raymond lowered his voice.

“The application was never supposed to give her access to your personal finances. It was an administrative file for the partnership. If somebody used it to establish a separate authorization profile, that would need to be investigated.””

Derrick felt a chill settle over him.

“Thank you,” he said.

“Don't contact anyone else about this until I call you back.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, the foyer remained silent.

Then Monica spoke.

“You're letting people who barely know our family destroy our marriage.””

Derrick looked at her.

“Raymond has known me for seventeen years.””

“He was never happy about our relationship.””

“He just told me someone tried to access records from my old business.””

“And you believe him?””

“I believe the documents deserve an explanation.””

Monica shook her head.

“You've changed, Derrick.””

He almost laughed.

Six years earlier, she had praised him for being careful with money. She had admired his discipline, his long working hours, and his habit of protecting the family from financial uncertainty.

Now she was angry because he had begun asking questions.

“I'm going to the office,” he said.

Monica stepped in front of him.

“No.””

Derrick stopped.

“Move.””

“You're not going to start opening safes and accusing me of things you don't understand.””

“It's my office.””

“Our house!””

“My office, Monica.””

She reached for his wrist.

“Please. Just listen to me.””

He gently pulled away.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to help Marcus. He was in trouble. He needed money, and I thought I could manage everything without upsetting you.””

“By selling Nia's car?””

“I thought I could replace it later.””

“By charging nearly a hundred thousand dollars to my account?””

“I intended to explain.””

“When?””

She couldn't answer.

Nia stepped forward.

“Did you plan to give me my money back?””

Monica looked at her stepdaughter.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

“Before or after you bought Kayla the SUV?””

Monica's mouth tightened.

“You don't understand the pressure I've been under.””

Nia's voice trembled.

“You keep talking about your pressure as if it gives you permission to hurt everyone else.””

Kayla stood at the foot of the stairs, crying silently.

“Mom,” she whispered, “please tell them what happened.””

Monica turned sharply.

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

The word surprised Monica.

Kayla wiped her face.

“I signed those papers because I trusted you. I thought you were doing something nice for me. You told me Dad knew about the purchase.””

“I said he would understand.””

“You told me he had approved it!””

Monica looked away.

Kayla shook her head.

“You made me think this was a gift.””

“It was a gift.””

“With Dad's money?””

Monica slapped her palm against the console table.

“I did everything for you!””

Kayla flinched.

Then she whispered, “I never asked you to steal anything.””

The accusation hung in the air.

Monica's face twisted with anger.

Derrick used the moment to walk toward his office.

She followed him.

“Derrick, stop!””

He reached the door and turned.

“Are you going to tell me what's in the safe, or do I have to find out myself?””

Monica's silence answered him.

He entered the office.

Sunlight spilled across the wooden desk. His mother's photograph remained in its usual place on the wall.

Derrick moved the frame aside.

The steel safe sat behind it.

He entered the combination.

The lock clicked.

Inside were property records, insurance documents, an old business ledger, and a small velvet box containing his father's watch.

Derrick pulled out the documents one at a time.

At first, everything looked untouched.

Then he noticed a manila folder wedged behind the ledger.

He had never seen it before.

The label read:

*D. CARTER — ORIGINAL ACCOUNT RECORDS*

He opened it.

The first page contained an application dated four months before his wedding.

His full legal name appeared at the top.

Beneath it was an authorization allowing a second party to request certain financial records.

The second party's name had been blacked out on the copy.

But the handwritten initials beside the signature line were unmistakable.

M.H.

Monica Hayes.

Derrick turned toward the doorway.

His wife stood there, pale and trembling.

“Why were these hidden in my safe?””

Monica took one step backward.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the folder, then at Derrick.

Finally, she whispered, “I didn't know it would go this far.””

Derrick's heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Monica's eyes filled with tears.

“It started before we were married. I only wanted to make sure I would never be left with nothing.””

Derrick stared at her.

“You opened an account in my name because you were afraid I would leave you?””

“No! I didn't open it for myself. I was protecting my future.””

“Using my identity?””

She shook her head.

“I never meant to hurt you.””

Derrick looked down at the paperwork again.

There was a second signature on the final page.

A witness.

He recognized the name immediately.

Raymond Ellis.

But the signature was dated two weeks after Raymond had supposedly left the company.

Derrick slowly raised his eyes.

“Monica, Raymond says he never authorized this.””

Her face crumpled.

Before she could answer, Derrick's phone buzzed.

A message from Raymond appeared.

*I just found the original application. The copy in your safe has a missing page. The original lists the second authorized party.*

A second message followed.

*Derrick, the name isn't Monica's. It's Marcus Carter.*

Derrick looked at his wife.

Then toward the hallway, where his daughter and stepdaughter were waiting.

The safe had not been opened to reveal Monica's secret.

May you like

It had revealed his brother's.

And suddenly, Derrick understood that the woman standing before him might not have been the only person planning to use his money.
