Chapter 8: The Brother's Signature
Derrick read Raymond's message again.
The name Marcus Carter seemed to burn against the screen.
His younger brother had known about the old account.
He had borrowed the exact amount taken from Nia's car.
He had known Monica was handling money.
And now his name appeared on an authorization document hidden in Derrick's safe.
Derrick looked at Monica.
“Did you put Marcus's name on this account?””
She covered her face.
“Please, Derrick.””
“Answer me.””
“Yes.””
The single word landed with brutal finality.
Derrick lowered the phone.
“You gave my brother access to my financial records?””
“It wasn't supposed to be access to your money.””
“Then why was he listed as an authorized party?””
Monica wiped her cheeks.
“Because Marcus told me it was the only way to establish the account properly.””
Derrick stared at her.
“Marcus told you?””
“He said he understood the paperwork. He said he had done this kind of thing before.””
“You trusted my brother to set up a financial arrangement in my name without telling me?””
“I trusted him to help me protect myself.””
Derrick took a slow breath.
“Protect yourself from what?””
Monica looked at the floor.
“From losing everything.””
The words were barely audible.
Derrick stepped away from the safe.
“You have a home. You have a car. You have access to household funds. What exactly did you think you were going to lose?””
“Everything you built existed before me!”” she burst out.
“The house, the investments, the business. You had a whole life before we met, and I was always afraid that one day you'd decide I didn't belong in it.””
Derrick stared at her.
“So you decided to make sure you had access to my accounts.””
“I thought it was insurance.””
“Against your own husband?””
Monica shook her head desperately.
“You don't understand what it feels like to marry someone who already has everything. I wanted security. I wanted to know I wouldn't be helpless if something happened.””
“You could have talked to me.””
“And what if you said no?””
“Then it would have been my decision!””
His voice echoed through the office.
Monica flinched.
For a moment, Derrick saw the woman he had married: the one who had sat beside him on the porch after their wedding, promising that honesty would always matter more than pride.
He had believed her.
Now he wasn't sure which parts of their life together had been real.
He held up the application.
“Did you know Marcus was listed as the second authorized party?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know he could use the arrangement to request records?””
“He said he would never do anything without my permission.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Monica lowered her eyes.
“I knew he could request certain records.””
Derrick felt sick.
“And did you know he had access to the documents in my safe?””
“No.””
“Did you give him the combination?””
“No.””
Derrick searched her face.
She appeared frightened, but fear was no longer enough to convince him.
He placed the papers on the desk.
“I'm calling Marcus again.””
Monica grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
Derrick looked at her hand.
She released him.
“Why shouldn't I?””
“Because he will lie to you.””
“Then I'll listen to his lies and compare them with yours.””
He dialed.
This time, Marcus answered immediately.
“Derrick, listen. Before you say anything, I can explain the account.””
Derrick glanced at Monica.
“Good. Explain it.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Monica asked me to help her establish financial security before the wedding. She was afraid you might change your mind.””
“So you created an authorization arrangement in my name.””
“I didn't create the account. I helped with the paperwork.””
“Did I authorize you?””
“No.””
“Did I know you were listed?””
Marcus went quiet.
Derrick closed his eyes.
“Did you know?””
“Not at first.””
“Not at first?””
Marcus sighed.
“I found out when Raymond contacted me about the old partnership records.””
Derrick's expression hardened.
“When was that?””
“Years ago.””
“How many years?””
“Derrick, it wasn't a big deal back then.””
“How many?””
“Five.””
Five years.
The account had existed for five years, and Marcus had known about it for most of that time.
Derrick looked at Monica.
She was crying now, but he couldn't tell whether she was ashamed or simply afraid of what would happen next.
“Did you use the account to access my records?”” Derrick asked.
“Only a few times.””
“Which records?””
“Business information. Account statements. Things Monica needed.””
“What did she need them for?””
“Household planning.””
Derrick let out a bitter laugh.
“Household planning?””
“Look, I never took your money.””
“What about the forty-eight thousand dollars from our old partnership?””
“That money wasn't transferred.””
“Did you try to transfer it?””
“No!””
“Raymond says somebody submitted an authorization request.””
Marcus's breathing grew uneven.
“That wasn't me.””
“Then who?””
“I don't know.””
“Did Monica ask you to do it?””
“No.””
Derrick waited.
Then Marcus said, “She told me she was trying to arrange something for Kayla. She said you would approve it once you understood.””
Derrick looked at his wife.
“What arrangement?””
Monica shook her head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Derrick ignored her.
“Marcus, what arrangement?””
“I don't know all the details. She said the dealership had a way to process the purchase, and the money would be settled afterward.””
“Settled with what?””
“I thought she had savings.””
“You knew she sold Nia's car.””
Marcus fell silent.
Derrick's voice rose.
“You knew!””
“She told me she'd already spoken to Nia!””
Nia appeared in the doorway.
“That's a lie!””
Marcus heard her voice.
“Oh, God.””
Nia stepped into the office.
“Uncle Marcus, you took my money?””
“I didn't know it was yours.””
“You knew it came from my car!””
“I thought your father had approved the sale.””
“He didn't!””
“I know that now.””
Nia stared at the phone, tears streaming down her face.
“You could have called me. You could have asked me. You could have done anything except take the money and pretend it was yours.””
Marcus sounded ashamed.
“Nia, I'm sorry.””
“Sorry doesn't give me my car back.””
“No, it doesn't.””
“Then stop saying it like it's supposed to fix something.””
Derrick took the phone from her.
“Marcus, listen carefully. You are going to preserve every document, every message, and every transaction record connected to this arrangement. Do not delete anything.
Do not move any money. And do not contact Nia about this without her permission.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Okay.””
“I'm also contacting the bank and an attorney. They will determine what happened and what needs to be done next.””
“Derrick, please. Don't turn this into a criminal matter.””
“You don't get to decide how serious it is.””
“I made mistakes, but I'm your brother.””
“And Nia is my daughter.””
The line went silent.
Derrick continued.
“You had a chance to be honest with me this morning. Instead, you asked me for more money while hiding what you'd already taken.””
“I was going to pay it back.””
“With what?””
Marcus had no answer.
Derrick ended the call.
For a moment, he stood motionless beside the desk.
Nia wrapped her arms around herself.
Monica whispered, “I never wanted her to get hurt.””
Derrick turned toward her.
“Then why did you keep going?””
She shook her head.
“I thought I could fix it before anyone found out.””
“By hiding it?””
“By paying everyone back.””
“With whose money?””
Monica looked at the floor.
Derrick's voice softened, but only slightly.
“Did you use the account to access anything else?””
“No.””
“Did you authorize any other purchases?””
“No.””
“Did you submit the dealership documents?””
Monica didn't answer.
Derrick stepped closer.
“Monica.””
She finally looked up.
“I submitted the documents.””
Nia's breath caught.
“Why?””
“Because I thought the bank would approve the purchase, and I could make the payments before Derrick noticed.””
Derrick stared at her.
“You used an authorization profile you had no right to use.””
“I thought I could manage it.””
“You sold Nia's car, diverted the proceeds, and charged my account for an SUV you couldn't afford.””
Monica began to cry harder.
“I was trying to give Kayla something good.””
Kayla stood in the doorway, her pink sleeves bunched in her fists.
“I don't want it,” she whispered.
Monica turned toward her.
“Kayla—”
“I don't want a car that came from hurting Nia.””
Monica reached for her daughter, but Kayla stepped back.
Derrick looked at the paperwork one final time.
The signatures. The authorization profile. The transaction records.
Every page revealed another decision someone had made without his knowledge.
He picked up his phone to contact the bank.
Before he could dial, an incoming email appeared from Raymond.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: ORIGINAL ACCOUNT RECORDS — ADDITIONAL BENEFICIARY DISCOVERED*
Derrick opened it.
The attached document listed three authorized parties.
His own name.
Marcus Carter's name.
And a third name that made his blood run cold.
His late mother's.
Beneath her name was a date recorded two months after her funeral.
Derrick slowly raised his eyes.
“Monica,” he whispered, “my mother died seven years ago.””
Monica stopped crying.
Derrick turned the screen toward her.
“Then explain how someone used her identity to authorize this account two months after she was buried.””
For the first time, Monica looked less frightened than shocked.
“I didn't put her name on that.””
Derrick stared at her.
And he believed one thing she had said all afternoon.
She might not have.
May you like
Because whoever had created the original arrangement had access to information that neither Derrick nor Monica should have possessed.
And that person had been operating inside his family for years.
