Chapter 5: The Woman Who Rewrote My Story
I couldn’t stop staring at Caroline’s name.
It was printed at the bottom of the document like a signature on a confession.
*Requested by: Caroline Hart.*
My stepmother.
The woman who had packed my lunch when I was sick.
The woman who had helped me practice my graduation speech.
The woman who had stood in the kitchen two nights ago and smiled while asking if I was excited for my big day.
All those memories suddenly felt different.
Like every kind word had a shadow behind it.
My dad was still holding my phone.
His fingers were trembling.
“I don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“You knew she was involved.””
“No.””
“You said you suspected.””
“I suspected something happened. I never knew she changed anything.””
“But her name is right there.””
He stared at the screen.
“I need to find out what this is.””
I almost laughed.
“You need to find out?””
My voice rose.
“I’m the person whose entire life is written on that paper.””
My dad looked hurt.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
“You know the question. I’m the one who has to live with it.””
The room went quiet.
Brielle looked between us.
For once, she didn’t seem angry.
She looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
The apology surprised me.
Not because I believed everything was fixed.
But because it was the first honest thing she had said all morning.
“You knew.””
Her eyes lowered.
“Not everything.””
“You knew your mom was hiding something.””
“Yes.””
“And you still helped her destroy my dress.””
She swallowed.
“I thought it was just about graduation.””
I stared at her.
“How could you think ruining someone’s graduation was okay?””
She didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
My dad walked toward the window.
His phone was in his hand.
He looked like he was fighting with himself.
Then he pressed a number.
“Who are you calling?”” I asked.
“Caroline.””
“She won’t answer.””
His eyes met mine.
“Then I’ll keep calling.””
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then the call connected.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
My father put it on speaker.
“Where are you?””
Caroline’s breathing was the only sound.
Then:
“You found it.””
My stomach tightened.
My dad closed his eyes.
“You knew.””
A pause.
“I knew you would eventually.””
My hands clenched.
How could she sound so calm?
Like we were discussing a forgotten bill.
“Why?”” my dad asked.
“Because I was trying to protect this family.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“Protect us?””
Caroline heard me.
A moment of silence followed.
Then she said:
“Lily.””
My name sounded strange coming from her.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I said.
“I don’t.””
My voice shook.
“Because apparently everyone has been deciding my life without asking me.””
“Lily—”
“Why did you change my birth records?””
The silence that followed was different.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
My dad looked at me.
He heard it too.
She didn’t ask what I meant.
She didn’t deny it.
She knew exactly what I was talking about.
“I wanted to talk to you in person.””
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“Not anymore.””
Caroline sighed.
“I knew this day would come.””
“Then why did you do it?””
Another silence.
Then she said:
“Because your mother was going to leave.””
My dad froze.
“What?””
Caroline continued.
“Your mother found out the truth.””
“What truth?”” I asked.
Her voice became softer.
“The truth about your biological father.””
The room went still.
My dad gripped the phone.
“Don’t.””
But Caroline ignored him.
“Lily deserves to know.””
I felt sick.
“Then tell me.””
My dad looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I turned toward him.
“For once, I want someone to stop protecting me.””
He looked away.
Caroline spoke again.
“Your mother had a secret.””
“What secret?””
“She knew you might not be your father’s biological child.””
I closed my eyes.
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew there was a possibility.
Hearing them said out loud made them real.
“But you knew?””
Caroline didn’t answer.
“Did you know before I was born?””
“Yes.””
My father whispered:
“How?””
Caroline’s voice changed.
For the first time, she sounded emotional.
“Because Elena told me.””
My mother’s name.
Hearing it from Caroline felt wrong.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“She was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That she had made a mistake.””
My dad turned away.
I could see the pain on his face.
“But why would she tell you?””
Caroline answered quietly.
“Because she trusted me.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Clearly she trusted the wrong person.””
Silence.
Then Caroline said something I never expected.
“She did.””
Everyone froze.
My dad looked at the phone.
“What did you say?””
“I said she trusted the wrong person.””
My heart started racing.
“Caroline…”
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My dad’s voice hardened.
“You destroyed documents.””
“I was scared.””
“You manipulated Brielle.””
“I was trying to stop Lily from finding out the truth the wrong way.””
I stared.
“The wrong way?””
“Yes.””
“Then what’s the right way?””
No answer.
I felt tears building.
“You ruined my graduation.””
“I know.””
“You made Brielle attack me.””
“I never told her to destroy the dress.””
“But you told her to stop me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
My dad went silent.
I couldn’t believe she admitted it.
“You wanted me to miss graduation.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Caroline’s voice became barely a whisper.
“Because someone was coming.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“Someone who knows the truth.””
My dad frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“I received a message last night.””
“From who?””
Caroline didn’t answer.
“Caroline.””
Her voice trembled.
“He found her.””
My stomach dropped.
“Found who?””
The line went silent.
Then Caroline said:
“Lily’s biological father.””
Nobody moved.
My entire body went cold.
My biological father.
A person I had never known.
A person who might have spent years wondering where I was.
A person who was somehow connected to all of this.
My dad stepped forward.
“Where is he?””
Caroline didn’t answer.
“Where is he?””
This time, his voice was louder.
Finally, she whispered:
“He’s at the graduation ceremony.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
Caroline continued:
“He said he wanted to see his daughter walk across the stage.””
I looked at my graduation gown hanging in the closet.
The ceremony.
The stage.
The day someone tried to take away from me.
Because someone knew.
Someone knew I was about to be surrounded by people.
Someone knew I was about to have a moment where the truth could come out.
My dad grabbed his jacket.
“We’re leaving.””
I looked at him.
“Where?””
“To the ceremony.””
“But why?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because nobody is taking that moment from you.””
For the first time that day, I believed him.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, not from an unknown number.
A name appeared.
One I had never seen before.
*Ethan Vale.*
The message was short.
But it changed everything.
*I’m sorry I couldn’t find you sooner, Lily.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then the second message appeared.
*I’ve been looking for my daughter for eighteen years.*
