Chapter 7: The Letter My Mother Left Behind
I looked at the envelope in my hands.
It was just paper.
A simple, worn-out envelope with my name written across the front.
But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Because inside were words from someone I had spent my entire life missing.
My mother.
The person whose voice I barely remembered.
The person whose face I knew mostly through photographs.
The person everyone kept using to explain secrets I didn’t understand.
My dad stood beside me.
Ethan stood across from me.
And for the first time in my life, I realized both of them were afraid of what my mother had written.
Not because they didn’t know the truth.
Because they did.
They knew there was something inside that letter that could change everything.
“I need to read it,” I said.
My dad looked at me.
“Lily—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need to.””
He looked down.
Then slowly nodded.
“You’re right.””
I walked away from the entrance of the ceremony hall.
The noise of hundreds of families preparing for graduation followed me.
Laughter.
Camera flashes.
People calling names.
Everyone was celebrating endings and beginnings.
And I was standing in the corner holding the story of my entire life.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one folded piece of paper.
The handwriting was delicate.
Careful.
The kind of handwriting someone uses when every word matters.
My hands trembled as I began to read.
*My dearest Lily,*
*If you are reading this, then something happened that I was afraid would happen.*
I stopped.
My breath caught.
She knew.
She knew this moment might come.
I continued.
*I wish I could be there to explain everything myself. I wish I could hold your hand and tell you that none of this was your fault.*
My eyes burned.
*Before you were born, I made mistakes. Your father made mistakes. Other people made mistakes. But you were never a mistake.*
I swallowed.
The words blurred.
*You were the best thing that ever happened to me.*
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had wondered whether my mother loved me.
Not because anyone told me she didn’t.
But because she was gone.
And absence creates questions.
I kept reading.
*There is something you need to know about Daniel and Ethan.*
My heart tightened.
*Both of them loved you.*
I looked up.
My dad was watching me from a distance.
His expression was broken.
*Daniel became your father because he chose to. Ethan loved you because he believed you were his.*
I looked toward Ethan.
He looked away.
*But Caroline saw you differently.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
*She believed blood was the only thing that mattered. She believed love could be replaced by proof.*
I felt anger rising.
Because suddenly, everything made sense.
The obsession.
The documents.
The secrets.
*Caroline was my closest friend. I trusted her. That was my biggest mistake.*
I stopped reading for a moment.
My mother’s words hurt more than I expected.
Because betrayal from strangers hurts.
But betrayal from someone you love changes how you see the world.
I continued.
*When I discovered Caroline had been secretly collecting information about your birth, I confronted her.*
*She told me she was protecting Daniel.*
*But I knew the truth. She wasn’t protecting him.*
*She was protecting herself.*
I looked up.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
I didn’t answer.
Not because I wanted to hide it.
Because I needed one more second to process.
I kept reading.
*Caroline knew Ethan was your biological father.*
My heart stopped.
There it was.
The answer.
The question everyone had been avoiding.
*But she also knew Daniel was your father in every way that mattered.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
*When Daniel found out there was a possibility he wasn’t your biological father, he stayed. He loved you before he knew the truth. He loved you after.*
I looked at my dad.
He wiped his face quickly.
Like he didn’t want me to see.
But I did.
*That is why I never wanted a test to define you.*
My hands shook.
Then I reached the final part.
And the words changed.
The handwriting became messier.
Like she had written them while crying.
*Lily, if Caroline is the one who gives you this letter, be careful.*
My heart dropped.
*If Caroline controls the truth, she controls the story.*
*She has always believed that if she could prove something about your birth, she could erase the love that raised you.*
I stopped.
Then I read the last sentence.
And it changed everything.
*But there is one thing Caroline does not know.*
I leaned closer.
*Your father kept the original DNA results.*
I froze.
My dad’s head lifted.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What original DNA results?””
His face went pale.
“Lily…”
“You knew?””
He stepped closer.
“No. I didn’t know about that.””
“But she said you kept them.””
“I don’t have them.””
Ethan suddenly spoke.
“She does.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Ethan looked serious.
“Caroline.””
My dad stared.
“How would she have them?””
“Because she took everything from Elena.””
My dad’s expression changed.
The same realization crossed his face.
“The box.””
I frowned.
“What box?””
My dad looked at me.
“When your mother died, there were personal items that disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought they were lost.””
Ethan shook his head.
“They weren’t.””
The air became heavy.
“Where are they?””
Ethan looked toward the parking lot.
“I think Caroline has them.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
My dad immediately said:
“Don’t answer.””
But I did.
Because I was tired of being afraid.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Caroline’s voice came through.
“Lily.””
My entire body went still.
“Where are you?””
“I need you to listen.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“I’ve listened enough.””
“Please.””
The desperation in her voice surprised me.
“I know what you found.””
“You mean the truth?””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
“Why did you do it?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
I looked at my dad.
“Your family?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“Your forgiveness.””
I didn’t expect that.
“What?””
Caroline’s voice cracked.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
“Wrong?””
I almost laughed.
“You destroyed my graduation.””
“I know.””
“You used Brielle.””
“I know.””
“You lied to my dad for years.””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
“Then why?””
Caroline took a shaky breath.
“Because if you knew the truth, I thought you would hate me.””
I frowned.
“You thought hiding it would make me love you?””
“No.””
Her voice became quiet.
“I thought hiding it would give me more time to fix what I did.””
I looked at the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I’m leaving.””
My dad immediately stepped forward.
“Leaving where?””
Caroline ignored him.
“Lily, there is something else you need to know.””
“What?””
“The person who contacted you…”
My grip tightened.
“Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“What about him?””
“He isn’t the only person who knows the truth.””
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
Caroline was silent.
Then she said:
“There is someone else coming to the graduation.””
I looked around.
Students were beginning to line up.
The ceremony was minutes away.
“Who?””
Her voice dropped.
“The person who changed the DNA results.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who?””
A long pause.
Then Caroline whispered:
“Your mother.””
I stopped breathing.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know what you think.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“My mother is dead.””
Another pause.
Then Caroline said the words that made the entire world stop.
“I thought so too.””
The call ended.
And behind me, the graduation doors opened.
Everyone began walking inside.
But I couldn’t move.
Because somewhere in the crowd…
May you like
Someone who was supposed to be gone…
might be waiting for me.
