Chapter 11: The Woman My Father Trusted

I looked from the photograph to Vanessa's name on the back.

Then I turned toward her.

"Why is there a picture of you in my father's private office?""

Vanessa looked genuinely confused.

"I've never seen that photograph before.""

I removed it from the wall.

It was dated seven years earlier.

My father stood beside Vanessa outside the Mercer Street warehouse. He was holding a folder, while she wore a blue university sweatshirt and carried a stack of papers.

"Did you know my father?"" I asked.

She nodded slowly.

"Yes. But not the way you're thinking.""

"Then explain.""

Vanessa sat down.

"When I was twenty-two, I worked as an intern for Carter Development. Your father gave me a chance when nobody else would.""

I stared at her.

"You worked for my father?""

"For eight months.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Marcus never knew.""

She looked toward the photograph.

"Your father was investigating suspicious financial transactions. He asked me to organize some old records. I found several invoices that didn't match the company's actual projects.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Did you report them?""

"Yes. To Robert.""

She paused.

"He told me to make copies and keep them somewhere safe.""

I looked at the desk.

"Is that what the original trust documents were?""

"Some of them.""

Vanessa opened her phone and showed me an old photograph.

It was a scanned page containing a list of property transfers.

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

But the date was wrong.

"This was one of the documents I found," she explained.

"The transfer was dated after your father had already instructed the company to freeze all property transactions.""

Daniel examined the image.

"This supports the evidence we found at the bank.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Robert suspected Richard had someone inside the legal department changing records. He wanted to protect the Mercer Street property because it was the only asset he had deliberately kept separate from the company.""

I looked at the note.

"The person who saved the original trust...""

Vanessa shook her head.

"It wasn't me.""

"Then who?""

She looked at my mother.

Patricia had been standing near the doorway, silently studying the photograph.

My mother lowered her eyes.

"It was your grandmother.""

I turned.

"Grandma Eleanor?""

She nodded.

"My mother-in-law discovered what Richard was doing. She had been a bookkeeper before she retired. She noticed that the figures in the company accounts didn't match.""

I remembered my grandmother.

She had died when I was seventeen.

She was small, sharp-tongued, and always carried peppermints in her handbag.

She had once told me that the most dangerous people were those who believed they were too clever to be caught.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She tried," my mother whispered.

"When?""

"At your father's funeral. She wanted to speak with you, but Richard convinced me that she was confused and grieving.""

I felt another wave of anger.

"Everyone kept deciding what I was allowed to know.""

My mother nodded.

"I know.""

Vanessa opened the wooden box again.

Beneath the cassette recorder was a small metal compartment.

Daniel noticed it first.

"There's something underneath.""

He pressed a hidden latch.

A narrow drawer slid open.

Inside was a sealed envelope, a USB drive, and a small silver locket.

I picked up the envelope.

It was addressed to my grandmother.

For Eleanor, who knows the truth.

I looked at my mother.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

I opened it.

The letter was short.

Eleanor, I have transferred the original trust records into your care. Do not allow Patricia, Richard, or Marcus to access them. If Nia is ever in danger, give her the key to the second office.

I looked up.

"The second office?""

Vanessa glanced around the room.

"There isn't another office here.""

Daniel examined the wall.

"Perhaps there is.""

He walked toward the photographs.

Behind the picture of my father and Vanessa was a narrow outline in the wooden paneling.

He pressed against it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small safe.

I looked at the silver key in my hand.

There was a second key attached to the locket.

I tried it.

The safe opened.

Inside was a thick envelope containing the original trust documents, a property deed, and several pages of bank statements.

But the most important item was a photograph.

My father stood beside my grandmother.

Between them was a little girl.

I stared at her.

It was me.

I couldn't have been older than five.

My father had written something on the back.

The reason I fought.

I swallowed.

There was another document beneath it.

A certificate of ownership.

The Mercer Street property had been placed into an irrevocable trust years before my father died.

My name was listed as the sole beneficiary.

But there was something else.

A separate account had been established to fund the community center my father had planned.

Its balance was listed on the final statement.

*$1,250,000.*

I stared at the number.

"Where did this money come from?""

Daniel examined the statement.

"Your father's personal investment account. It appears he transferred the funds before the company began experiencing financial difficulties.""

My mother looked surprised.

"He never told me.""

I turned toward her.

"Maybe he knew you would tell Richard.""

She flinched.

I immediately regretted the words.

But I couldn't take them back.

Daniel picked up the USB drive.

"This may contain the original transaction records.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"There's another possibility.""

"What?""

"Robert may have recorded more than the meeting.""

Daniel connected the drive to his laptop.

Several folders appeared.

One was labeled TRUST.

Another was labeled FINANCIAL RECORDS.

The final folder contained only one word.

*CONFESSION.*

Daniel opened it.

A video file appeared.

The date was six years earlier.

My father was sitting behind his desk, looking directly into the camera.

His face was tired.

His eyes were red.

But his voice was steady.

"If you're watching this, then the truth has finally reached my daughter.""

I moved closer to the screen.

My father's expression softened.

"Nia, sweetheart. I hope you never have to see this.""

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

He continued.

"I know your mother has made mistakes. I know Richard has manipulated people around me. But there is one person I need you to understand.""

He paused.

"Marcus is not the person who started this.""

I looked toward the man standing behind us.

Marcus had followed us to the warehouse.

He had been silent throughout the investigation.

Now he moved closer to the laptop.

My father continued.

"Marcus was involved, but he was also being threatened. Richard used his own son to keep control of the company.""

The video flickered.

Then my father leaned toward the camera.

"However, there is another person who helped Richard from the beginning. Someone who knew exactly how to make every document appear legitimate.""

Daniel's face changed.

My father spoke the name.

And I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

"Daniel Price.""

The video stopped.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then he slowly closed his laptop.

I turned toward him.

"Is that true?""

He looked at me.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"Yes.""

My mother gasped.

Vanessa stepped backward.

I felt my hands go cold.

Daniel continued.

"I helped Richard create the first fraudulent transfer documents. I thought I could control the situation. I believed the money would eventually be returned.""

I stared at him.

"And you let my father die?""

"No.""

"Then why didn't you call the police?""

He lowered his head.

"Because I knew my own name would be in the records.""

The confession hung in the air.

Then he said something even worse.

"There's another part of your father's video.""

He reopened the laptop.

"The file was split into two sections.""

He clicked the second recording.

My father appeared again.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

A woman was sitting across from him.

My mother.

She looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And said:

"Robert, if anything happens to you, I'll make sure Nia never finds out what we did.""
