Chapter 3: The Marriage He Needed
The church no longer felt like a church.
It felt like a courtroom.
My wedding flowers were scattered across the altar. The guests sat frozen in their pews, watching a ceremony that had become something none of us could have imagined.
I held the trust agreement in both hands.
"Daniel," I said, "explain this to me.""
He adjusted his glasses.
"The trust was established by your father. It contains ownership rights to the Mercer Street property and several associated commercial assets.""
"How much are those assets worth?""
Daniel hesitated.
Marcus answered instead.
"About eight million dollars.""
The number landed between us.
Eight million.
My father had left me eight million dollars, and for six years, I had believed he had left me nothing but an old watch and a collection of photographs.
"Why didn't I know about this?"" I asked.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Your father instructed the original trustee to keep the arrangement confidential until you reached thirty.""
I was twenty-nine.
"Then why was the transfer scheduled for today?""
Daniel glanced at Marcus.
"Because the trust contains a provision allowing certain administrative changes after marriage, provided the beneficiary signs the accompanying marital acknowledgment.""
I looked at the paperwork.
There it was.
A document I had never seen before.
My supposed consent to transfer control of the trust to a management company.
The management company was Reed Holdings.
I looked at Marcus.
"Did you plan to take control of my inheritance?""
He shook his head.
"That's not what this is.""
"Then tell me what it is.""
He stepped closer, lowering his voice.
"Your father left behind complicated financial obligations. My family spent years cleaning up that mess. We invested money.
We took risks. The property is worth what it is today because of us.""
"Did you buy it?""
He said nothing.
"Did you pay for it?""
Still nothing.
I looked at Daniel.
"Was the property legally transferred?""
Daniel opened his folder.
"The transfer is disputed. The trust's original ownership records indicate that it should never have been transferred without authorization from an independent trustee.""
"Then why is Marcus listed as the owner?""
"Because the company filed documents claiming that you had authorized the transaction.""
I looked at my signature again.
It was there.
My name.
My handwriting.
My trust.
My future.
All apparently signed away while I believed I was helping Marcus organize paperwork.
Brielle stepped beside me.
"Nia, we need to leave.""
I barely heard her.
I was looking at Marcus's mother.
Evelyn had been standing near the first pew, gripping her expensive handbag.
She had stopped shouting.
She was watching Daniel with an expression that suggested she already knew what was coming.
I turned toward her.
"Did you know?""
She lifted her chin.
"Know what?""
"That your son was trying to take my father's property?""
Evelyn sighed.
"Your father was a difficult man. He made promises he couldn't keep.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
She looked at Marcus.
Then she said, "Your father should have accepted the agreement when it was offered.""
My breath caught.
"What agreement?""
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"The one that would have prevented all this.""
Marcus immediately turned toward her.
"Mom, stop talking.""
But she was already angry enough to ignore him.
"Robert Carter knew the company was in trouble. He knew we were willing to help. Instead, he decided to turn everything into a personal battle.""
"My father refused to give you his business?""
"He refused to be reasonable.""
I stared at her.
"Did you know he had a trust?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
And that was the moment I understood.
This wasn't a secret Marcus had kept from his family.
It was a family secret.
Daniel cleared his throat.
"Nia, there's another document I need to show you.""
He removed a printed email from the folder.
The sender was Marcus.
The recipient was Evelyn.
The date was two weeks before our wedding.
I read the message.
Once the ceremony is completed, the marital acknowledgment becomes effective. She won't question it because she'll think it's another inheritance document. After that, the property can be consolidated under Reed Holdings.
I stopped breathing.
There was another line.
Vanessa is becoming a problem. I'll handle her before Nia starts asking questions.
I looked up.
Vanessa was crying quietly near the church doors.
Marcus lunged toward Daniel.
"Give me that!""
Daniel stepped back.
"Don't touch me.""
"You're my attorney!""
"I was your attorney," Daniel replied.
Marcus looked stunned.
Daniel placed another document on the altar.
"This is my formal withdrawal from your representation. I've also preserved the correspondence and transaction records.""
Marcus's face turned red.
"You can't do this.""
"I can, and I have.""
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Marcus turned toward me.
His expression changed completely.
The anger disappeared.
The charming man returned.
The man who used to bring me coffee in bed.
The man who kissed my forehead before work.
"Nia," he whispered, "please. We can talk about this privately.""
I looked at him.
"Privately?""
"Yes. Without all these people watching.""
"You had four years to talk to me privately.""
"I made mistakes.""
"You made plans.""
He reached for my hands.
I stepped backward.
"Don't touch me.""
His voice cracked.
"I love you.""
I stared at him.
"Which part of me?""
He looked confused.
"What?""
"The woman who trusted you? The woman who inherited eight million dollars? Or the woman whose signature you needed on a piece of paper?""
He had no answer.
Vanessa finally approached us.
"There's something else," she said.
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Please, Vanessa.""
She looked at me.
"The woman in those photographs wasn't the only person he was seeing.""
My stomach tightened.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa opened her phone.
She showed me a photograph.
Marcus was sitting at a restaurant with another woman.
This time, she was older, wearing a cream-colored suit.
Her hand rested on his arm.
I recognized her.
It was my cousin, Lauren.
The same Lauren who had helped me choose my wedding dress.
The same Lauren who had stood beside my mother during the engagement party and cried when Marcus proposed.
I looked at the date.
Six months earlier.
"How long?"" I whispered.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. But I saw them together more than once.""
Marcus stepped toward her.
"You're making things up because you're angry!""
Vanessa held up another photograph.
"Then explain this one.""
It showed Marcus handing Lauren a document outside a law office.
A document with the Carter Development logo.
My cousin had been involved.
I felt something inside me go completely still.
"Why was Lauren helping you?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
"Because she was supposed to become the second trustee of your father's estate if you refused to marry him.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"Your father had named someone else as a backup trustee. Lauren knew about the arrangement. Marcus convinced her that if she helped him get control of the property, he would make sure she received a portion of the money.""
I felt sick.
My own cousin.
My maid of honor's closest friend.
The woman who had helped me pin the veil to my hair that morning.
I turned toward Brielle.
"Where is Lauren?""
Brielle looked toward the rear pews.
"She was here a minute ago.""
I followed her gaze.
An empty seat.
Lauren's handbag was gone.
So was her coat.
"Did she leave?"" I asked.
Brielle nodded slowly.
"I saw her walk out when Daniel started reading the emails.""
My hands began shaking again.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
There was a photograph of my father standing outside the Mercer Street warehouse, smiling with one arm around a little girl.
Me.
I had never seen the photograph before.
Beneath it was a message.
*YOUR FATHER DIDN'T DIE KNOWING WHO BETRAYED HIM. BUT I DO. ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE SIGNED THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
I looked up at the first pew.
My mother was staring at me.
Her face had gone completely white.
"Mom?""
She slowly stood.
I held up my phone.
"Did you sign an agreement with Marcus's family?""
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered five words that changed everything.
"Your father begged me not to.""
I stared at her.
"What did you do, Mom?""
She reached into her handbag.
May you like
And pulled out a second envelope.
It was addressed to Marcus.
