Chapter 13: The Sister Who Betrayed Us

I played the recording a third time.

The woman's voice was unmistakable.

Isabel.

My younger sister.

The same woman my father had trusted to protect Leo's inheritance. The same woman who had spent the last two days comforting our mother and promising to keep our family safe.

I looked at Richard.

“Tell me that's not her.””

He didn't answer.

Daniel took my phone and replayed the recording.

“It's definitely a woman's voice,” he said.

“But we shouldn't identify anyone based on a short recording without verification.””

I shook my head.

“I know my sister's voice.””

My phone rang.

Isabel.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“At home. Why?””

“Is Mom there?””

“Yes. She's in the kitchen.””

“Put her on the phone.””

A brief silence followed.

“Mateo, what's happening?””

“Just put Mom on.””

I heard footsteps.

Then my mother's voice.

“Mateo?””

“Mom, is Isabel with you?””

“Yes. She's helping me prepare dinner. Why?””

“Don't let her leave the house.””

My mother became confused.

“What are you talking about?””

I looked at Daniel.

He motioned for me to remain calm.

“Mom, I need you to trust me. Keep Leo with you. Lock the doors. Don't let anyone inside.””

I heard my sister in the background.

“What's wrong with Mateo?””

Then the phone disconnected.

I immediately called again.

No answer.

Daniel was already speaking to the investigator.

Within minutes, the police confirmed that officers were being sent to my mother's house.

Richard paced across the conference room.

“Isabel wouldn't do this.””

I turned toward him.

“You said the same thing about Sofia.””

He stopped.

I regretted the words immediately, but I couldn't take them back.

Daniel looked at the recording again.

“There's something interesting about this.””

“What?””

“The woman doesn't appear to be speaking directly to Thomas. Listen to the background.””

He increased the volume.

There was a faint mechanical sound.

Then a second voice, barely audible.

A man said something about a delivery.

Daniel replayed it.

“That's not a normal telephone conversation. It sounds like someone recorded a meeting.””

I frowned.

“Are you saying someone recorded Isabel and Thomas together?””

“Possibly.””

My phone rang again.

This time, it was my mother.

“Mateo, come home immediately.””

“What's happened?””

“Isabel has disappeared.””

My heart dropped.

“Where's Leo?””

“With me. He's safe.””

“Did Isabel leave?””

“She said she needed to get something from her car. She never came back.””

I stood.

“Don't go outside. The police are coming.””

Then my mother whispered something.

“She left her handbag.””

“What?””

“It's on the kitchen table. And there's a letter inside with your father's handwriting.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Don't touch it,” he instructed.

“Wait for the officers.””

We returned home as quickly as possible.

Two police officers were already outside when we arrived.

My mother was sitting on the sofa with Leo beside her.

He rushed toward me.

“Dad!””

I held him tightly.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

“Where's Aunt Isabel?””

I looked toward my mother.

“She had to go somewhere.””

Leo frowned.

“She said she was going to bring Grandpa's old photographs.””

My stomach tightened.

The officers had secured the handbag.

One of them showed Daniel a photograph of the letter.

The envelope was addressed to me.

I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.

Daniel asked the officer to document everything before opening it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Mateo, if Isabel ever disappears, don't assume she has betrayed you. She may be the only person left who knows where the original evidence is.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at the officer.

“Can we search the house for anything else?””

He nodded.

My mother suddenly stood.

“Wait.””

She walked toward the kitchen.

“Your father gave Isabel something shortly before he died. I remember because she came home crying.””

“What did he give her?””

“A little silver necklace.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“He told her never to take it off unless she was certain the family was safe.””

Daniel looked at the photograph of the letter.

“Does Isabel still wear it?””

My mother nodded.

“Every day.””

I remembered the recording.

The faint mechanical sound.

The background voice.

And the necklace.

I suddenly had an idea.

“Could that necklace contain something?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It's possible, but we shouldn't speculate.””

My mother shook her head.

“Your father was very particular about that necklace. He told Isabel it was the most important thing he had ever given her.””

I remembered Isabel wearing it at the funeral.

I remembered her touching it whenever someone mentioned Dad.

I looked toward the empty hallway.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

Stop looking for me. I know what you're thinking, but you have the wrong person.

A second message followed.

Check the necklace.

I stared at the screen.

“It's Isabel.””

Daniel asked me to show him.

He immediately contacted the investigator and requested that the message be preserved.

Then another message arrived.

The recording you heard was made by me. Thomas doesn't know I kept the original.

My heart started racing.

I typed back.

Where are you?

The reply came almost immediately.

Somewhere Thomas cannot find me.

Then:

I have the evidence your father died trying to protect.

I looked at Richard.

“She's not working with Thomas.””

Richard exhaled.

“Then what is she doing?””

Before I could answer, another message appeared.

Meet me at the old church. Come alone. And bring the original trust agreement.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She might be in danger.””

“Which is exactly why you shouldn't go alone.””

He contacted the investigator and arranged a controlled meeting.

My mother held my arm.

“Please bring her home.””

I nodded.

At the church, the officers waited nearby while Daniel and I entered through the side entrance.

The building was almost empty.

Sunlight fell through the stained-glass windows, illuminating the wooden pews.

Then I heard a familiar voice.

“Mateo.””

Isabel stepped out from behind the altar.

Her face was pale.

Her hair was disheveled.

But she was alive.

I rushed toward her.

“What the hell is going on?””

She began crying.

“I'm sorry.””

I grabbed her shoulders.

“Thomas's voice was in the recording. Yours was too. What did you do?””

“I was pretending to help him.””

“Why?””

She reached beneath her blouse and removed the silver necklace.

The pendant was slightly heavier than I remembered.

She opened it.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

I stared.

“What's that?””

“Everything Dad collected before he died.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Isabel, we need to preserve that.””

She nodded.

Then she looked directly at me.

“Mateo, Thomas didn't just want the company. He wanted to destroy the trust completely.””

“Why?””

“Because Dad discovered the company had been used to finance something much bigger.””

She handed Daniel the memory card.

“What?””

Isabel swallowed.

“Thomas was using stolen company money to purchase distressed properties through shell companies. He then resold them at inflated prices, moving the profits through several accounts.””

I shook my head.

“How does that involve Dad's death?””

She looked at me.

“Because Dad discovered the payments to Dr. Miller.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“And you knew?””

“Not at first. Dad asked me to help him collect evidence. He told me not to tell anyone, including you.””

“Why me?””

“Because he was afraid Thomas would target your family.””

I thought about Leo.

“Did you know about the threat against him?””

She nodded.

“Thomas found out I had the evidence. He threatened to hurt Leo if I didn't help him locate the original documents.””

My anger began to fade.

“That's why you disappeared?””

“Yes. I needed him to believe I was cooperating.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I recorded him discussing the payments to Dr. Miller. I also recorded him admitting that he had arranged the removal of Dad's original company records.””

Daniel examined the memory card.

“Is there more?””

Isabel nodded.

“There's a video.””

She looked at me.

“Mateo, Dad recorded his final conversation with Thomas. I found it hidden in the necklace.””

My breath caught.

“Play it.””

Daniel connected the memory card to a secure device.

A video appeared.

My father was sitting in his office.

Thomas stood across from him.

The date was visible.

Three days before my father's death.

Dad looked exhausted.

Thomas placed a folder on the desk.

“You sign the transfer, and nobody gets hurt,” Thomas said.

My father shook his head.

“I'm not giving you my company.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Then you'll lose everything.””

My father looked directly at him.

“You've already lost your soul.””

Thomas picked up the folder.

“Then don't blame me for what happens next.””

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

Then Isabel whispered:

“There's another recording.””

Daniel opened the second file.

This time, the video showed Thomas speaking to someone outside the hospital.

The camera angle was poor.

But the other person turned toward the light.

I recognized him.

Richard.

My father's closest business associate.

The man who had helped us uncover everything.

I slowly turned toward the doorway.

May you like

Richard was standing there.

And he was smiling.
