Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Nobody moved.

Richard looked at the screen.

Then he looked at me.

“Mateo, I can explain.””

I stepped between him and Isabel.

“You were working with Thomas?””

He shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

Daniel immediately moved toward the door.

“Stay where you are, Richard.””

Richard raised both hands.

“Listen to me. You don't understand what you're looking at.””

Isabel stepped backward.

“You told Thomas where Dad was being treated.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“I was trying to protect the company.””

I stared at him.

“By helping someone interfere with my father's medical treatment?””

He shook his head.

“I never intended for your father to die.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

Richard swallowed.

“I knew Thomas was planning something. I thought he wanted your father frightened enough to sign the transfer.””

“And Dr. Miller?””

“I introduced them.””

Daniel's voice became cold.

“Why?””

Richard looked down.

“Thomas had information about the company. He told me my own position would be destroyed if the investigation continued.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you sold Dad out.””

“No.””

“You gave Thomas access to the hospital!””

“I thought it was a temporary arrangement!””

Isabel began crying.

“You watched him die.””

Richard turned toward her.

“I was trying to stop it.””

“Then why did you lie to us for four years?””

He had no answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Richard, I need you to understand that this conversation is being recorded.””

Richard looked toward the entrance.

Two officers appeared.

“Mr. Richard Hale,” one said, “we need you to accompany us.””

Richard didn't resist.

But before they took him away, he turned toward me.

“Mateo, your father wasn't innocent either.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He had been preparing to report the company to the authorities. He knew certain transactions had been approved under his own signature.””

“That doesn't justify what you did.””

“I didn't say it did.””

Richard looked exhausted.

“Your father discovered that Thomas had been using company money to fund private investments. But he had approved some of the early transfers himself. He thought they were legitimate.””

I shook my head.

“So?””

“So Thomas had copies of those approvals. He was using them to blackmail your father.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That information can be examined during the investigation.””

The officers escorted Richard outside.

I stood in the church, struggling to process what had happened.

My father's trusted friend had betrayed him.

My wife had helped Thomas.

And my sister had been hiding evidence for years.

Isabel touched my arm.

“Mateo?””

I looked at her.

“I'm sorry I didn't tell you.””

I took a breath.

“Why didn't Dad tell me about Richard?””

“Because he wasn't sure who he could trust.””

She opened the necklace again.

“There is something else.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Isabel removed a tiny folded paper hidden behind the memory card.

It contained a password.

She explained that Dad had stored the complete evidence archive in an encrypted account.

The recordings were only part of it.

“The password is written here,” she said.

Daniel examined the note.

“Where is the account?””

“On a secure company server. Dad created it with Margaret's help.””

We contacted Margaret immediately.

She confirmed that the account still existed.

Within an hour, she had arranged access through the proper legal process.

The archive contained hundreds of documents.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Property agreements.

Internal company communications.

And one final video.

My father was alone in his office.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Mateo, if you're watching this, I hope you never had to see the things I've discovered.””

He paused.

“I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people. I allowed business to become more important than the people who mattered most.””

His eyes filled.

“I should have told you everything sooner.””

I couldn't stop staring.

He continued.

“Thomas believes money gives him control over people. Richard believes loyalty can be purchased. And someone else believes fear is enough to keep a family silent.””

My father leaned closer.

“But I want you to understand something. The company was never the most important thing I built.””

He smiled sadly.

“It was the family.””

The video ended.

I lowered my head.

For the first time since discovering the documents, I cried.

Not because of the company.

Not because of the money.

Because my father had known he might never come home.

And he had still found a way to speak to me.

Daniel gave me a moment.

Then Margaret called.

“Mateo, I've reviewed the archive.””

“What did you find?””

“Enough to establish the financial scheme. There are also records showing that Thomas used multiple accounts to move company funds.””

“Can we recover the money?””

“Some of it. But the authorities will need to trace the transactions.””

“And the trust?””

“It's protected. Your mother's ownership rights are secure, and Leo's inheritance remains intact.””

I closed my eyes.

At least something had survived.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

“There is one final matter.””

“What?””

“Your father created a separate fund for the victims of Thomas's property scheme.””

I frowned.

“What victims?””

“Families who had purchased properties through companies controlled by Thomas. Some were sold homes with undisclosed structural problems. Others lost their deposits when projects were abandoned.””

I looked at Daniel.

“How much?””

“Approximately $2.4 million was set aside.””

I was stunned.

“Dad never told me.””

“He wanted the money used to compensate those families if the fraud was ever exposed.””

I thought about the man my father had been.

Even when he was fighting to protect his own family, he had been thinking about strangers who might lose everything.

I looked at Isabel.

“That's why he kept fighting.””

She nodded.

“He didn't want Thomas to hurt anyone else.””

Later that evening, I returned home.

My mother was waiting by the door.

She embraced me before I could say anything.

“Did you find your sister?””

I nodded.

“She was helping Dad.””

Mom closed her eyes.

“Thank God.””

Leo came running from the living room.

“Dad!””

I lifted him into my arms.

“Hey, buddy.””

“Did you find Grandpa's secret?””

I smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

“Was it treasure?””

I looked at my mother.

Then at Isabel.

“In a way.””

He frowned.

“Was it gold?””

“No.””

I kissed his forehead.

“It was the truth.””

Sofia was sitting alone at the dining table.

She stood when she saw me.

“Mateo, can we talk?””

I put Leo down beside Isabel.

Then I faced my wife.

“What is there left to say?””

She held out a document.

“Thomas sent me this.””

I looked at it.

It was a copy of a bank transfer.

A payment of $250,000 had been made to an account in Sofia's name.

The date was two days after my father's death.

I stared at her.

“You told me you received thirty thousand.””

“I lied.””

“How much did you receive?””

“Two hundred and fifty thousand.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where is the money?””

“It's gone.””

“Gone where?””

She began crying.

“I paid off debts. Thomas told me it was my share of the company.””

I looked at the transfer details.

The account had been closed.

But the transaction contained a reference.

*FINAL MEDICAL ARRANGEMENT.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Sofia shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I handed the document to Daniel.

He studied it carefully.

“This is important.””

“Why?””

“Because the payment was made after your father's death, but it references a medical arrangement.””

Sofia covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mrs. Reyes, did Thomas ever tell you why he paid you this money?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then she whispered something.

“He told me it was the price of keeping quiet.””

The room went silent.

My mother gripped the back of a chair.

I stared at Sofia.

“You knew there was something to keep quiet about.””

She nodded.

I felt the last remaining part of my trust disappear.

“Then this marriage is over.””

She began crying.

“Mateo, please.””

“I won't stop you from having legal representation. I won't use Leo against you. But I will not pretend we can return to the life we had.””

She reached toward me.

I stepped back.

“I'm sorry.””

I looked at her.

“So am I.””

That night, Daniel received another call.

Thomas Bennett had been located.

He had been attempting to leave the country using a false identity.

The police had intercepted him at a private airport.

But there was one final problem.

He had refused to speak.

Until he learned that Richard had been arrested.

Then he requested one thing.

May you like

He wanted to meet me.

Alone.
