Chapter 8: The Marriage Was Never an Accident
I didn't sleep.
Vanessa returned to the bedroom, but I stayed in the office.
At six in the morning, I took Lily to breakfast before school.
She ordered pancakes and orange juice.
I watched her cut the pancakes into tiny squares, exactly as she had done since she was little.
For a moment, I wanted to pretend everything was normal.
Then my phone vibrated.
Daniel had sent me the address of Ethan Cole's office.
I dropped Lily at school and drove there.
Ethan worked in a modest office above a small accounting firm.
He was older than he appeared in the photograph. His hair had turned gray around the temples, but the scar beneath his left eye was unmistakable.
When I introduced myself, he stared at me.
Then he closed the office door.
"Robert's son.""
I nodded.
"You knew my father.""
"Very well.""
"Did you know my wife?""
Ethan looked toward the window.
"Unfortunately.""
He invited me to sit.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he opened a filing cabinet and removed a thick folder.
"I've kept these documents for years because I knew someone would eventually come looking.""
He placed them on the desk.
"Your father discovered that Patricia was diverting money from a business account. He asked me to investigate.""
"How much?""
"Initially, around sixty thousand dollars. But the amount grew as I examined the records.""
I opened the folder.
There were bank statements, invoices, and correspondence.
Several transactions had been routed through companies connected to Patricia.
Then I saw Vanessa's name.
"She was involved?""
Ethan nodded.
"Patricia introduced her to your father. At first, Vanessa presented herself as someone who could help manage his personal affairs.""
"Why?""
"Because Patricia knew your father was considering changing the structure of his estate.""
I looked up.
"What did he intend to change?""
"Your father wanted to establish a protected trust for Lily. He was worried that someone might try to access her inheritance after his death.""
I stared at him.
"Did he know Vanessa and I would get married?""
Ethan gave me a tired look.
"He suspected she was interested in you.""
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"He tried.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Ethan opened another folder.
Inside was a printed email addressed to me.
The date was four months before my father's death.
The subject line read:
*Marcus, Please Be Careful About Vanessa.*
I felt a chill.
"I never received this.""
Ethan pointed to the bottom.
"Your father sent it to your old work email. It bounced back. He later told me he planned to speak to you personally.""
"Why didn't he?""
"He became ill. Very quickly.""
I stared at the email.
My father had tried to warn me.
And I had never known.
Ethan continued.
"After Robert died, Patricia became more aggressive. She wanted the trust funds moved into an account she could control. I refused to help.""
"Then what happened?""
"She accused me of mishandling company funds. I lost my position. A few months later, I discovered someone had submitted a forged transfer document using my credentials.""
"Did you report it?""
"Yes. But the investigation stalled because the original documents disappeared.""
I looked at the papers.
"Do you have copies?""
"Everything I could save.""
I turned another page.
There was a handwritten note from my father.
If Patricia gains control of the trust, Lily loses her protection.
I looked at Ethan.
"Why didn't you contact me after all this happened?""
He lowered his eyes.
"I tried. Your number had changed. I sent a letter to your house, but it was returned.""
"Vanessa?""
"I can't prove she intercepted it.""
I sat back.
For three years, I had lived with a woman who apparently knew more about my father's financial affairs than I did.
I had trusted her with my daughter.
With my home.
With my father's legacy.
And she had used that trust against us.
"There's something else," Ethan said.
He removed a small envelope.
"Your father gave me this shortly before he died.""
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten statement.
If anything happens to me before I can complete the transfer, make sure Marcus understands that the original trust agreement must be located. The copy currently held by Patricia is incomplete.
I looked up.
"What does that mean?""
Ethan leaned forward.
"The trust was designed with a second layer of protection. Your father created a separate document naming an independent successor trustee.""
"Who?""
"Someone who wasn't part of the family.""
"Where is that document?""
"I don't know. Robert told me he had placed it somewhere safe.""
I frowned.
"Did he mention a location?""
Ethan nodded.
"His old office. He said the document was inside a locked cabinet behind the original property records.""
I photographed the statement and called Daniel.
He listened carefully.
Then he said, "Marcus, don't retrieve anything until we establish legal authority and confirm the location.""
"Understood.""
When I left Ethan's office, I felt as though I had stepped out of a different life.
The woman I had married might have been planning to access my father's estate long before she became my wife.
But I still had one question.
Why had she waited three years to take the money?
The answer came when I returned home.
Vanessa was standing in the living room.
Two suitcases were beside her.
Patricia was helping her pack.
"What are you doing?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
"I'm leaving.""
"Where's Lily?""
"At school.""
"You're not taking her anywhere.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Don't worry. I don't want to take your precious daughter.""
The cruelty in her voice made me step forward.
"Then where are you going?""
"Somewhere I can think.""
I noticed a stack of papers on the coffee table.
A printed copy of our marriage certificate.
My father's probate documents.
And an application for a new bank account.
I picked up the last sheet.
It was a request to transfer funds from Vanessa's personal account to a new institution.
The date was yesterday.
"You were planning to move the money.""
She snatched the paper away.
"That money is mine.""
"Not if it came from Lily's trust.""
Patricia stepped between us.
"Marcus, let her leave.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Before you go, answer one question.""
She crossed her arms.
"What?""
"Did you ever love me?""
For a moment, she looked almost human.
Then her expression hardened.
"Love doesn't pay debts, Marcus.""
I felt something inside me collapse.
"So that was your answer.""
She picked up her handbag.
Patricia lifted one suitcase.
At the door, Vanessa turned.
"You're going to regret making an enemy of me.""
I said nothing.
She left.
An hour later, Daniel called.
"We've located the original successor-trustee document.""
"Where?""
"Your father's attorney kept a sealed copy.""
I exhaled.
"Who was named?""
Daniel paused.
"That's the unusual part.""
"Tell me.""
"Your father appointed someone who has been legally authorized to take control of Lily's trust if financial misconduct was ever discovered.""
"Who?""
Daniel's answer stunned me.
"Your late father's younger sister, Margaret.""
I frowned.
"My aunt Margaret?""
"Yes. And she's already contacted our office.""
"Why?""
May you like
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Because she says your father gave her evidence that Vanessa and Patricia were planning to remove Lily from the inheritance entirely.""
