Chapter 9: The Aunt Who Had Been Watching
I hadn't seen my aunt Margaret in almost six years.
She had attended my father's funeral, hugged me, and left before the reception ended.
At the time, I thought grief had overwhelmed her.
Now I wondered whether she had known something I didn't.
Daniel arranged a meeting at his office for the following afternoon.
When I arrived, Margaret was already waiting.
She was seventy-two, with short silver hair and a walking cane she rarely needed. Her eyes were sharp, and her expression was serious.
The moment she saw me, she stood.
"Marcus.""
I hugged her.
She held me longer than I expected.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"For what?""
"For not telling you sooner.""
We sat down.
Daniel placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"Margaret has agreed to provide the original trust documents and the correspondence she received from Robert.""
My aunt nodded.
"Your father knew something was wrong before he died.""
I leaned forward.
"How much did he know?""
"Enough to be frightened.""
She opened her handbag and removed a small leather notebook.
"He started keeping records after he discovered Patricia had accessed one of his business accounts without permission.""
I looked at the notebook.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he didn't want you confronting her before he understood how far the situation had spread.""
"But he could have warned me about Vanessa.""
Margaret looked down.
"He tried.""
I thought about Ethan's email.
"Did he tell you he suspected Vanessa was interested in me because of the inheritance?""
Margaret nodded.
"He was worried from the beginning.""
I stared at her.
"Then why didn't you say anything at the wedding?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because I didn't have proof. Your father made me promise not to accuse anyone without evidence. He was afraid Patricia would destroy the records.""
I leaned back.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then Margaret opened the notebook.
There were dates, account numbers, and short handwritten notes.
One entry caught my attention.
*March 18 — Patricia confirms Vanessa has access to Marcus's household finances.*
Another:
*April 6 — Attempt to obtain copies of Robert's original trust documents. Refused.*
Then a third:
*May 12 — Vanessa asked whether the trust could be changed after marriage.*
I looked up.
"She asked that?""
Margaret nodded.
"Your father told me about the conversation. Vanessa claimed she wanted to understand how blended families handled inheritances.""
I felt sick.
My wedding had taken place three weeks after that entry.
I remembered Vanessa's beautiful white dress.
Her smile.
The speech she gave about building a family together.
Had any of it been real?
Margaret continued.
"Robert made a decision after that. He created a separate legal instruction appointing me as successor trustee if the primary trustees acted against Lily's interests.""
Daniel placed the document in front of me.
It was genuine.
The signatures had been verified.
The notary was alive at the time of signing.
And the terms were clear.
If financial misconduct was established, Margaret could assume control of the remaining trust assets and initiate recovery proceedings.
I looked at her.
"Can you do that now?""
"Yes," she said.
"And I intend to.""
I felt relief for the first time in days.
Then Margaret placed another document on the table.
It was a letter from my father.
The handwriting was shaky.
Margaret,
I am afraid I have underestimated Patricia. She knows about the property and the trust. She believes there is more money available than there actually is.
If she continues, I fear she may involve someone else.
Please protect Lily. She is the reason I created this arrangement.
I swallowed.
"What did he mean by someone else?""
Margaret looked at Daniel.
He opened a second folder.
"We found the name of the private lender mentioned in your father's records.""
A company called Northbridge Capital.
The company had been dissolved, but its former director was still active in financial services.
I recognized the name immediately.
Ethan had mentioned him during our conversation.
Richard Sloan.
"What does he have to do with Vanessa?""
Margaret answered.
"Richard was the man who financed Patricia's first business. When Patricia got into financial trouble, your father helped her settle the debt.""
"Why?""
"Because she was his niece by marriage, and he didn't want the family destroyed.""
I frowned.
"But my father was the one who had the debt?""
Margaret shook her head.
"No. Patricia did.""
I stared at her.
"So the money in Lily's trust was used to repay Patricia's debts?""
"That's what Robert suspected.""
Daniel turned another page.
"We also found a series of communications between Patricia and a company associated with Richard Sloan. We're verifying their authenticity.""
I looked at the documents.
One transfer stood out.
$75,000.
The same amount Vanessa had attempted to wire three days earlier.
I leaned forward.
"Was that payment made before?""
Daniel nodded.
"Not from Lily's trust. From a separate account connected to Patricia.""
Margaret looked at me.
"Marcus, I need you to understand something. Your father didn't create Lily's trust simply because he wanted her to have money for school.""
"Then why?""
"Because he believed someone might eventually try to take away her inheritance.""
She touched the letter.
"He knew you would be vulnerable to someone who appeared to love you.""
I looked down.
The room seemed to tilt.
I had spent years believing I was building a second family.
Instead, someone might have been building a financial arrangement around me.
Daniel interrupted.
"There's one more issue. The court can appoint Margaret as successor trustee, but we need to identify all the remaining assets and determine whether the transfers can be recovered.""
"Do whatever is necessary.""
Margaret reached across the table.
"I will protect Lily, Marcus. I promised your father.""
I squeezed her hand.
"Thank you.""
For the first time, I felt we might actually get Lily's future back.
But when I returned home that evening, I discovered Vanessa had left something behind.
An envelope was tucked beneath the office door.
My name was written across the front.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Marcus,
You think you've discovered the truth, but you haven't.
Patricia did not create this plan. She was following instructions.
Your father knew exactly who was responsible for the original missing money.
And if you continue digging, you will find out why he spent the last six months of his life trying to keep one person away from Lily.
I read it twice.
Then I turned the page.
There was a photograph.
It showed my father sitting in a hospital room.
Beside his bed stood a man in a dark suit.
I recognized him immediately.
Richard Sloan.
But it was the handwritten caption beneath the photograph that made my blood run cold.
*The man who visited Dad the night before he died.*
I called Margaret.
She answered immediately.
"Marcus?""
"Did you know Richard Sloan visited my father in the hospital?""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her voice trembled.
"Because I thought he had gone away.""
"What do you mean?""
"Marcus, your father didn't die from the illness alone.""
I stopped breathing.
"What are you saying?""
Margaret began to cry.
"Your father told me someone had threatened him. He said if anything happened to him, I had to make sure Lily never came near that man.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Who?""
My aunt took a shaky breath.
Then she said:
"Richard Sloan is not Vanessa's business partner, Marcus.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then who is he?""
May you like
Margaret's answer changed everything.
"He's Lily's biological grandfather on her mother's side. And he has been trying to get custody of her since the day your father died.""
