Chapter 12: The Truth My Father Buried

I stared at my phone.

My mother had just told me that my father was responsible for the accident.

The same father who had raised me.

The same man who had spent years telling me how much he loved her.

The same man whose old letters were filled with apologies to a woman he claimed was dead.

I wanted to reject it.

I wanted to believe she was confused.

But the fear in her voice had sounded real.

Samuel stepped closer.

"What did she say?""

I looked at him.

"She said my father arranged the accident.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"I know.""

"Your father spent years trying to protect me. He wouldn't do that.""

I looked toward Nia.

She was crying quietly.

"Do you believe her?""

Nia hesitated.

Then she said, "Your father has never told me everything.""

That answer hurt more than I expected.

I called the nursing facility.

The administrator confirmed that my father was still missing.

Then I called the police officer handling the case.

I explained the new information and requested that the lake house be secured.

He told me to stay where I was.

But I couldn't.

Not after hearing my mother's voice.

Not after twelve years.

I drove to the lake house with Samuel and Nia.

We didn't go inside immediately.

The property was surrounded by tall trees, and the old wooden gate hung open.

I remembered spending summers there as a child.

My mother used to sit on the veranda with a book.

My father would grill dinner beside the lake.

It had been the happiest place I knew.

Now it looked abandoned.

The windows were dark.

The garden was overgrown.

And a black car was parked beside the garage.

I recognized it.

My father's car.

"Stay behind me," I told Samuel.

We approached the front door.

It was unlocked.

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.

A lamp was burning in the living room.

On the coffee table sat three cups of tea.

One was still warm.

I looked around.

"Mom?""

No answer.

Then a familiar voice came from the hallway.

"Michael.""

I turned.

My father stood at the end of the corridor.

He was wearing the same gray sweater I remembered from the photograph.

His hair was disheveled.

His face looked thinner than it had a week earlier.

But he was alive.

"Dad?""

He smiled weakly.

Then his eyes moved to Samuel.

"Sam.""

Samuel froze.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Samuel stepped forward.

"Why didn't you tell me the truth?""

My father closed his eyes.

"Because I was a coward.""

Samuel's face twisted.

"You let me believe I was abandoned.""

"I know.""

"You let me grow up thinking nobody wanted me.""

My father lowered his head.

"I know, son.""

Samuel's voice broke.

"Don't call me that.""

My father nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Michael, we need to talk.""

I approached him.

"Did you arrange the accident?""

He stared at me.

For several seconds, he didn't answer.

Then he whispered, "No.""

"Mom says you did.""

"Your mother is frightened.""

"Of you?""

"Of what happened.""

I stepped closer.

"Tell me the truth.""

My father walked toward the living room and sat down.

His hands trembled.

"Edward had been stealing from the company for years. He was using Daniel to move money. Your mother found the documents and threatened to expose him.""

"Why did she have the insurance policy?""

"Because Edward created it.""

"Why was your signature on the increase?""

My father looked at me.

"I signed it.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Edward told me it was a protection policy. He said if anything happened to your mother, you would be financially secure.""

I stared at him.

"You believed him?""

"At first.""

"And afterward?""

My father rubbed his forehead.

"I discovered the policy had been increased without your mother's knowledge. I confronted Edward.""

"What happened?""

"He told me the accident was already planned.""

My blood ran cold.

"Planned by whom?""

My father looked toward the window.

"Robert.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Robert Hayes?""

He nodded.

"Robert arranged the driver. Edward arranged the cover-up. Daniel handled the money.""

I stared at him.

"And Vanessa?""

My father looked down.

"She knew.""

I turned away.

Every person I had trusted seemed to be connected to the same nightmare.

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"I tried.""

"When?""

"After the funeral.""

My father swallowed.

"Robert showed me documents proving that if I reported anything, they would accuse me of arranging the accident myself. The insurance policy carried my signature. The company transfers carried your signature. And Edward had witnesses who would testify that I had threatened Claire.""

I stared at him.

"So you did nothing?""

"I protected you.""

"You lied to me for twelve years!""

My voice echoed through the house.

My father flinched.

"I know.""

"You let me bury someone who wasn't my mother!""

"I had no choice.""

"You always had a choice!""

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

Then he reached into his pocket and removed a small key.

"There's something underneath the floor in the old study.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"The original evidence. The documents Robert never found.""

I stared at the key.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?""

"Because I wasn't sure who was watching.""

I took the key.

"Where is Mom?""

My father looked toward the staircase.

"Upstairs.""

I started moving.

Then he grabbed my wrist.

"Michael, wait.""

I turned.

His expression had changed.

There was a strange urgency in his eyes.

"Before you see her, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"Your mother didn't survive the accident because Edward wanted her alive.""

I frowned.

"Then why?""

My father swallowed.

"Because she made a deal with him.""

"What deal?""

"She agreed to disappear and let everyone believe she was dead in exchange for your safety.""

I shook my head.

"She told me you arranged the accident.""

My father looked devastated.

"Your mother believes I betrayed her.""

"Did you?""

He stared at me.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"I gave Edward the location of the car that night.""

I stepped backward.

My father continued.

"I didn't know he intended to hurt her. I thought he wanted the documents.""

I stared at him.

"You sent him after her?""

"I was trying to stop the scandal from destroying the company.""

The words felt like a physical blow.

My father had not ordered the accident.

But he had delivered my mother into the hands of the man who caused it.

And then he had hidden the truth.

I turned toward the staircase.

A woman's voice came from upstairs.

"Michael?""

I stopped.

It was her.

My mother.

I climbed the stairs slowly.

At the top, the bedroom door was slightly open.

I pushed it.

A woman stood beside the window.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

Her face was older.

But her eyes were exactly as I remembered them.

She looked at me.

Then she whispered, "My baby.""

I couldn't move.

She took one step toward me.

I took one step back.

"Don't.""

Her face crumpled.

"Michael...""

"Why?""

She covered her mouth.

"Why didn't you come home?""

She began crying.

"I wanted to.""

"You watched me bury you.""

"I know.""

"You let me grow up thinking I had lost you.""

"I know.""

"Do you have any idea what that did to me?""

She lowered her head.

"I have thought about it every day.""

I wanted to embrace her.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask her a thousand questions.

Instead, I stood there, unable to decide whether the woman in front of me was my mother or a stranger.

Then she reached for my hand.

I let her take it.

Her fingers were cold.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"Who sent the driver?""

She closed her eyes.

"Robert.""

"Dad says Edward arranged the cover-up.""

"Your father is telling you only half the story.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

She stepped toward the bedside table and picked up a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Robert Hayes standing beside a black car.

My father stood on the other side.

Between them was a young woman.

Vanessa.

But the date on the photograph was what made my blood run cold.

It had been taken three days before my mother's accident.

I stared at my mother.

"What was Vanessa doing with them?""

My mother took a shaky breath.

"She wasn't helping Edward steal the money, Michael.""

"Then what?""

My mother looked directly into my eyes.

"She was helping Robert arrange a second accident.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"A second accident?""

My mother nodded.

"Your father wasn't the only target that night.""

Then she placed another photograph in my hand.

It showed a younger version of Daniel standing beside a hospital bed.

And lying in that bed was a woman whose face I recognized immediately.

Vanessa.

My mother whispered:

"Your wife was supposed to die that night too.""

I stared at the photograph.

Then I heard a loud crash downstairs.

A man's voice shouted.

"Nobody move!""

My mother grabbed my arm.

Her face filled with terror.

"Michael, get Samuel out of here!""

I rushed toward the doorway.

But before I could reach the stairs, my phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*Your mother has just told you the wrong story. Ask her what happened to Claire.*

I looked back at my mother.

Her face had gone completely white.

And from downstairs, someone called my name.

May you like

It was Robert Hayes.

"Michael! Get away from that woman!""
