Chapter 14: The Last Confession

The private care facility stood behind a row of tall trees, nearly an hour outside the city.

It was a quiet place.

White walls.

Wide windows.

A small garden filled with flowers.

The kind of place where families brought elderly relatives to recover from illness.

Samuel practically ran through the entrance.

Vanessa followed him.

Nia stayed beside my mother while I approached the receptionist.

"We're here to see Claire Collins.""

The receptionist checked her computer.

"Are you family?""

Samuel stepped forward.

"I'm her son.""

The woman studied his face.

Then she nodded.

"Room 214.""

Samuel didn't wait.

He hurried down the corridor.

I followed.

At the end of the hallway, he stopped outside a half-open door.

A woman was sitting beside the window.

Her hair was white.

Her shoulders were thin.

But when she turned toward us, I recognized the woman from the photograph.

Claire.

Samuel's mother.

She looked at him for several seconds.

Then her hand flew to her mouth.

"Sam?""

Samuel stood frozen.

"Mom?""

Claire began crying.

He crossed the room and fell to his knees beside her chair.

She wrapped both arms around him.

"My baby.""

Samuel buried his face against her shoulder.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

I stood in the doorway, watching a mother hold her son after twelve years of separation.

Then Claire noticed me.

Her expression changed.

"Michael?""

I nodded.

She looked at my mother standing behind me.

Then she covered her mouth.

"Oh, God.""

My mother approached.

"Claire.""

Claire reached for her hand.

"I'm sorry.""

My mother shook her head.

"We were all victims of the same people.""

Claire looked at Samuel.

Then she whispered, "Not all of us.""

I stepped closer.

"What does that mean?""

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Her expression hardened.

"You brought her?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I had to.""

Claire turned away.

"I don't want to see you.""

Samuel stood.

"Mom, please. We need answers.""

Claire looked at him.

Then she nodded.

"Sit down.""

We gathered around her.

Claire reached into the drawer beside her chair and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a memory card.

"The second recording," she said.

I looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

"That's what Daniel was talking about.""

Claire held the card tightly.

"Before I disappeared, I recorded a conversation between Richard, Robert, and Edward. They were discussing the money, the trust, and your mother's accident.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Who ordered it?""

Claire looked directly at me.

"Richard.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

She nodded sadly.

"Your father knew Robert was going to intercept the car. He gave him the location. He wanted the documents taken before your mother could expose the company.""

"But he didn't want her killed?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"He didn't think Robert would go that far.""

I looked at my mother.

She was staring at the floor.

Claire continued.

"Your father had been blackmailed. Edward had discovered financial irregularities in the company. Richard believed that if the documents became public, he would lose everything.""

I struggled to understand.

"So he gave them my mother's location?""

"Yes.""

"And Robert attacked her.""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

The father I had admired my entire life had made a decision that destroyed my family.

But Claire wasn't finished.

"There's something else.""

She placed another document on the table.

It was a copy of a hospital report.

The date was the day after my mother's accident.

The patient was listed under an unknown identity.

I looked at the name.

*Vanessa Collins.*

I turned toward my wife.

"What is this?""

Vanessa sat down.

Then she began to cry.

"I was in the second car.""

I stared at her.

"You told me you were supposed to die.""

"I was.""

She explained that Robert had arranged for her to be taken to a private hospital after the accident. She had suffered serious injuries, and Daniel had been instructed to tell everyone she had gone abroad.

But Vanessa survived.

And she eventually returned to the family.

"Why did you marry me?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"Because I fell in love with you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's your explanation?""

"I know how it sounds.""

"Did you marry me because you loved me or because you wanted access to my father's money?""

She wiped her eyes.

"Both things became tangled. I was afraid of Edward. I was afraid of Daniel. And I was afraid that if I told you the truth, you would hate me.""

I looked away.

"That didn't stop you from stealing from me.""

"I know.""

"That didn't stop you from humiliating Nia.""

"I know.""

"That didn't stop you from selling Samuel's guardianship.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I know.""

Samuel stood.

"Then why should anyone forgive you?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I don't expect forgiveness.""

Claire picked up the memory card.

"There's one final thing you need to hear.""

I looked at her.

She inserted the card into an old recorder.

A man's voice filled the room.

Richard.

My father.

"If Claire exposes the documents, Michael will lose everything. The company, the inheritance, the house. Everything.""

Another voice answered.

Robert.

"Then we take the papers.""

Richard spoke again.

"And if she refuses?""

A pause.

Then Edward's voice.

"Then nobody will believe her when she's gone.""

I felt sick.

The recording continued.

Robert asked, "And the boy?""

Richard answered.

"Samuel stays with Claire. He knows nothing.""

Then another voice entered.

Vanessa.

"Richard, this has gone too far.""

My blood ran cold.

My father responded.

"Then you should have thought about that before signing the transfer papers.""

Vanessa began crying.

The recording ended.

I stared at her.

"What transfer papers?""

She shook her head.

Claire answered instead.

"Vanessa signed the original agreement that transferred Samuel's guardianship and a portion of the trust to Edward.""

I looked at my wife.

She nodded.

"I was twenty-two. Daniel told me it was temporary.""

Samuel stepped backward.

"You sold me twice?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I was trying to get you back!""

Samuel looked at her with unbearable sadness.

"You never came.""

Then Claire reached for my hand.

"Michael, your father eventually regretted everything. He spent years trying to repair the damage.""

I looked at her.

"That doesn't change what he did.""

"No. But there's one thing you need to know.""

She handed me a sealed envelope.

"Your father gave this to me shortly before he disappeared.""

I opened it.

Inside was a letter addressed to me.

Michael,

I know you may never forgive me.

I gave Robert your mother's location. I believed I could control what happened. I was wrong.

I spent twelve years trying to make things right.

I protected Samuel's inheritance. I helped your mother disappear. I kept evidence against Edward and Robert.

But there is one thing I never managed to do.

I never found the person who ordered Robert to attack Vanessa.

I looked up.

"What?""

Claire's face changed.

She took the letter from my hand and examined the final page.

Then she whispered:

"That's impossible.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She pointed to the last paragraph.

The instruction came from someone who had access to all three families. Someone who was supposed to be dead.

I looked at Samuel.

Then Vanessa.

Then my mother.

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*Stop looking for the person who ordered the accident. You already know him.*

A second message followed.

It contained a photograph of Daniel.

He was standing outside the facility.

And behind him was a man holding a gun.

The man turned toward the camera.

I recognized his face.

Edward Collins.

But there was something else.

Daniel was holding a folder.

On its cover were the words:

*MICHAEL ANDERSON — ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORD.*

I looked at Claire.

"What's this?""

Her face went completely white.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Michael, you need to know something about your real father.""
