Chapter 3 - The Child Everyone Tried to EraseThe photograph changed everything.

Jonathan spent the entire night studying it.

The boy in the picture was Ethan.

No question.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same birthmark.

But the woman standing beside him…

Jonathan did not recognize her.

The detective looked through the file.

“Her name is Amelia Reed.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Who is she?”

The detective answered:

“That is what we are trying to find out.”

Then he placed another document down.

Jonathan read it.

And froze.

Custody Transfer Agreement.

His name was nowhere.

Instead:

Guardian:

Richard Cole.

Jonathan’s father.

Date:

Three years earlier.

Jonathan looked up.

“My father took custody of my son?”

The detective nodded.

“According to this document.”

“But I never signed this.”

“We know.”

Jonathan felt the room spin.

Someone had legally moved his child.

Without him.

Then another document appeared.

A trust agreement.

The amount:

$1.4 billion.

Beneficiary:

Ethan Michael Cole.

Jonathan finally understood.

The money.

The inheritance.

That was the reason.

Someone did not want Ethan dead.

They wanted Ethan controlled.

The next morning, Jonathan received a message.

A video file.

No sender.

He opened it.

The footage showed a hospital hallway.

Three years earlier.

His father walking.

Evelyn beside him.

And another man.

A man Jonathan recognized.

His uncle.

They were discussing Ethan.

The audio was unclear.

Then one sentence became audible.

“Once the child is gone, the trust transfers.”

Jonathan stopped the video.

His hands shook.

They did not want Ethan protected.

They wanted him removed.

That evening, Jonathan went to see Evelyn again.

This time, she was different.

Broken.

“I tried to stop them.”

Jonathan stared.

“You helped them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked down.

“Because I thought they would only take him away.”

“Where?”

“I didn’t know.”

Jonathan’s voice hardened.

“But you knew he was alive.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why did you throw him outside?”

She cried.

“Because I found the documents.”

“What documents?”

“The ones proving they planned to disappear him again.”

Jonathan froze.

“Again?”

Evelyn nodded.

“They knew someone was investigating.”

“Who?”

She looked at him.

“You.”

The final discovery came from Ethan himself.

That night, Jonathan found his son awake.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad at me?”

Jonathan’s heart broke.

“No.”

“Because Grandma said I was supposed to be gone.”

Jonathan sat beside him.

“What?”

Ethan looked down.

“She said I wasn’t the real Ethan.”

Jonathan froze.

The world stopped.

“Who told you that?”

“Grandpa.”

Jonathan felt tears forming.

His father.

The man he trusted.

The man who helped him after Claire died.

The man who supposedly protected his family.

Had spent years trying to erase his son.

Jonathan hugged Ethan.

“You are Ethan.”

The boy looked up.

“You promise?”

Jonathan held him tighter.

“I promise.”

Then his phone rang.

The detective.

“Mr. Cole.”

“Yes?”

“We found the original inheritance file.”

“And?”

A pause.

Then:

“The trust was not meant for Ethan alone.”

Jonathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

The detective answered:

“It was meant for Ethan and his mother.”

Jonathan froze.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“But Claire is dead.”

Silence.

Then:

“Mr. Cole…”

The detective lowered his voice.

“We found something else.”

“What?”

“A life insurance record.”

Jonathan waited.

May you like

The answer came.

“Claire Cole may not have died four years ago.”
