Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the False FuneralClaire returned two days later.

But she did not come home.
Not immediately.
Because four years of fear could not disappear in one moment.
Jonathan understood.
The woman standing in front of him was Claire.
But also someone changed by everything she survived.
When she saw Ethan, she stopped.
The little boy froze.
Neither moved.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Mommy?”
Claire broke.
She dropped to her knees.
And Ethan ran into her arms.
For years, Jonathan imagined this moment.
He imagined happiness.
Relief.
A perfect reunion.
But reality was different.
It was painful.
Because they were not getting back what they lost.
They were meeting again after being stolen from each other.
Claire held Ethan tightly.
“I’m sorry.”
The little boy cried.
“I thought you forgot me.”
Claire shook her head.
“Never.”
Jonathan watched.
And for the first time in years…
his family was whole.
But the danger was not over.
Claire explained everything.
The night of the accident.
She had discovered Richard’s financial crimes.
Millions stolen from company accounts.
Money hidden through fake companies.
She confronted him.
Then she discovered something worse.
Richard was not only stealing money.
He was controlling the inheritance.
The billion-dollar trust created by Claire’s family.
The trust belonged to Ethan.
But only if Claire remained his legal guardian.
Richard needed both of them gone.
Claire’s “death” solved one problem.
Ethan’s fake death solved another.
Jonathan stared.
“So they wanted Ethan gone because of the trust.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you?”
“They wanted me blamed.”
“For what?”
Claire looked down.
“They created evidence that I had financial problems.”
Jonathan felt sick.
“They made you look guilty.”
“Yes.”
“And then they killed your identity.”
Claire nodded.
“They buried me without a body.”
Silence.
Jonathan looked at her.
“How did you survive?”
Claire looked away.
“Someone helped me.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“Evelyn.”
Jonathan froze.
“Evelyn?”
Claire nodded.
“She was involved.”
“She threw Ethan into the snow.”
“I know.”
Jonathan looked confused.
“Why would she help you?”
Claire sighed.
“Because she realized too late what Richard was planning.”
The next day, Jonathan confronted Evelyn.
She was released temporarily as the investigation continued.
He placed the documents on the table.
“You knew.”
Evelyn looked down.
“Yes.”
“You knew Claire was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Ethan was never dead.”
“Yes.”
Jonathan’s voice broke.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Richard?”
“Yes.”
“You let me grieve for four years.”
“I know.”
“You let my son believe he had no mother.”
Evelyn started crying.
“I made a terrible choice.”
Jonathan stared.
“You don’t get to call that a choice.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn said:
“There is something else.”
Jonathan looked up.
“What?”
“Richard was not acting alone.”
His expression changed.
“Who?”
Evelyn handed him a document.
A partnership agreement.
Jonathan read the names.
Richard Cole.
His uncle.
And…
Vanessa Carter.
Jonathan looked up.
“Who is Vanessa?”
Evelyn whispered:
“The woman who was supposed to become your new wife.”
Jonathan froze.
Because Vanessa was not just part of the conspiracy.
She was the person who comforted him after Claire died.
The person who helped raise Ethan.
The person who stood beside him while hiding the truth.
That night, Claire found something hidden inside the old family archives.
A letter.
Written by Richard.
One sentence was underlined.
Once Jonathan accepts Ethan’s death, the inheritance becomes ours.
Jonathan stared.
The entire plan was clear.
They did not just want money.
They wanted his entire life.
His wife.
His son.
His trust.
His family.
Everything.
Then Claire noticed one more line.
A date.
The date of the final inheritance transfer.
Tomorrow.
Jonathan looked up.
“They think Ethan is dead.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Jonathan closed the folder.
“Then tomorrow…”
May you like
His voice became cold.
“They find out he is alive.”
