Chapter 7: The Husband She Never Knew
Mara forgot how to breathe.
The voice coming from the speaker above them was impossible.
Impossible.
And yet she knew it.
Every laugh.
Every pause between words.
Every slight roughness at the end of a sentence.
Daniel.
Her husband.
The man she had buried six years ago.
The man whose photograph still sat beside her bed.
The man whose clothes she had packed away in a cardboard box because she couldn’t stand seeing them every morning.
The man whose last words to her had been:
“I love you. I’ll be home tonight.””
He never came home.
The police said his car went off the mountain road during a storm.
They said it was an accident.
They said there was no reason to believe anything else.
Mara had believed them.
Until now.
The speaker crackled.
“Mara.””
Lily looked up at her.
“Who is that?””
Mara couldn’t answer.
Because she didn’t know anymore.
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Turn it off.””
Adrian didn’t move.
“You need to hear it.””
Rebecca’s face twisted with anger.
“You don’t get to decide what she hears.””
“No,” Adrian said calmly.
“But someone has to.””
Father Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
“We need to leave.””
Mara didn’t move.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the speaker.
“Play it.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“Mara.””
“Play it.””
“Mara, please.””
“After twenty years of secrets, after everyone deciding what I could handle, I’m done being protected.””
Her voice broke.
“I want the truth.””
Adrian pressed the button.
Static.
Then Daniel’s voice returned.
“Mara, if you’re listening to this, then something happened.””
A pause.
“Something I was afraid would happen.””
Mara closed her eyes.
His voice carried memories she didn’t want.
Sunday mornings.
Coffee in bed.
The way he sang badly while cooking.
The way he always forgot where he left his keys.
The way he held her hand when she was scared.
She hated that she still missed him.
“I know you trusted me,” Daniel continued.
Mara opened her eyes.
“And I know what you’re about to learn will make you question everything.””
Rebecca looked down.
“Mara,” the recording said, “I wasn’t honest with you about who I was.””
The words cut.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“My real name wasn’t Daniel Cross.””
Mara stared.
“What?””
The room was silent.
“My name was Daniel Vale.””
Adrian looked at Mara.
She turned slowly.
“Vale.””
Adrian nodded.
Mara felt sick.
“You’re related.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Adrian looked at the floor.
“Daniel was my brother.””
The speaker continued.
“He was part of the organization you’re about to discover.””
Mara shook her head.
“No.””
“He joined them when he was young.””
“No.””
“He believed he could change them from inside.””
Mara stepped back.
“No.””
Rebecca reached for her.
“Mara—”
“No.””
She looked at Rebecca.
“You knew?””
Rebecca’s silence was the answer.
Mara’s face changed.
“You knew my husband’s real name.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was connected to this.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me mourn him?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Mara laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
The recording continued.
“Rebecca was the first person who showed me what they were doing.””
Mara looked at the speaker.
Daniel’s voice softened.
“She showed me the children.””
The photographs on the wall seemed to stare back.
“The records.””
“The families.””
“The lies.””
A pause.
“I tried to leave.””
Adrian whispered, “He did.””
The recording continued.
“But they don’t let people leave.””
Mara’s eyes moved to Adrian.
“Who are they?””
No one answered.
Daniel’s voice grew quieter.
“If you find Lily, protect her.””
Lily looked at Mara.
The child looked terrified.
“Because Lily is the last piece.””
Mara frowned.
“Last piece of what?””
The recording stopped.
Everyone waited.
Then the speaker clicked again.
A second file started.
This voice wasn’t Daniel’s.
It was a woman.
Older.
Cold.
“Daniel Vale was never loyal.””
Mara felt the blood leave her face.
Adrian looked shocked.
The woman continued.
“He believed love could excuse betrayal.””
Rebecca whispered:
“No.””
Mara looked at her.
“You know that voice.””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
The woman continued.
“His wife knows nothing.””
A pause.
“Which makes her useful.””
Mara’s stomach turned.
“She will lead us to the child.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Mara looked at Rebecca.
“Who was that?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Your mother-in-law.””
Mara stared.
“Daniel’s mother?””
Rebecca nodded.
Adrian looked away.
Mara understood.
The pieces began moving.
Not fitting.
Breaking.
“Your mother knew about this?””
Adrian answered.
“Yes.””
“Then why did she never tell me?””
“Because she was one of them.””
Mara looked at him.
“One of who?””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“The people who created the program.””
The room became silent.
Lily suddenly spoke.
“Does that mean my father was bad?””
Everyone turned.
Mara looked at the child.
“No.””
She didn’t know if it was true.
But she knew Lily needed to hear it.
“No, sweetheart.””
Lily looked at Rebecca.
“Was he?””
Rebecca walked toward her.
“No.””
“Then why did everyone hide me?””
Rebecca knelt.
“Because adults make terrible choices when they’re afraid.””
Lily looked down.
“I’m tired of being a secret.””
Mara felt something break inside her.
She understood that feeling.
Being left outside the truth.
Being the last person to know.
She walked over and knelt beside Lily.
“You’re not a secret anymore.””
Lily looked at her.
“Promise?””
Mara hesitated.
Then nodded.
“I promise.””
A loud crash echoed from above.
Everyone froze.
Father Daniel looked toward the tunnel.
“They’re inside the church.””
Adrian picked up the recorder.
“We need to move.””
Mara stood.
“Where?””
“St. Agnes.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You know what’s there.””
“That’s why we have to go.””
Mara looked between them.
“What is St. Agnes?””
Rebecca took a slow breath.
“The place where Lily was born.””
“And?””
“The place where the original records are hidden.””
Adrian added:
“The records that prove who controls everything.””
Father Daniel grabbed his coat.
“Then we leave now.””
They moved quickly through the tunnel.
But Mara noticed something.
Rebecca wasn’t looking at the exit.
She was looking at Lily.
Like she was afraid.
“Mara.””
Mara stopped.
Rebecca’s voice was barely audible.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.””
Mara turned.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at Lily.
Then at the silver half-moon.
“When Lily was born, the doctors discovered something.””
“What?””
Rebecca swallowed.
“She wasn’t the only baby.””
Mara froze.
“What are you saying?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“There was another child born that night.””
The tunnel seemed to go silent.
“Who?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Your father’s child.””
Mara stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“It’s the reason they’ve been searching for Lily.””
“But Lily is Daniel’s daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then whose child was the other one?””
Rebecca looked at the darkness ahead.
And said:
“The child who was taken.””
A distant sound echoed through the tunnel.
Footsteps.
Someone was following them.
Adrian lifted his head.
“They found the passage.””
Mara grabbed Lily’s hand.
“Run.””
They reached the end of the tunnel.
A rusted metal door waited ahead.
Father Daniel unlocked it.
Cold night air rushed in.
They stepped outside behind the church.
For one brief moment, Mara thought they were safe.
Then a car engine started.
A black SUV sat at the edge of the alley.
The driver’s window lowered.
A woman looked out.
An older woman.
Elegant.
Calm.
Familiar.
Adrian stopped.
Rebecca went pale.
Mara stared.
Because she had seen that face before.
In Daniel’s family photographs.
The woman smiled.
“Hello, Mara.””
Her voice was the same one from the recording.
Daniel’s mother.
She stepped out of the car.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet my son’s wife.””
Her eyes moved to Lily.
“And the child who should have died.””
Then she looked back at Mara.
“Now tell me.””
May you like
She smiled.
“Where is the other one?””
