Chapter 8: The Child They Hid
Mara stared at the woman standing beneath the streetlight.
For a moment, she couldn’t understand what she was seeing.
This was Daniel’s mother.
The woman who had hugged Mara at her wedding.
The woman who had held her hands and whispered, “Welcome to our family.””
The woman who had cried beside her at Daniel’s funeral.
The same woman now stood in the rain asking where the other child was.
The child who should have died.
Mara stepped in front of Lily.
“You.””
The woman tilted her head.
“Yes.””
“You knew.””
A faint smile touched her lips.
“I knew many things.””
Rebecca moved closer.
“Evelyn, don’t.””
The woman’s expression hardened.
“Still protecting everyone except yourself, Rebecca?””
Mara looked at Rebecca.
“Evelyn?””
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Evelyn Vale.””
Daniel’s mother looked toward Adrian.
“You brought them here.””
Adrian’s face was cold.
“I brought the truth.””
“No.””
Evelyn looked at him with disappointment.
“You brought chaos.””
“You mean consequences.””
She ignored him.
Her eyes returned to Mara.
“You must have so many questions.””
Mara laughed quietly.
It wasn’t humor.
It was exhaustion.
“You think?””
Evelyn walked closer.
Father Daniel stepped forward.
“Stay back.””
She looked at him.
“You’re still playing priest?””
“And you’re still pretending you’re innocent.””
Evelyn smiled.
“I never pretended.””
That answer shocked Mara.
Most people denied the things they did.
Evelyn didn’t.
She simply stood there like she had nothing to hide.
Mara’s voice lowered.
“What did you do to my husband?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Your husband made choices.””
“He died.””
“Yes.””
“You expect me to believe that was an accident?””
Evelyn said nothing.
That was enough.
Mara felt anger rise.
“You killed him.””
Adrian looked away.
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Evelyn sighed.
“Daniel always had a weakness.””
“What?””
“His heart.””
Mara clenched her fists.
“He loved people.””
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice was calm.
“He believed he could save them.””
She looked at Lily.
“That was his mistake.””
Lily shrank behind Mara.
Mara noticed.
And something inside her snapped.
“You will not look at her like she’s a problem.””
Evelyn’s eyes moved back to Mara.
“She is not a problem.””
“Then what is she?””
“A key.””
Mara felt sick.
“She’s a child.””
“Yes.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“And that is exactly why everyone underestimated her.””
A car door opened behind Evelyn.
Two men stepped out.
Mara immediately recognized one.
The man from the church.
The one who had searched the office.
Father Daniel moved slightly.
“There are too many.””
Adrian whispered:
“Stay calm.””
Mara looked at him.
“You have a plan?””
“No.””
“Great.””
“I have an idea.””
“That’s not better.””
Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled.
For a second, Mara saw the resemblance.
The same expression Daniel used to make when he was trying to pretend everything was fine.
She hated that.
She hated that some part of Adrian reminded her of the man she loved.
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“You were always like your brother.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
“You loved him.””
“Yes.””
“And you hated him.””
“Yes.””
Evelyn nodded.
“That is why you were useful.””
Mara looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Evelyn did.
“Adrian helped us find Daniel.””
Mara turned.
“What?””
Adrian’s face went still.
“That was years ago.””
“You knew where he was.””
“Yes.””
“You helped them?””
Adrian looked at Mara.
“I was young.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“It’s my shame.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Adrian changed.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Did he?””
She looked at Mara.
“Ask him how many times he watched Daniel run.””
Mara stared.
“Is that true?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
Mara felt betrayed.
Again.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had a reason.
And somehow she was always the last person standing in the middle of the wreckage.
Lily reached for her hand.
Mara looked down.
The child was shaking.
She made a decision.
Whatever the truth was.
Whatever Daniel had hidden.
Whatever Rebecca had done.
Whatever Adrian had done.
Lily was not going to pay for it.
Mara stepped forward.
“You want her?””
Evelyn smiled.
“I want answers.””
“No.””
Mara looked at her.
“You want control.””
For the first time, Evelyn’s expression changed.
“You sound like your mother.””
Mara froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“What do you know about her?””
Evelyn looked almost amused.
“More than you do.””
Mara’s chest tightened.
Her mother had always been the quiet one.
The woman who avoided conflict.
The woman who cried whenever Rebecca was mentioned.
But now another piece of the puzzle appeared.
Another lie.
“What did my mother have to do with this?””
Evelyn looked toward the church.
“Everything began with her.””
Rebecca whispered:
“No.””
Mara turned.
“What?””
Rebecca looked terrified.
“Evelyn is lying.””
“Is she?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
That hurt more.
Because Mara was beginning to understand.
The truth was never one clean answer.
It was layers.
And every layer had someone she loved buried underneath.
A sound suddenly came from the street.
A police siren.
Everyone looked toward the road.
Evelyn frowned.
“That wasn’t expected.””
Adrian looked at Father Daniel.
“You called them?””
Father Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Mara heard tires screech.
Several police cars turned onto the street.
Lights flashed across the buildings.
Evelyn stepped back.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
“Move.””
The men beside her reached inside their coats.
Adrian reacted instantly.
He grabbed Mara’s arm.
“Down.””
A loud crack echoed.
Mara pulled Lily to the ground.
Glass shattered above them.
Someone had fired.
People screamed.
Father Daniel dragged Rebecca behind a stone wall.
Adrian moved toward Evelyn.
Not away.
Toward her.
Mara saw it.
“You’re protecting her?””
“No.””
He grabbed Evelyn’s arm.
“I’m stopping her.””
They moved through the chaos.
Police shouted.
More shots rang out.
Then suddenly Evelyn pulled free.
She looked directly at Mara.
“You want the truth?””
Mara stood frozen.
Evelyn reached into her coat.
She threw something across the ground.
A small envelope.
It landed near Mara’s feet.
“Open it.””
Adrian shouted:
“Don’t!””
Evelyn smiled.
“Because inside is the answer to the question she’s been asking all night.””
Mara picked up the envelope.
Her hands trembled.
The paper inside was old.
A birth certificate.
She unfolded it.
Then froze.
The name at the top wasn’t Lily Gray.
It wasn’t even Lily Vale.
It was another name.
A name she had never heard.
But beneath it was the mother’s name.
Rebecca Ellison.
And the father’s name.
Mara felt the world tilt.
Because the father listed wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Adrian.
It wasn’t anyone she expected.
It was:
Thomas Ellison.
Her father.
Rebecca’s father.
Mara’s father.
The man everyone said was dead.
The man who had supposedly been protecting them.
The man who had supposedly been trying to expose the truth.
Her hands went numb.
“No.””
Rebecca saw the paper.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
“Mara.””
Mara looked at her sister.
“You knew.””
Rebecca began crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Rebecca couldn’t answer.
“When?””
“After we reached St. Agnes.””
Mara stepped back.
“Why?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Because Lily is not the child they’re searching for.””
Mara looked at Lily.
The little girl stood frozen.
Confused.
Afraid.
Rebecca continued:
“The child they want is the one your father hid.””
Mara looked back at the birth certificate.
“Then who is Lily?””
Rebecca’s voice broke.
“She’s the child your father created to protect the other one.””
Silence.
The sirens grew louder.
Evelyn disappeared into the darkness.
And before anyone could stop him, Adrian looked at Mara and said:
“Your father had two daughters.””
Mara stared.
“No.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at Lily.
“Lily is the second.””
Mara’s heart pounded.
“Then where is the first?””
Rebecca whispered the answer.
May you like
And the world stopped.
“She’s been with you all along.””
