Chapter 12: The Patient Under Another Name

The medical facility stood behind a row of tall trees on the outskirts of the city.

It was a private rehabilitation and long-term care center, surrounded by clean lawns and pale stone walls. The entrance was bright with afternoon sunlight, and visitors moved through the lobby carrying flowers, gift bags, and paper cups of coffee.

Nothing about the building looked like a place where a family secret could survive for twenty-nine years.

Yet Ryan's car sat in the visitor parking lot.

Nia stood beside Marcus near the reception desk, holding Amara securely against her chest. Brielle and Evelyn waited a few steps behind them while Officer Cole spoke with the facility's security manager.

“We need to establish whether Ryan Mitchell is here,” Cole said.

“We're not asking for private medical information without proper authority. We're following up on a matter that may involve a missing person and disputed legal records.””

The security manager nodded.

“I understand. I'll check the visitor log and speak with our administrator.””

He disappeared through a side door.

Brielle paced beside a row of chairs.

“If Ryan is here, he knows something.””

“Maybe,” Nia replied.

“He stole the photographs.””

“We don't know what he took or why.””

“His car is here.””

“That doesn't prove he's found your father.””

Brielle stopped.

“Why are you defending him?””

“I'm not. I'm trying to make sure we don't turn suspicion into fact before we know what happened.””

Brielle looked away.

“You're right.””

Nia adjusted Amara's blanket.

“I'm tired of people telling us what they think happened. I want evidence.””

Evelyn stood near the window, staring at the entrance.

“Daniel used to say that evidence was the only thing people couldn't argue with.””

Nia looked at her.

“Then why did you spend six years hiding?””

Evelyn lowered her head.

“Because evidence can disappear. People can disappear. And sometimes the truth arrives too late to protect the people you love.””

Nia felt anger rise again, but she swallowed it.

She wanted to believe her mother had been protecting her.

She also knew that fear had taken six years from them.

Both things could be true.

The security manager returned with a woman wearing a white coat and a hospital identification badge.

“I'm Dr. Melissa Grant, the facility's medical director,” she said.

“Officer Cole has explained that you're trying to verify a patient's identity.””

Cole nodded.

“We have reason to believe Daniel Brooks may be receiving care here under another name. We need to know whether the facility can help us establish his identity through lawful procedures.””

Dr. Grant's expression became cautious.

“We take patient confidentiality very seriously.””

“We understand,” Marcus replied.

“We're not asking you to disclose a diagnosis or treatment history. We are asking you to preserve any relevant records and cooperate with the proper authorities if there is evidence of identity fraud or a missing-person matter.””

Dr. Grant studied Evelyn.

Then she looked at Nia.

“Ms. Brooks, have you personally seen the patient you believe may be your father?””

“No.””

“Has your mother?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes. Two months ago.””

Dr. Grant considered this.

“Then I can arrange for our administrator to review the request. If the patient is here, any disclosure will need to follow the applicable legal and privacy requirements.””

Nia nodded.

“That's fair.””

The administrator arrived fifteen minutes later.

He reviewed the information Marcus had provided, made several calls, and eventually returned with a sealed folder.

“I can confirm that a patient matching the identifying information you supplied has received services here,” he said.

“However, the patient is registered under a different name.””

Nia's heart began to pound.

“What name?””

The administrator looked at Cole.

“We'll need to establish the proper authority before disclosing the complete record.””

Cole nodded.

“Understood.””

He stepped aside to make a call.

Brielle gripped Nia's arm.

“It's him.””

“We don't know yet.””

“It has to be.””

Nia looked toward the hallway.

“What if it is?””

Brielle's eyes filled.

“Then I want to ask him why he let all of this happen.””

Nia understood.

She wanted to ask the same question.

Why had her father disappeared?

Why had her mother been declared dead?

Why had two babies apparently received altered identities?

And why had Ryan spent years trying to gain access to the records?

Officer Cole returned.

“We've received guidance on the next steps. The facility can preserve the relevant records, and the administrator has agreed to cooperate with the appropriate verification process.””

The administrator nodded.

“I can also confirm that the patient is currently in the building.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Nia felt her knees weaken.

“Can we see him?””

“Not until the identity verification is completed and the patient agrees to receive visitors, unless another lawful basis applies.””

Nia nodded.

She could wait.

She had already waited twenty-nine years.

Another hour would not change the truth.

While the administrator worked, Marcus received a call from the police investigator handling the wedding incident.

He listened carefully, then asked the caller to repeat something.

“What did they find?”” Nia asked when he ended the call.

“Ryan entered the facility earlier today. He used his own identification at reception.””

“Why?””

“He claimed he was visiting a family friend.””

“Did he see Daniel?””

“The visitor log shows he requested access to a patient registered under the name David Bennett. We haven't yet confirmed whether that patient is Daniel.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“David Bennett.””

Nia looked at her.

“Does that name mean anything to you?””

“No.””

Marcus studied the visitor log the administrator had provided.

“There's another detail. Ryan signed in at 10:12 a.m. He left at 10:47.””

Brielle looked at him.

“That's before we arrived at the foundation.””

“Yes.””

“He must have taken the photographs afterward.””

“Possibly.””

Nia frowned.

“Why would he come here, then go to the foundation?””

Marcus considered the question.

“Perhaps he was trying to locate a person and then retrieve documents connected to that person.””

“Or he was trying to stop us from finding something,” Brielle said.

Neither possibility could yet be ruled out.

A nurse approached the administrator and whispered something to him.

He nodded and turned toward Evelyn.

“Ms. Brooks, the patient has agreed to speak with you.””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Now?””

“Yes. But I need to make one thing clear. The patient has not yet been formally identified as Daniel Brooks. We are allowing a private conversation because he has consented to receive you, not because we have confirmed his identity.””

Nia appreciated the distinction.

“Thank you.””

The administrator led them down a bright corridor to a private sitting room.

A large window overlooked a garden. A vase of yellow flowers stood on a side table beside a stack of magazines.

An older Black man sat in an armchair near the window.

He wore a pale blue sweater and dark trousers. His hair had turned almost entirely gray, and a thin scar ran from his left temple toward his cheek.

He looked up when the door opened.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

The man stared at her.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he slowly stood.

“Evelyn?””

Her knees nearly buckled.

She took one step toward him, then stopped as if she wasn't sure she had the right to come any closer.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“You're alive.””

Evelyn laughed through her sobs.

“So are you.””

He reached for her hand.

She took it.

They stood together in the middle of the room, crying silently, while Nia watched the father she had spent her entire life believing had abandoned her.

Finally, Daniel turned toward her.

He looked at her face for a long time.

“Nia?””

She couldn't answer.

He took one cautious step forward.

“Baby girl.””

Nia's throat closed.

She had heard those words twice in two days.

Once from a mother who had returned from the dead.

Now from a father who might have been hiding under another name.

She held Amara closer.

“Don't call me that yet.””

Daniel stopped immediately.

“You're right.””

Nia blinked.

She had expected him to defend himself, to offer an explanation, or to ask for forgiveness.

Instead, he lowered his head.

“I haven't earned it.””

The admission unsettled her more than an excuse would have.

Brielle stood near the door, staring at Daniel.

He looked at her, and his expression changed.

“Brielle Whitmore.””

She stiffened.

“You know me?””

“I've seen your photographs.””

“From where?””

Daniel glanced at Evelyn.

Then he looked back at Brielle.

“From the records I was trying to protect.””

Brielle stepped forward.

“Did you know Lorraine was my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know she was alive?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I believed she was alive for several years. Then I was told she had died.””

“By whom?””

“Charles Whitmore.””

Brielle's face hardened.

“My father.””

Daniel nodded.

“He told me Lorraine had died after an illness. He sent me documents that appeared to support his claim.””

“Did you believe him?””

“At first.””

“And then?””

“Then I discovered inconsistencies.””

Brielle's voice shook.

“What inconsistencies?””

“The dates didn't match. The hospital records had been amended. The funeral documentation came from an office that no longer existed.””

Nia stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I didn't know where you were.””

“You knew my mother.””

“I lost contact with her.””

“You knew my name.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I existed.””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Then you could have found me.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I should have tried harder.””

The room fell silent.

Nia felt tears sliding down her cheeks.

She wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier if he had shouted, denied everything, or blamed her mother.

Instead, he stood in front of her, admitting that he had failed.

And that failure had shaped her entire life.

“Why were you using another name?”” she asked.

“Because I was afraid someone would find me before I could recover the original records.””

“Who?””

“Charles. And possibly Ryan.””

Nia looked at him sharply.

“What do you mean, possibly Ryan?””

Daniel moved toward the table.

“I received a message from Ryan three months ago. He said he had located a document that could prove the identity reassignment was unauthorized.””

Brielle's eyes widened.

“What document?””

“A final beneficiary declaration.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“The missing document from the archive.””

Daniel nodded.

“I believe so.””

Nia felt her pulse quicken.

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I gave it to Ryan.””

Everyone froze.

“You gave Ryan the document?”” Nia repeated.

“I thought he intended to expose what had happened.””

“And instead, he used it to manipulate us?””

“I don't know what he did with it.””

Brielle shook her head.

“He stole the photographs from the foundation today.””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Then he's looking for something else.””

“What?”” Nia demanded.

Daniel glanced at Amara.

“The declaration identifies the child who was entitled to the trust.””

Nia's stomach tightened.

“And which child is that?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, the door burst open.

Officer Cole hurried into the room.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

Nia turned toward him.

“What happened?””

Cole looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to speak with you about the person who visited earlier today.””

Daniel's face changed.

“Ryan?””

Cole nodded.

“He left something with the front desk.””

He held up a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

Daniel stared at it.

Then he whispered, “No.””

Nia stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Cole opened the bag under the appropriate evidence procedures and unfolded the page.

It was a photocopy of the missing beneficiary declaration.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Daniel Brooks.*

But Daniel shook his head violently.

“I never signed that.””

Marcus examined the copy.

“Then we need to establish whether the signature is authentic and how this document was obtained.””

Daniel looked at Nia, his face stricken.

“Your father has been using my name.””

Nia's voice trembled.

“Which father?””

Daniel went completely still.

For the first time, he seemed to understand the question.

And before he could answer, Brielle's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed one name.

*CHARLES WHITMORE.*

She answered on speaker.

Her father's voice came through, calm and precise.

“Brielle, darling. I need you to listen very carefully.””

She stared at the phone.

“What do you want?””

Charles paused.

Then he said, “The man you're sitting with is not Daniel Brooks.””

The room went silent.

Brielle looked at the older man.

Nia felt Amara stir against her chest.

And Evelyn, who had just reunited with the man she believed was her daughter's father, slowly released his hand.

Charles continued.

“Ask him what happened to the real Daniel Brooks.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood motionless beside the window.

Then he reached into his pocket and removed an old photograph.

It showed a younger version of himself standing beside another man.

The two men looked almost identical.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

“There is something I should have told you before you came here,” he said.

Nia stared at him.

“What?””

He looked at Evelyn.

Then at Brielle.

Finally, he turned to Nia.

“My name is Daniel Brooks.””

May you like

He paused.

“But the man Charles is talking about is my twin brother.””
