Chapter 14: The Signature That Changed Everything
Ryan Mitchell had signed the authorization.
Nia read the name until the letters seemed to blur.
For years, she had believed Ryan's greatest betrayal was the affair that ended their marriage. Then she discovered his involvement in the trust. Then the suspicious filing, the wedding, and the documents bearing her name.
Now his signature appeared on a petition connected to the identities of two newborns.
Brielle stood beside the hospital bed, shaking her head.
“He wasn't even born into this family. Why would he have authority over our records?””
“He shouldn't have,” Marcus said.
“The presence of his signature is a reason to investigate, not proof that the authorization was legally valid.””
Officer Cole placed the document inside a protective sleeve.
“We'll have the signature examined and determine how this filing entered the court system.””
Nia looked at David.
“Why would Ryan sign it?””
David's face tightened.
“Because he believed it would make him powerful.””
“That's not an explanation.””
“No,” David admitted.
“It's the beginning of one.””
He looked toward Daniel.
“Tell her about the meeting.””
Daniel sat beside the bed.
“Three months before Ryan proposed to Brielle, he contacted me. He said he had been hired to review certain family trust documents. He wanted to know whether the original beneficiary declaration could be enforced.””
“Did you tell him where the original was?””
“No. I told him the records had been altered and that he should speak to a lawyer before getting involved.””
“But he got involved anyway.””
“Yes.””
Nia felt her stomach twist.
“He was already planning to marry Brielle.””
Daniel nodded.
“I believe he was being encouraged to do so.””
Brielle's voice trembled.
“By my father?””
“Possibly. We need to establish who paid him and what he was promised.””
Marcus turned to David.
“You said the signature was connected to a petition that used Lorraine's name. Was there an original court filing?””
“Yes. I saw it years ago. It requested temporary authority to protect the infant beneficiary while the trust was investigated.””
“Who signed it?””
“The judge signed the order. But the petition itself was submitted under Lorraine's name without her knowledge.””
Brielle looked devastated.
“So someone pretended my mother asked for me to be hidden.””
David nodded.
“And then used that petition to justify changing the hospital records.””
Nia looked at the original declaration again.
“Who was supposed to benefit from the change?””
David hesitated.
“The trust's assets were not meant to go to a particular child simply because of a surname. The beneficiary had to be established through the original birth records.””
“Then why change the identities?””
“Because whoever controlled the records could delay the determination and control the assets while the dispute remained unresolved.””
Brielle stared at the floor.
“My father could have been doing that for years.””
“He may have,” David said.
“But I won't tell you he did without evidence.””
The caution angered her, but she understood it.
Too many people had turned suspicion into certainty and used the resulting confusion to control them.
Officer Cole received a message and stepped away to answer it. When he returned, he looked at Nia.
“Ryan has been located. He's at the police station, accompanied by his attorney. He has agreed to an interview.””
“Agreed?”” Nia repeated.
“After everything he's done?””
“He's not under arrest at this time. The documents need to be examined, and investigators must establish the facts.””
Nia turned to Marcus.
“I want to be there.””
Marcus considered it.
“You may be able to attend part of the process, but the investigators will determine who can participate. You should also consider whether hearing his account directly is in your best interest.””
“I need to know why he used my name.””
Brielle stepped beside her.
“And I need to know whether he ever intended to marry me.””
Nia looked at her.
“He might tell us whatever he thinks will save him.””
“Then we listen for the parts that don't make sense.””
Marcus nodded.
“If the investigators permit it, we can prepare questions in advance.””
Two hours later, Nia and Brielle sat in a small interview room at the police station. Their attorneys were present, and Officer Cole remained near the door.
Ryan entered wearing the same dark suit he had worn to his wedding. His tie was gone, and his hair was disheveled.
When he saw Nia, he stopped.
His gaze shifted to Brielle.
“I didn't expect both of you.””
Brielle gave a bitter laugh.
“You didn't expect us to compare notes?””
Ryan sat down.
“I understand why you're angry.””
“No,” Nia replied.
“You understand that we're finally in a position to ask questions you can't control.””
Ryan looked at the table.
Officer Cole placed a copy of the disputed authorization in front of him.
“Do you recognize this document?””
Ryan studied it.
“Yes.””
“Is that your signature?””
Ryan hesitated.
“Yes.””
Brielle's face went pale.
“You signed a petition to change our identities?””
“I signed an authorization connected to the trust review.””
“You knew about the hospital records.””
“I knew there was a dispute.””
“You knew about the protected beneficiary.””
“Yes.””
Nia leaned forward.
“Did you know I was the beneficiary?””
Ryan looked at her.
“I didn't know which of you was.””
“Did you sign a document using my name?””
“No.””
“Did you ask anyone to do it?””
He hesitated.
Nia's voice sharpened.
“Answer the question.””
“I asked a lawyer to prepare documents that would establish the beneficiary's identity. I did not authorize anyone to forge your signature.””
Marcus intervened.
“We need the name of that lawyer and all communications concerning the filing.””
Ryan nodded.
“I'll provide them through my attorney.””
Brielle stared at him.
“Why did you propose to me?””
Ryan looked stricken.
“Brielle—”
“Don't say my name like that. You stood in front of hundreds of people and promised to love me. Was any of it real?””
He swallowed.
“Some of it was.””
She flinched as though he had slapped her.
“Some?””
“I did care about you.””
“But you also wanted access to the trust.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was brutal.
Brielle looked away, tears gathering in her eyes.
“Did you ever intend to tell me?””
Ryan was silent.
“Did you?”” she repeated.
“No.””
Brielle closed her eyes.
Nia felt a familiar ache in her chest, but it was no longer the ache of a woman who wanted her husband back. It was the anger of someone realizing how carefully she had been managed.
“Why did you come to the facility?”” she asked.
Ryan looked at her.
“I was trying to find David.””
“Why?””
“He has the original declaration. I wanted to know whether it named the beneficiary.””
“You could have asked.””
“I didn't think he'd tell me.””
“So you took the photographs instead?””
Ryan looked startled.
“I didn't take those photographs.””
“Your car was at the foundation. Security footage places you inside.””
“I went there to retrieve a document I had left in Charles's office. I never saw the photographs.””
Brielle folded her arms.
“Then why did you go to the medical facility?””
Ryan's shoulders sagged.
“Because Charles told me David had resurfaced. He said David was unstable and might destroy the trust records. He asked me to retrieve the declaration before the police became involved.””
“Did you believe him?””
“I believed he was trying to protect his family.””
Brielle's voice turned cold.
“That's what every liar says.””
Ryan looked at her.
“I know.””
Nia placed her phone on the table.
“Three days before you proposed to Brielle, a document was filed using my name. What was it?””
Ryan stared at the screen.
“A temporary guardianship petition.””
“For whom?””
“For Amara.””
Nia went rigid.
“My daughter wasn't born yet.””
“I know.””
“You filed a petition involving an unborn child?””
“I was told it was necessary to protect the beneficiary's assets in the event that the child was connected to the trust.””
“Who told you to do it?””
Ryan looked toward his attorney.
His attorney leaned forward.
“My client is prepared to cooperate, but we need to review the scope of the question.””
Nia's eyes never left Ryan.
“Who told you?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Charles.””
Brielle shook her head.
“My father?””
“He said there was a risk the trust could be challenged if a child was born into the Brooks family before the beneficiary's identity was established. He told me to prepare a temporary petition to prevent the assets from being transferred until the records were verified.””
“And you used my name without permission,” Nia said.
“I believed the filing was legitimate.””
“Did you forge my signature?””
“No. The document was filed electronically through an attorney's office. I didn't sign your name.””
“Then whose signature was it?””
Ryan hesitated.
“I don't know.””
Officer Cole wrote something down.
Marcus looked at Ryan.
“You will need to provide the name of the attorney, the complete filing history, and any communications relating to the petition.””
Ryan nodded.
Brielle leaned toward him.
“One last question. Did you ever love me?””
Ryan's face crumpled.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you do it?””
“Because I thought I could fix everything before you found out.””
Brielle stared at him.
“You didn't want to fix it. You wanted to own the truth.””
Ryan looked down.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Officer Cole's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and immediately straightened.
“What do you mean the records were accessed?””
Nia watched his expression change.
“Who accessed them?””
Cole listened again.
Then he ended the call and turned toward Marcus.
“The hospital's original archive was accessed this afternoon by someone using a court authorization that appears to have been issued under the same case number as the disputed petition.””
Marcus stood.
“Was anything removed?””
“The hospital hasn't completed its inventory.””
Nia felt a chill spread through her body.
“Which records?””
Cole looked at her.
“The original birth records for both infants.””
Brielle gripped the edge of the table.
“Who took them?””
“The hospital has identified the person who presented the authorization.””
Cole paused.
“Charles Whitmore.””
Brielle stood so abruptly her chair scraped across the floor.
“He knew we were coming.””
Marcus gathered his papers.
“We need to secure the remaining records and notify the court immediately.””
Ryan looked up.
“Charles has the original records?””
Cole nodded.
“Apparently.””
Ryan's face drained of color.
“Then he has what he needs.””
Nia turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan stared at her.
“The original records don't just identify the beneficiary.””
He swallowed.
“They identify the child who was removed from the hospital.””
Brielle went still.
“Removed?””
Ryan nodded.
“And if Charles has those records, he can find her.””
Nia looked at Officer Cole.
“Who is she?””
Cole's phone rang again.
He answered, listened, and slowly lowered it.
“We have a name,” he said.
Nia's heart pounded.
“Whose?””
Cole looked at Brielle.
“Your father has just reported a missing woman.””
He paused.
“A woman registered under the name *Amara Brooks*.””
Nia clutched her daughter instinctively.
“No.””
Cole shook his head.
“Not your baby. An adult woman. Thirty years old.””
Brielle stared at him.
“Why would she have Nia's surname?””
Cole looked at the document in his hand.
“Because according to the original hospital records, she was registered under that name before the identity reassignment.””
Nia felt the room tilt.
An unknown woman had been born on the same night as her and Brielle.
A woman who had disappeared before anyone could establish who she was.
May you like
A woman who might have spent thirty years living under an identity that was never hers.
And Charles Whitmore knew where to find her.
