Chapter 8: The Signature That Changed Everything

For a moment, I couldn't understand the sentence.

My father stood in front of me, holding a document that claimed a stranger was my biological father, while the man who had raised me for sixteen years stared at the floor.

I waited for Marcus to laugh.

I waited for him to say Daniel had forged the record.

I waited for somebody to tell me this was another terrible misunderstanding.

Nobody did.

“Say something,” I whispered.

Marcus looked up.

“Maya—”

“Tell me he's lying.””

His mouth trembled.

“I don't know what to believe.””

I took a step backward.

“You're my dad.””

He nodded immediately.

“Yes.””

“You raised me.””

“Yes.””

“You taught me to ride a bike. You came to every school performance. You sat beside Mom in the hospital when she was sick.””

Tears blurred my vision.

“You told me I had her eyes.””

Marcus's face crumpled.

“You do.””

“Then why is some stranger claiming to be my father?””

He reached for me, but I pulled away.

“I need you to answer me!””

“I don't know the answer, sweetheart.””

The words broke something inside me.

For sixteen years, I had believed my life began with two people who loved each other, a hospital room, and a photograph of my mother holding me.

Now every memory seemed to have a question hidden inside it.

Had my father known?

Had my mother known?

Had Vanessa spent all these years looking at me and seeing someone else's child?

I turned toward her.

“Did you know Daniel might be my biological father?””

Vanessa was crying openly now.

“I didn't know that for certain.””

“But you suspected.””

She looked away.

“Answer me!””

“Yes,” she whispered.

I felt sick.

“How long?””

“Since before I married your father.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew before we got married?””

Vanessa nodded.

He took a step toward her.

“You married me knowing that someone might have taken my daughter?””

“I didn't know Naomi had been taken!””

“But you knew about the transfer.””

“I thought it was legal. I thought Denise had agreed.””

“You watched me raise Maya without telling me that the documents might be false.””

Vanessa's shoulders shook.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Marcus looked at her with a mixture of grief and disgust.

“By humiliating my child?””

“No.””

“By throwing away her mother's things?””

“No!””

“By making her feel like she didn't belong in her own home?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I was afraid.””

The admission hung between them.

I wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand.

“You were afraid of me?””

She shook her head.

“I was afraid of what you represented.””

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“When I first met you, you were eight years old. You had your mother's smile, her way of tilting her head when you were confused, even the way you held your pencil when you wrote. Every time I looked at you, I remembered what I had done.””

My stomach tightened.

“What you had done?””

She looked down.

“I signed the document that allowed Naomi to be transferred.””

My father closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued, her voice barely audible.

“I believed I was protecting her. Daniel told me that Denise had agreed to the arrangement. He said Naomi needed specialist care and that your mother would never survive the stress of losing another child if she knew where Naomi was going.””

Angela shook her head.

“Denise never agreed to that.””

“I know that now!””

“How could you believe a stranger over your own family?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because Daniel showed me documents. Because he knew things about Denise that I didn't. Because I was young and frightened, and I believed the adults who seemed to know what they were doing.””

Marcus leaned against the table.

“And when did you learn the truth?””

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

“After Denise died.””

The room became silent.

She continued.

“I found a letter in her desk. She had written that she knew Naomi was alive. She said she had finally discovered that the transfer had never been authorized by the hospital's medical director. She wanted to tell Marcus, but she was afraid Daniel would move Naomi somewhere else.””

I looked at Angela.

“Did you know about that letter?””

Angela nodded.

“Denise told me she had found evidence, but she never showed me the complete file.””

“Why not?””

“Because she thought someone was watching her.””

My father gripped the edge of the table.

“Why didn't either of you come to me?””

Angela looked at him.

“Because Denise believed you would be blamed for the transfer. She had been told that your signature appeared on another document.””

Marcus stared at her.

“My signature?””

“Yes.””

“I never signed anything!””

“I know.””

I watched my father struggle to process it.

The man who had taught me that honesty mattered was discovering that his name might have been used to hide the disappearance of his own daughter.

And I was discovering that the woman who had helped raise me had spent years hiding a decision she could never undo.

I looked down at the hospital papers.

“There's one thing I don't understand.””

Everyone turned toward me.

“If Daniel is my biological father, why did Mom raise me with Marcus?””

Angela drew a slow breath.

“Because biology wasn't the only truth Denise cared about.””

She looked at my father.

“Marcus loved her. He loved you. He was there for the appointments, the sleepless nights, the first kicks, and every ordinary moment that made you a family. Whatever Denise knew about Daniel, she believed Marcus was the person who would protect you.””

My eyes filled again.

I looked at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

He crossed the room slowly and knelt in front of me.

“I don't know what those papers mean yet,” he said.

“I don't know why Daniel's name is there or who authorized that transfer. But I know I was there when you took your first breath in my arms. I know I held you when you cried. I know I sat beside your bed when you had nightmares.””

His voice broke.

“And I know that no document can make me stop being your father.””

I began to cry.

He opened his arms, and this time I let him hold me.

For a few seconds, I was simply his daughter again.

Then I remembered Naomi.

I pulled back.

“Where do we find her?””

Marcus wiped his eyes.

“We start with the records.””

Angela reached into her handbag and removed another folded paper.

“Denise gave me this shortly before she died.””

She placed it beside the hospital transfer document.

It was a handwritten list of names, addresses, and dates. Most had been crossed out. One remained untouched.

A woman's name.

*Dr. Evelyn Price.*

Beneath it was a hospital name and an address.

I looked up.

“Who is she?””

Angela answered carefully.

“She was the physician who signed Naomi's original birth record.””

My father took the paper.

“Do you know if she's still alive?””

“I believe she is.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“You cannot contact her.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Why not?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Because Daniel said she was the only person who could prove what happened.””

My father stared at her.

“And you never told us?””

“I was trying to keep everyone safe.””

“You've used that excuse for sixteen years!””

Vanessa flinched.

Then she reached into the pocket of her emerald dress and removed a small, folded card.

“I kept this because I didn't know what else to do.””

She placed it on the table.

The card bore a telephone number and a handwritten message.

If you ever want to know where the second child went, call me.

The signature beneath it belonged to Dr. Evelyn Price.

Marcus picked up his phone.

“I'll call her.””

He dialed the number.

We listened to the ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman's voice answered.

“Hello?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Dr. Price? My name is Marcus Carter. I believe you delivered my daughter sixteen years ago.””

There was a long silence.

Then the woman whispered, “Which daughter?””

My father closed his eyes.

“The one who disappeared.””

Another silence.

Finally, Dr. Price spoke.

“I've waited sixteen years for someone to ask me that question.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Where is Naomi?””

The doctor's voice trembled.

“Before I tell you where she is, you need to understand something about the night she was born.””

“What?””

“She wasn't the only child whose identity was changed.””

My father went completely still.

I felt his hand close around mine.

And Dr. Price delivered the words that made me question everything all over again.

“Maya Carter was not the name written on the first birth certificate.””
