Chapter 3: The Name on the Folder

“Who is that man?””

Marcus's question hung in the bright living room.

On the security monitor, the stranger stood outside the front entrance in a dark suit. The camera captured his face clearly enough to show his composed expression, close-cropped hair, and the way he held the folder without looking surprised to receive it.

Vanessa stood behind Marcus, utterly still.

“I asked you a question,” Marcus said.

“Who is he?””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You're on camera handing him a folder.””

“Maybe he's a delivery driver.””

“Delivery drivers don't usually wait in the driveway while you bring them documents from my study.””

“You're making assumptions.””

“No. I'm watching evidence.””

He enlarged the recording again.

The man didn't wear a delivery uniform. He carried no package of his own. He had arrived in a dark sedan, parked beyond the front gate, and waited until Vanessa appeared.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Why did you leave the house with that folder?””

Vanessa took a breath and lifted her chin.

“Because I needed to handle something privately.””

“Privately?””

“Yes, Marcus. Privately. Married people are allowed to have private matters.””

“Not when those matters involve taking money from our safe and planting evidence on my mother.””

“Stop saying I stole it!””

“Then tell me where the money is.””

Vanessa tightened her grip on her handbag.

“I already told you. I moved it.””

“Where?””

She said nothing.

Evelyn stood beside Noah, wiping her cheeks with the corner of her cardigan. Her eyes remained fixed on Vanessa.

“I thought you trusted me enough to let me live here,” Evelyn said softly.

“I thought we were family.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You were living here because Marcus wanted you here. Don't make it sound like I invited you into my life.””

Marcus stepped between them again.

“Don't you dare speak to her like that.””

Evelyn lowered her head.

“It's all right, baby.””

“No, Mom. It isn't.””

Noah wrapped both arms around his grandmother's waist.

“You didn't do anything,” he told her.

“I saw Mom near your coat earlier.””

Vanessa spun toward him.

“What did you just say?””

Noah stiffened.

Marcus crouched slightly to meet his son's eyes.

“Tell me exactly what you saw, son.””

Noah swallowed.

“I was looking for my school jacket. Mom was standing by Grandma's coat. She told me to go upstairs.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You were snooping.””

“I was looking for my jacket!””

“You should learn to mind your own business.””

Marcus rose.

“He's nine years old, Vanessa. He shouldn't have to defend himself because you got caught.””

Her nostrils flared.

“Caught doing what? You're treating one video like it explains everything.””

“Then let's watch the rest.””

Marcus returned to the monitor and pressed play.

The front-door camera showed Vanessa handing over the folder. The stranger opened it just enough to glance inside, then closed it and tucked it beneath his arm.

Vanessa leaned toward him and spoke.

The camera had no audio.

Marcus adjusted the playback speed, studying her mouth and movements. She pointed toward the house, then toward the folder. The stranger looked in the same direction.

Toward the living room.

Toward Marcus's home.

Marcus felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach.

“What did you tell him?”” he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

“That man is looking directly at our house.””

“He was standing outside. Of course he looked at it.””

“Why does he have a folder from my study?””

She pressed her handbag against her side.

“Maybe you should ask yourself why you're so determined to make me the villain.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You stole ten thousand dollars, framed my mother, and handed a stranger something from my study. What exactly am I supposed to think?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with anger, but beneath it he saw something else.

Fear.

Marcus returned to the timeline and advanced the recording.

The stranger shifted the folder under his arm. Vanessa reached out and touched his sleeve, stopping him for one more moment.

Then she pointed toward the house again.

The camera's timestamp continued to advance.

Marcus zoomed in on the folder.

At first, the lettering was blurred by the angle. He sharpened the image and enlarged the frame until the label became legible.

MARCUS BENNETT.

His full name.

Printed in bold black letters across the front.

Marcus felt as if the floor had shifted beneath him.

“That's my name,” he whispered.

Vanessa didn't answer.

Evelyn moved closer to Noah, her fingers trembling against his shoulder.

Marcus replayed the moment when the stranger opened the folder. The pages inside remained partly concealed, but the top sheet slid forward just enough to reveal a photograph.

Marcus leaned toward the screen.

It was his photograph.

The stranger studied it, then looked toward the house.

Vanessa pointed at the picture.

Marcus stopped the footage.

“What did you give him?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

For once, no explanation came.

The security monitor continued displaying the frozen image: the unknown man holding the folder, Marcus's photograph visible inside, and Vanessa's finger directed toward it.

Marcus stared at the screen, unable to look away.

Behind him, Vanessa stood frozen.

Beside Noah, Evelyn began to cry again.

And Marcus realized that whatever his wife had set in motion, the missing money was no longer the only thing he needed to understand.
