Chapter 6: The House Was Never Just a House
Marcus stood motionless, his phone still displaying the authorization bearing his signature.
On the security monitor, the woman at the gate checked her watch and lifted her document case. She appeared professional and unhurried, as if she had an appointment that had already been confirmed.
The words on her card remained visible.
PROPERTY TRANSFER — FINAL VERIFICATION.
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“Tell me what she wants.””
Vanessa's eyes shone with tears.
“Marcus, please. Let me explain.””
“You've had every opportunity to explain.””
“I was trying to protect our family.””
“By transferring our house?””
She shook her head.
“It's complicated.””
“No. It's a document with my name on it and a stranger standing at our gate. Start talking.””
Evelyn moved beside her son.
“Baby, don't sign anything else until you understand it.””
“I won't, Mom.””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn with open resentment.
“You have no idea what you're interfering with.””
Evelyn straightened her cardigan.
“Maybe not. But I know what it looks like when somebody is trying to take something that doesn't belong to them.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Marcus tapped the intercom on the security panel.
“Can I help you?”” he asked.
The woman at the gate looked up at the camera.
“Mr. Bennett? My name is Denise Carter. I'm here regarding a property authorization and transfer verification scheduled for today.””
Marcus glanced at Vanessa.
She was staring at the floor.
“What transfer?”” Marcus asked through the intercom.
Denise consulted a document in her case.
“I have an appointment confirmation listing you as the property owner and your wife as the authorized representative.””
Marcus's fingers tightened around the panel.
“Did I personally confirm this appointment?””
Denise paused.
“The appointment was arranged through your representative. I was informed that you were aware of the process.””
“I'm not.””
Denise's expression changed.
“I see. In that case, I won't proceed without speaking directly to you and reviewing the relevant authorization.””
Marcus looked toward Vanessa again.
“Tell her to leave.””
Denise heard him through the intercom.
“Understood, Mr. Bennett. I can wait at the gate while you review the paperwork, or I can reschedule once the authorization has been clarified.””
“Please leave the documents at the gate and don't proceed with anything.””
“Of course.””
Denise placed a sealed envelope inside the gate's delivery box and stepped back.
Marcus ended the call.
The living room felt smaller than it had a few minutes earlier.
He walked to the table and placed his phone beside the empty cash envelope.
“One thing at a time,” he said.
“The money. The folder. The signature.
The property transfer. Explain every part.””
Vanessa sat on the armchair, her designer handbag resting in her lap.
“I was in trouble.””
Marcus waited.
She rubbed her palms together.
“I borrowed money.””
“From whom?””
“People I shouldn't have borrowed from.””
“How much?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“More than I could repay.””
“That's not a number.””
She looked up at him.
“Thirty-five thousand dollars.””
Evelyn gasped.
Marcus stared at his wife.
“Thirty-five thousand?””
“I thought I could pay it back before you found out.””
“With what money?””
Vanessa looked at the handbag.
Marcus followed her gaze.
“The ten thousand dollars.””
She nodded.
“I needed to make a payment. I was going to replace it.””
“You stole from our safe to pay a debt you hid from me?””
“I didn't know what else to do!””
“You could have told me.””
“You would have judged me!””
Marcus took a step backward, as if the distance might help him understand what he was hearing.
“We've been married for twelve years, Vanessa. You think I would rather find out that you stole money from me than hear that you were in trouble?””
“You don't understand the pressure I was under.””
“Then help me understand.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I borrowed the money to cover expenses. Then the payments got bigger. I missed deadlines.
They threatened to take legal action. I thought if I could get access to the house, I could use the equity to settle everything.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You planned to use our house to pay your personal debts?””
“I planned to refinance it.””
“Without telling me?””
“You would have said no.””
“Because you were hiding thirty-five thousand dollars in debt!””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“I was trying to save our marriage!””
“No. You were trying to save yourself from the consequences of your choices.””
The words struck harder than he intended. Vanessa's face crumpled, but Marcus couldn't make himself take them back.
Evelyn sat down again, pressing her fingers to her temples.
“Lord, have mercy,” she whispered.
Noah moved to her side.
“Grandma, do you want me to get your medicine?””
“Not now, sweetheart. Just stay with me.””
Marcus glanced at his son and softened his voice.
“Noah, take Grandma into the kitchen for a moment. Get her some water. I'll be right there.””
Noah hesitated.
“Dad, are you going to let Mom take our house?””
“No, son.””
“Promise?””
Marcus looked directly into his eyes.
“I promise I won't agree to anything I don't understand.””
Noah nodded and gently guided Evelyn toward the kitchen.
When they were gone, Marcus turned back to Vanessa.
“Who was the man with the folder?””
She looked at the floor.
“Someone who said he could help.””
“Help you transfer the house?””
“He said the paperwork would give me temporary control so I could arrange the financing.””
“Did he tell you what would happen afterward?””
Vanessa's silence was answer enough.
Marcus pulled a chair away from the table and sat down.
“Did you read what you signed?””
“Yes.””
“Did you read what I signed?””
Her face crumpled again.
“I thought it was safe.””
“You thought?””
“He said everything was standard.””
“Who said that?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can't tell you.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“You can. And you will. Because if somebody is using my signature to move property without my informed consent, this is no longer just a disagreement between husband and wife.””
She looked at him in alarm.
“You're going to call the police?””
“I'm going to find out exactly what happened and protect my family.””
“I am your family!””
“Then you should have protected us, too.””
Vanessa sank into the chair.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper. Her fingers trembled as she placed it on the table.
“This is what he gave me,” she whispered.
“He said if I followed the instructions, I could settle the debt before anyone got hurt.””
Marcus unfolded it.
The paper contained several printed instructions and a list of documents to bring to the property appointment. At the bottom was a company name and a telephone number.
He photographed the page with his phone.
“Who is he?”” Marcus asked again.
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
“I only know the name he gave me.””
“What name?””
She stared at the front door.
“Mr. Reed.””
Marcus glanced at the security monitor, where the driveway stood empty. The man had left, but his image remained paused on the screen, holding the folder marked with Marcus's name.
Marcus picked up the instruction sheet.
At the bottom, beneath the company details, was a handwritten note.
If Marcus asks questions, remind Vanessa what happens when the payment is late.
Marcus read it twice.
Then he raised his eyes to his wife.
“What payment?””
Vanessa's face went white.
She reached for the paper, but Marcus held it back.
“Vanessa.””
Her breathing quickened.
“Please,” she whispered.
“You don't understand what he threatened to do.””
“What did he threaten?””
She looked toward the kitchen, where Evelyn and Noah were waiting.
Then she leaned across the table and spoke so quietly that Marcus almost didn't hear her.
“He said if I didn't complete the transfer today, he would come back for our son.””
Marcus froze.
Outside, a car door slammed.
May you like
The security monitor flashed with a fresh motion alert.
And the front-door camera showed a black sedan pulling back into the driveway.
