Chapter 2: The Receipt Nobody Was Supposed to See

Darius kept staring at Vanessa.

The bright botanical ballroom remained exactly as it had been moments earlier: sunlight spilling over white roses, crystal chandeliers glittering above the guests, and tropical greenery framing the altar.

Yet the entire room seemed to have changed.

The music had stopped.

The guests weren't pretending to look elsewhere anymore.

Every face had turned toward the bride.

Darius lifted the receipt slightly.

“Seventy-two thousand five hundred dollars,” he said.

“My mother paid this?””

Vanessa took a step toward him.

“Darius, give me the paper.””

“Answer the question.””

“It was a private financial arrangement.””

“Then why did you tell me your father covered the wedding?””

Vanessa's lips parted, but no answer came.

Her father finally stood.

“Son, this isn't the time or place.””

Darius turned toward him.

“Mr. Reed, with respect, your daughter just humiliated my mother in front of everyone we know. I think the time and place have already been decided.””

A few guests murmured in agreement.

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Let's keep our voices down.””

“My voice isn't the problem.””

Vanessa reached for Darius's arm.

“Baby, please. You're upset, and I understand that. But you're misunderstanding what happened.””

He gently removed her hand.

“Then explain it.””

She looked at the guests again.

“I don't want to discuss our finances in public.””

“You had no problem discussing my mother's place in your family in public.””

“That was different.””

“How?””

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time that afternoon, the polished confidence she had worn like another layer of satin began to crack.

Loretta folded the receipt carefully.

“Darius,” she said softly, “you don't need to do this for me.””

He turned toward her.

“Mom, I need to understand.””

She looked at Vanessa, then at Richard.

Something passed across her face—something more complicated than anger.

“Perhaps this isn't the right moment,” Loretta said.

Vanessa seized on the suggestion.

“Exactly. Thank you, Loretta. At least somebody here understands that a wedding shouldn't turn into a public interrogation.””

Loretta's expression changed.

“I didn't say that to protect you, Vanessa.””

The bride fell silent.

Loretta straightened her shoulders. Her hands were still trembling, but her voice had grown steadier.

“I said it because I don't want my son making decisions while he's hurt.””

Darius looked down at the receipt again.

“Mom, how did you end up paying the balance?””

Loretta hesitated.

“I received a call from the venue three weeks ago. They said the final payment hadn't arrived.””

Vanessa's head snapped toward her.

“You told me you wouldn't discuss that.””

“I told you I wouldn't discuss your personal business,” Loretta replied.

“I didn't promise to lie to my son.””

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

“Three weeks ago?””

Loretta nodded.

“The coordinator said the account would be marked overdue if the balance wasn't settled by the deadline. I knew how much this day meant to you.””

He stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you were excited. You kept talking about the flowers, the ceremony, the honeymoon. I didn't want to put another worry on your shoulders.””

“You paid seventy-two thousand dollars, Mom.””

“Seventy-two thousand five hundred,” she corrected quietly, glancing at the receipt.

“I made sure they included the service charges.””

A nervous laugh escaped someone near the back, then disappeared when nobody joined in.

Darius couldn't understand how his mother could correct the amount with such calm precision while standing in a room full of people who had just watched her get insulted.

“Where did you get that kind of money?”” he asked.

Loretta looked at him.

“From money I had saved.””

“For what?””

She took a breath.

“For emergencies. For the future. For things I hoped I would never need it for.””

Darius's eyes burned.

He knew his mother had saved carefully. He knew she had spent years denying herself small comforts. But he had never imagined she had taken such a sum from those savings for his wedding.

“Did Vanessa ask you to pay?”” he asked.

Loretta didn't answer immediately.

That silence frightened him more than anything she could have said.

Vanessa stepped between them.

“This is getting ridiculous. Your mother offered to help, and I accepted. That's all.””

Darius looked at her.

“You told me your father paid.””

“My father contributed.””

Richard shifted uncomfortably.

“I paid the initial deposit,” he said.

“That's what we agreed to.””

“Then why did you let me believe your family was covering the rest?””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Because I knew how you would react if you found out my parents weren't paying for everything!””

“So you let me believe something that wasn't true?””

“I was trying to protect our wedding.””

“From the truth?””

“From you turning every little thing into a problem!””

Loretta closed her eyes for a moment.

Simone, the coordinator, remained beside her, holding the clipboard against her waist.

“I should clarify one detail,” Simone said cautiously.

“Mrs. Carter didn't simply volunteer at the last minute. She contacted our office after the account had been placed on hold. She asked us to keep the arrangements confidential so the couple wouldn't feel pressured.””

Vanessa shot her a furious look.

“Nobody asked you to speak.””

Simone stiffened.

“I'm only explaining the payment record.””

“Then explain it somewhere else.””

Darius took one step forward.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Vanessa threw up her hands.

“Unbelievable. You're defending a wedding coordinator now?””

“I'm defending people who are being treated like they don't matter.””

Richard moved closer.

“Darius, listen. My daughter has been under tremendous pressure. She wanted everything to be perfect.

Weddings cost money. People make compromises.””

Darius turned to him.

“Did you know Loretta paid the balance?””

Richard's silence lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

Darius looked from Richard to Vanessa.

“You both knew.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with frustrated tears.

“Please stop.””

“Did you both know?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“I knew your mother had offered financial assistance.””

“Financial assistance?”” Darius repeated.

“That's what we're calling it?””

Loretta quietly placed her hand on his wrist.

“Son.””

He looked at her.

She gave the slightest shake of her head.

Not because Vanessa deserved protection, but because Loretta had no desire to turn the room into a battlefield.

Darius drew a long breath.

“Fine. I'm going to ask one more question, and I need an honest answer.””

Vanessa wiped beneath one eye, careful not to disturb her makeup.

“What?””

He held the receipt between them.

“If your family wasn't paying for the wedding, why were you so determined to keep my mother from standing beside yours?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then her gaze darted toward her father.

Richard's face had gone rigid.

And Loretta, who had been silent for nearly the entire confrontation, looked at him with an expression Darius had never seen before.

Not surprise.

May you like

Recognition.

As if she had just realized that the money was only one part of something much larger.
