Chapter 5: The Bride's Hidden Signature

For several seconds, Darius couldn't move.

He stared at Vanessa as if the woman standing before him had suddenly become someone he had never met.

“You signed it?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks with the heel of her hand.

“Darius, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Richard.

Her father shook his head once.

It was a small gesture, almost invisible to everyone except the people watching him closely.

Vanessa noticed.

And for the first time that afternoon, she ignored him.

“I signed an acknowledgment,” she said.

“It wasn't a promise to pay anything.””

Loretta closed her eyes.

Darius turned toward his mother.

“Is that true?””

“The document I signed referred to an attachment,” Loretta answered.

“I was told it would establish how the outstanding balance would be handled if certain deadlines were missed.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“It was a standard business provision.””

“Then why is Vanessa's name on it?”” Darius asked.

“Because she's my daughter.””

“That explains why she might know about the agreement. It doesn't explain why she signed it.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“My father asked me to sign because he wanted to keep the arrangement within the family.””

Darius stared at her.

“And you never thought to mention that to me?””

“I was told it wasn't necessary.””

“By your father?””

“Yes.””

Darius let out a quiet, bitter laugh.

“So when you told me your family was paying for the wedding, you already knew your father owed my mother hundreds of thousands of dollars.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I knew there was a debt. I didn't know all the details.””

Loretta spoke gently.

“You knew enough to understand why I was worried.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I knew you wanted the money back.””

“I never demanded that you repay it.””

“You kept bringing it up.””

“Because your father kept promising repayment dates and missing them.””

Richard stepped between them.

“This is enough. Vanessa has nothing to do with my business decisions.””

Darius pointed at the document.

“Then why did she sign it?””

“Because she wanted to help her family.””

“By hiding the truth from the man she was about to marry?””

Richard's face darkened.

“Marriage is not an invitation to expose every private matter involving your parents.””

Darius nodded slowly.

“You're right about one thing. Marriage doesn't mean we own every private detail of each other's lives.””

He glanced at Vanessa.

“But it does mean we don't build our future on lies that directly affect us.””

Vanessa began crying harder.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That you would look at my family differently.””

“I do look at your family differently now.””

She recoiled.

Darius immediately regretted how sharply the words had come out, but he didn't take them back.

He wasn't trying to punish her.

He was trying to understand how a woman who had promised to stand beside him could watch his mother pay a fortune to save their wedding and then refuse to acknowledge her in front of their guests.

Loretta stepped closer to Vanessa.

“Child, look at me.””

Vanessa reluctantly raised her eyes.

“I never wanted your father to be ashamed,” Loretta said.

“I wanted him to keep his word. Those are two different things.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“You don't understand what my father is like when he's desperate.””

Richard's head snapped toward her.

“Vanessa.””

She turned on him.

“No! You don't get to keep doing that.””

Her voice echoed through the glass-ceilinged ballroom.

“You tell me to stay quiet, and I stay quiet. You tell me not to tell Darius, and I don't tell him. You tell me the money will be there by the deadline, and I believe you. Then I have to smile through dinner while people ask why we haven't paid the venue.””

Richard stared at her.

“You're making this sound worse than it was.””

“Because it was worse!””

Several guests exchanged glances.

Vanessa pressed a hand against her chest, trying to steady her breathing.

“I had calls from the venue. I had calls from vendors. I kept telling everybody the payment was being processed because you said it was.””

Darius looked at her.

“Did you know the venue was going to put the wedding on hold?””

Vanessa nodded.

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

The answer struck him harder than the revelation about the debt.

Two weeks ago, he had sat beside Vanessa at their kitchen island, tasting samples from the caterer and discussing the music for their first dance.

She had laughed when he suggested an old soul song his mother used to play while cooking Sunday dinner.

She had kissed his cheek and told him she couldn't wait to become his wife.

And all the while, the venue had been threatening to suspend their arrangements.

“Why didn't you tell me?”” he asked.

“Because you would have wanted to postpone everything.””

“Maybe I would have.””

“I didn't want that.””

“Why?””

“Because everybody had already been invited. The flowers were ordered. My parents had spent months telling their friends about the wedding.””

Darius stared at her.

“So this was about appearances.””

“It was about more than that!””

“Then tell me what else.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, but her father cut in.

“She was protecting this family.””

Darius turned toward him.

“From what?””

Richard's face had become rigid.

“From humiliation.””

Loretta gave a sad shake of her head.

“You cannot protect a family by making another family carry all the shame.””

Richard looked away.

Simone approached with a phone in her hand.

“Mrs. Carter, I just spoke with our accounts manager. He has located the reference to Attachment B. He can send a certified copy to the email address associated with the agreement.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“That won't be necessary.””

Simone looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Reed, the request came from the account holder.””

Loretta nodded.

“I would like the copy, please.””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Loretta, we can discuss this after the wedding.””

“There is no reason to wait.””

“You're putting everyone in a difficult position.””

“I didn't put anyone here.””

She glanced at Vanessa.

“I paid a bill that wasn't mine because I wanted my son to have the wedding he dreamed of. I kept your financial troubles private because I believed you would eventually make things right. I stood quietly while your daughter told an entire room that I wasn't family.””

Her voice trembled, but she continued.

“I have done enough to protect everyone's pride.””

Darius gently touched his mother's shoulder.

She gave him a grateful look.

Vanessa stood alone beside the altar, her bouquet hanging at her side.

“Darius,” she whispered, “I never wanted your mother to get hurt.””

He looked at her.

“Then why did you let it happen?””

She couldn't answer.

Simone's phone chimed.

She read the message, then looked at Loretta.

“The accounting manager has located the attachment. There's one important detail he asked me to confirm before sending it. It lists an additional witness who signed on the same day as you and Mr. Reed.””

Darius frowned.

“Another witness?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Simone checked the screen.

“The name is listed as Marcus Carter.””

Darius stopped breathing.

Marcus Carter was his father.

The man who had died when Darius was seventeen.

He looked at Loretta.

“Mom, Dad was involved in this?””

Loretta's face lost its color.

She reached for the back of a nearby chair.

Vanessa whispered, “I thought you said he didn't know.””

May you like

Richard closed his eyes.

And Darius realized that the secret behind the wedding payment reached much further into his family's history than anyone had admitted.
