Chapter 2: The Video She Never Expected Anyone to See
Vanessa's expression changed so quickly that Maya almost missed it.
One moment, she was furious.
The next, she was afraid.
It lasted only a second, but Maya saw it.
So did the woman standing nearest the stage.
“Vanessa?”” the woman asked.
“What is she talking about?””
“Nothing,” Vanessa snapped.
Then she turned toward Maya.
“Put that phone away.””
Maya didn't answer.
She was already moving toward the audiovisual station, keeping her phone firmly in her hand.
The ballroom's polished floor reflected the chandeliers overhead. Waiters stood frozen beside silver serving trays. Guests shifted in their chairs, their conversations dying as they realized this was no ordinary family disagreement.
Vanessa hurried after her.
“Maya, stop this nonsense immediately.””
Maya reached the control station.
A young technician wearing a black suit looked up from his equipment.
“Miss Carter?”” he asked uncertainly.
“I need to connect my phone to the projector.””
The technician glanced at Vanessa approaching behind her.
“I'm not sure that's authorized.””
“Please,” Maya said.
“It's important.””
Vanessa arrived and slammed her palm onto the table.
“She is not authorized to touch anything! Disconnect whatever she's doing.””
The technician hesitated.
He looked at Maya's scratched cheek.
Then at the hand Vanessa had planted on the equipment.
“Ma'am,” he said carefully, “I need to know what you want me to do.””
“I want you to remove her.””
Maya stepped between Vanessa and the technician.
“No.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“You think you can stand there and order people around at my event?””
“You said I attacked you.””
“Because you did!””
“Then why are you afraid of the video?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The silence lasted long enough for several guests to exchange looks.
A man in a navy tuxedo rose from his chair.
“Let the girl show it,” he said.
Vanessa swung toward him.
“Excuse me?””
“If she's lying, the video will prove it.””
“You have no idea what you're involving yourself in.””
“Neither do you,” he replied, looking at Maya's face.
Vanessa's fingers curled around the edge of the control table.
Maya looked down at her phone.
The video was still there.
She had recorded it earlier that evening without intending to.
Before the gala, Vanessa had cornered her in a quiet section of the ballroom and demanded that she sign a statement withdrawing her complaints about the foundation's treatment of her.
Maya had refused.
Vanessa had become furious.
Maya had started recording because she was tired of being told that nobody would believe her.
She hadn't planned to show the footage to hundreds of strangers.
She hadn't planned to become the center of a public spectacle.
But she had also never imagined that Vanessa would attack her in front of them.
“Connect it,” Maya told the technician.
The young man studied her for another moment.
Then he reached for the cable.
Vanessa lunged forward.
“Don't you dare!””
The technician recoiled.
Maya moved between them, clutching her phone.
“Stop!””
Her voice cracked through the ballroom.
Vanessa froze.
Maya's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't look away.
“You can call me a liar,” Maya said.
“You can tell everyone I'm confused. You can say I'm ungrateful because I won't do what you want.””
She took a shaky breath.
“But you don't get to tell them what they saw when you weren't there to control the story.””
A woman at the nearest table slowly stood.
“Vanessa, perhaps we should all calm down.””
Vanessa pointed at her.
“Sit down, Denise.””
Denise remained standing.
“No.””
That single word seemed to hit Vanessa harder than Maya's accusations.
For years, people had allowed Vanessa to dictate the tone of every room she entered. They had mistaken her confidence for authority and her generosity for proof that she could do no wrong.
Now, for the first time that evening, someone had refused to obey her.
Vanessa turned back to Maya.
“You're destroying everything I've built.””
Maya blinked through her tears.
“No. I'm showing them what you did.””
The technician cleared his throat.
“The connection is ready.””
Maya placed her phone beside the control station.
On the giant screen, the foundation's golden emblem disappeared.
A blank blue display replaced it.
The ballroom fell silent.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
“Turn it off,” she whispered.
Maya heard her.
She pressed the final button.
The footage began.
The image was slightly shaky, recorded from Maya's phone earlier that evening. It showed a brightly lit section of the same ballroom, the white tablecloths and crystal chandeliers unmistakable.
Vanessa appeared on the screen.
She was wearing the same gold gown.
The same diamond bracelet.
The same furious expression.
The recorded Vanessa walked directly toward Maya.
Maya watched from beneath the enormous screen, her phone trembling in her hand.
On the footage, the older woman stopped in front of her.
Then she reached out.
Her fingers closed around Maya's hair.
The real Vanessa stopped breathing.
The recorded Maya recoiled, raising her hands as Vanessa yanked her forward.
A sharp gasp traveled through the audience.
On-screen, Maya tried to pull away.
Vanessa followed her.
The image shook violently as Maya stumbled backward.
Then came the moment that silenced the entire room.
Vanessa's arm rose.
Maya flinched.
The strike was visible.
So was Maya's desperate attempt to escape.
At the control station, Maya covered her mouth with one hand.
She had seen the footage dozens of times.
It still hurt.
Because the recording proved what had happened, but it couldn't erase the feeling of Vanessa's fingers in her hair.
It couldn't undo the fear.
It couldn't make the woman who had raised her trust in Maya suddenly real.
The video continued.
On-screen, Maya backed away again.
Vanessa pursued her, pointing and shouting while Maya tried to put distance between them.
The audience watched without moving.
A woman in a silver gown covered her mouth.
A man near the stage slowly lowered his champagne glass.
Then Vanessa's recorded voice rang out across the ballroom.
“Stop acting like I did something to you!””
The real Vanessa stumbled backward.
“Turn that off!”” she shouted.
Nobody reached for the controls.
Maya stared at the screen through tears.
May you like
For once, Vanessa's voice wasn't the loudest thing in the room.
The truth was.
