Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Mother's Secret

“Give me that phone,” Vanessa demanded.

Maya blinked.

“What?””

“Your phone. Give it to me.””

Maya instinctively pulled it closer to her chest.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped forward, but Charles blocked her path.

“That's enough.””

“You have no idea what you're interfering with!””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom doors.

The guests had stopped pretending this was an ordinary family disagreement. Several were openly recording the confrontation on their own phones.

She noticed.

Her face tightened.

“Put those cameras away!”” she shouted.

Nobody obeyed.

A woman near the dance floor lowered her phone slightly but kept recording.

“Why?”” she asked.

“You said the video was taken out of context. Surely you won't mind people recording what happens next.””

Vanessa looked as though she might scream.

Instead, she turned toward Maya.

“Your mother was a complicated woman. She made decisions that affected more people than just herself.””

Maya shook her head.

“Stop using her to explain what you did to me.””

“You don't understand the circumstances.””

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa looked away.

Maya felt the old fear rising inside her, the familiar instinct to apologize and retreat before Vanessa became angrier.

She resisted it.

“Who is Marcus Caldwell?””

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her phone.

“He was your mother's attorney.””

“Why did he send you that message?””

“He shouldn't have.””

“Why?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“Because he has no right to involve himself in this.””

Charles frowned.

“If he handled Renee's estate, he may have every right to clarify what happened.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You know nothing about the agreement.””

“Then perhaps you should explain it.””

For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.

Then she gave a short, bitter laugh.

“Fine. You want the truth? My sister established a financial arrangement before she died.

It was supposed to provide for Maya. But there were conditions, and Renee changed her mind about some of them.””

Maya's breath caught.

“What conditions?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I'm not discussing that here.””

“You've discussed everything else here!””

“Because you forced my hand!””

Maya flinched at the sudden shout.

Denise moved closer, but Maya raised a hand to signal that she was all right.

She wasn't.

But she wanted to hear the answer.

“What did my mother change?””

Vanessa looked at her for a long moment.

Then she said, “She wanted to appoint someone else to manage the money.””

Maya stared.

“Who?””

“I don't remember.””

“You remember everything when it makes me look bad, but suddenly you can't remember the name of the person my mother trusted?””

Vanessa's jaw clenched.

“You're twisting my words.””

“Then correct me.””

Before Vanessa could respond, a man's voice sounded from the ballroom entrance.

“Vanessa.””

Everyone turned.

A tall Black man in his early sixties stood beside the open doors. He wore a charcoal suit, a white shirt, and a dark blue tie. A leather briefcase hung from his right hand.

His expression was grave.

Vanessa's shoulders dropped.

“Marcus,” she said.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Marcus Caldwell walked into the ballroom.

“I received your message.””

“I didn't send you a message.””

“You called my office four times this evening.””

Vanessa glanced at her phone.

Marcus continued.

“And then you left a voicemail instructing me to destroy a document I told you years ago was required to be preserved.””

The guests erupted into whispers.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You're lying.””

Marcus stopped a few feet away.

“I have the voicemail.””

“You have no right to discuss confidential matters in public.””

“I have no intention of discussing privileged legal advice. But I will not participate in concealing a document that may affect a young woman's legal rights.””

Maya's heart hammered.

“Are you the lawyer who handled my mother's affairs?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Yes.””

“Did she leave money for me?””

He paused.

“Yes.””

The single word seemed to pull the air from Maya's lungs.

She gripped the edge of the nearest table.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That money was never simply hers to spend.””

Marcus didn't look at her.

“Maya, your mother established a protected fund intended for your education, living expenses, and future needs. The exact amount and the transactions that followed must be verified against the original records.””

Maya struggled to process the words.

“How much?””

“I don't want to give you an inaccurate figure before reviewing the complete file.””

“But you know there was money.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa told me there wasn't.””

Marcus's expression grew somber.

“I understand that you were given that explanation.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“No,” he admitted.

“It isn't.””

Maya's voice cracked.

“Did my mother leave me that money because she knew Vanessa wouldn't take care of me?””

Vanessa made a furious sound.

“How dare you!””

Marcus raised one hand.

“Please let her ask her questions.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“You have no idea what I did for this child.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I know what you claimed you did. I also know that your sister's instructions were specific.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Marcus set his briefcase on a nearby table and opened it.

Inside were several neatly organized folders.

He removed a sealed envelope and placed it on the table.

“This is a certified copy of the original document. The original has been located in our firm's archived records.””

Maya stared at the envelope.

Her mother's name appeared across the front.

Renee Carter.

Beneath it was a date.

Six days before her death.

The same date Maya remembered seeing on the envelope in Vanessa's office.

“Why was it kept in your archives?”” Maya asked.

“Because your mother requested that the signed agreement be preserved with our firm. She also provided instructions concerning when certain records should be released.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, stop.””

He continued as though he hadn't heard her.

“The document was never destroyed. It was not withdrawn. And it was not replaced by a later agreement bearing Renee's signature.””

Maya felt her knees weaken.

“Then what happened to the money?””

Marcus glanced at Vanessa.

“That is the question the financial records must answer.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“You're making this sound criminal!””

“I have made no such allegation.””

“You're implying I stole from my niece!””

“I am saying the records must be reviewed.””

Vanessa slapped her palm against the table.

“After everything I did, you come here and accuse me of wrongdoing because of a document you failed to explain properly years ago?””

Marcus remained calm.

“I explained the terms of the arrangement to you in writing. More than once.””

Maya looked between them.

“You knew?””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“I knew your mother had complicated wishes.””

“Did you know she left me money?””

Vanessa looked away.

Maya's voice grew louder.

“Did you know?””

The ballroom waited.

Vanessa finally whispered, “Yes.””

Maya stepped backward.

The answer hurt more than she had expected.

Not because the money mattered most.

But because every time she had asked about her mother's plans, Vanessa had looked her in the eye and told her there was nothing to find.

Maya pressed a hand over her mouth.

Marcus gently pushed the envelope toward her.

“There's one more thing you should understand,” he said.

“Your mother didn't simply leave you money.””

Maya looked up.

“She left instructions.””

“What instructions?””

Marcus opened the envelope.

He removed the first page and turned it so Maya could see the signature at the bottom.

Then he pointed to a paragraph beneath the heading.

*APPOINTMENT OF TRUSTEE AND SUCCESSOR GUARDIAN.*

Maya stared at the words.

“My mother named someone to take care of me?””

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“Who?””

Marcus glanced at Vanessa.

Then he looked back at Maya.

“Someone your aunt has spent years insisting had abandoned you.””
