Chapter 5: The Missing Truth
Marcus stood over the ruined photograph.
Nobody spoke.
The city glittered behind him, indifferent to the disaster unfolding inside the penthouse.
He picked up the photograph.
His fingers tightened around the torn edge.
“Denise.””
She stood halfway down the stairs.
“I’m here.””
“No more lies.””
Her eyes closed.
Marcus held up the photograph.
“You're going to tell me everything.””
Denise looked at Tiana.
Then Maya.
Then Jordan.
“I was twenty-nine.””
Marcus frowned.
“Ten years ago?””
“Yes.””
“You were thirty-four.””
“I know.””
“What happened?””
Denise walked slowly into the living room.
She looked at the security camera mounted near the ceiling.
Then at the dark hallway.
“He was my brother.””
Jordan blinked.
“What?””
Marcus stared at her.
“Calvin was your brother?””
Denise nodded.
Maya’s face changed.
“You never told us.””
“I didn't want his name in this house.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Why?””
Denise looked at the photograph.
“Because Calvin was obsessed with proving that your father stole something from him.””
Marcus frowned.
“My father?””
“No.””
Denise’s voice trembled.
“You.””
Marcus stared at her.
“I don't understand.””
“Your company.””
Silence.
Denise continued.
“Ten years ago, you were preparing to acquire a small technology firm. Calvin worked there. He claimed you had stolen his research.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That was a business dispute.””
“To you.””
“To everyone.””
“To Calvin, it was his life.””
Marcus looked away.
“I offered him a settlement.””
“He refused.””
“Because he wanted more money.””
Denise shook her head.
“He wanted recognition.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“He threatened me.””
“I know.””
“He threatened our family.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you defending him?””
“I’m not.””
Denise stepped closer.
“I’m telling you why he became dangerous.””
Jordan suddenly spoke.
“Is that why he attacked you?””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Jordan pointed toward Denise.
“You said he was obsessed with Dad. Did he hurt Mom?””
Denise hesitated.
“Yes.””
Maya’s voice softened.
“When?””
“Before the accident.””
Marcus stared at Denise.
“You never told me.””
“I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“That I had helped him.””
Marcus froze.
Denise looked down.
“I gave Calvin information.””
Maya whispered, “What information?””
“Your schedules. Company meetings. Security changes.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“You betrayed me.””
“I was trying to stop him.””
“You gave him access.””
“I thought I could control him.””
“You couldn't.””
“No.””
Denise's eyes filled with tears.
“I couldn't.””
Tiana suddenly stepped forward.
“That’s not all.””
Marcus turned.
“What else?””
Tiana was shaking.
“Calvin told me what happened after the accident.””
Denise whispered, “Tiana, don't.””
“He survived.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Go on.””
“He was badly injured. He spent months recovering under another name.””
Jordan asked, “Why come back now?””
Tiana looked at Maya.
“Because he says Dad took something from him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I took nothing.””
Tiana whispered, “Not from his company.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then what?””
Tiana looked at Denise.
“His daughter.””
The room went silent.
Denise’s face collapsed.
Marcus stared at her.
“Calvin had a daughter?””
Denise nodded.
Maya’s eyes widened.
“Where is she?””
Denise looked toward Tiana.
Nobody breathed.
Jordan slowly turned.
“Tiana?””
Tiana began crying.
“No.””
Marcus looked from Tiana to Denise.
“What is she saying?””
Denise couldn't answer.
Marcus’s voice became louder.
“Denise!””
Tiana backed away.
“I didn't know until three months ago.””
Marcus approached her carefully.
“Know what?””
Tiana shook her head.
“I'm not his daughter.””
Jordan frowned.
“What?””
Tiana looked at Marcus.
“He told me I was.””
Marcus stared at her.
The words didn't make sense.
Tiana continued.
“He said my whole life was a lie.””
Denise whispered, “Because he wanted to use you.””
Tiana screamed, “Then why did you know who I was?””
Denise broke down.
“I knew your mother.””
Marcus looked at Denise.
“Who was Tiana’s mother?””
Denise couldn't speak.
Tiana answered.
“Her name was Rochelle.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
He knew that name.
A woman from ten years ago.
A woman who had disappeared after the accident.
A woman Denise had once told him was Calvin’s girlfriend.
Marcus slowly sat down.
“Rochelle died.””
Tiana shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus looked up.
“She died.””
“No,” Tiana said.
“She disappeared.””
Maya suddenly looked at her phone.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
Maya had opened the security system.
“There's another camera.””
Marcus stood.
“Where?””
“The service corridor.””
She tapped the screen.
A grainy black-and-white feed appeared.
The corridor was empty.
Then someone stepped into view.
A man.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Dark jacket.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then raised one hand.
He was holding an old photograph.
Maya zoomed in.
The image was clearer now.
It showed Rochelle.
And beside her—
a newborn baby.
Marcus stared.
“That baby…”
Denise whispered, “Yes.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Whose baby?””
Denise started crying.
Before she could answer, the man on the security feed lifted his finger to his lips.
Then he mouthed two words.
*Ask Marcus.*
The screen went black.
Jordan looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Marcus couldn't speak.
Because suddenly he remembered something from ten years ago.
Something he'd buried so deeply he had convinced himself it never happened.
A hospital room.
A crying infant.

And his own voice saying—
“Give her to Denise.””
