Chapter 9: The Man in the Family
Nobody spoke.
Calvin stood in the doorway, hands visible, making no attempt to enter.
Marcus stared at him.
“Say it.””
Calvin looked at Maya.
“Ask your mother.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“I asked you.””
Calvin’s expression hardened.
“Then you'll have to hear it from her.””
Maya turned toward Denise.
“Mom.””
Denise couldn't look at her.
“Who is my father?””
Denise whispered, “I don't know.””
Calvin laughed.
“You still can't say his name.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“You know.””
Calvin looked at him.
“I know everything.””
“Then tell me.””
Calvin shook his head.
“Not until you understand why I came.””
“You framed my son.””
“I needed you to listen.””
“You threatened Tiana.””
“I never touched her.””
Tiana stepped into the study.
“You sent the messages.””
Calvin nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you were the only person in this family who would tell the truth.””
Tiana shook her head.
“You used me.””
“I needed you to expose the lie.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“You almost got me arrested.””
Calvin looked at him.
“I knew your father would eventually see the footage.””
Jordan scoffed.
“You gambled with my life.””
“Yes.””
Marcus moved toward Calvin.
“You don't get to justify this.””
Calvin nodded.
“No.””
He looked at Maya.
“But neither does Denise.””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Tell me.””
Denise finally looked up.
“When you were born, Rochelle told me your father was someone she had known before Calvin.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
“She wouldn't tell me.””
Calvin interrupted.
“She told me.””
Marcus turned.
“And?””
Calvin looked at Maya.
“She was afraid of him.””
Maya whispered, “Why?””
“Because he was married.””
Marcus’s face changed.
Denise closed her eyes.
Maya slowly looked at Marcus.
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Don't.””
Maya's voice trembled.
“Dad…”
“No.””
Calvin said quietly, “That's why you never questioned the dates.””
Marcus looked at Denise.
“Tell her.””
Denise was crying.
“I was pregnant too.””
Maya stared.
“What?””
Denise nodded.
“I found out around the same time Rochelle did.””
Marcus took a step backward.
“You were pregnant?””
“Yes.””
“Whose child?””
Denise couldn't answer.
Marcus's voice cracked.
“Whose?””
Denise looked directly at him.
“Yours.””
Maya froze.
Jordan's face went pale.
Calvin shook his head.
“That's not what happened.””
Marcus turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Calvin stepped into the room.
“Denise was pregnant with your child. Rochelle was pregnant with the same man's child.””
Marcus stared at him.
“No.””
Calvin’s voice was quiet.
“Your father was the one who arranged the hospital records.””
Marcus looked at the certificate.
“The records were changed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father discovered the affair.””
Marcus shook his head.
“What affair?””
Calvin looked at Denise.
She finally whispered:
“Your father believed Rochelle’s baby was yours.””
Maya’s face crumpled.
“And was I?””
Denise shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then who was?””
Denise’s voice barely existed.
“Your brother.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
Jordan whispered, “What?””
Calvin nodded.
“Marcus’s older brother.””
Marcus stared at him.
“My brother died before I met Denise.””
Calvin said, “Exactly.””
The truth seemed to rearrange the entire room.
Maya sat down.
“Then why was I raised as Marcus’s daughter?””
Denise answered.
“Because your father wanted to erase the scandal.””
Marcus looked at her.
“My father?””
“He changed the records. He convinced Rochelle to disappear.””
“And you let him?””
“I was twenty-nine. I was terrified.””
“You let him take my daughter.””
Denise sobbed.
“I thought I was saving her.””
Marcus turned toward Calvin.
“And you?””
Calvin’s expression changed.
“I spent ten years believing Marcus had stolen my child.””
“But she wasn't yours.””
“I didn't know that.””
“You threatened Tiana.””
“I thought Tiana was the child.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So all of this…”
Calvin nodded.
“All of it began with a lie.””
Maya stood.
“Then why did the message say my real father is someone I've seen every day for twenty-two years?””
Calvin looked toward the doorway.
Marcus followed his gaze.
Someone was standing at the end of the hall.
A man.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Wearing a dark suit.
Marcus stared.
His face went pale.
“No.””
Denise whispered his name.
“Richard.””
Jordan looked confused.
“Who is Richard?””
Marcus couldn't answer.
The man stepped into the light.
It was Richard Reed.
Marcus’s older brother.
The brother everyone had believed died twelve years ago.
Maya stared at him.
Richard smiled.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“You're dead.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“That's what Father wanted everyone to believe.””
Maya’s voice shook.
“Are you my father?””
Richard looked at her.
Then at Marcus.
“Yes.””
Marcus’s hands curled into fists.
Richard continued.
“And there is something else you need to know.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a second photograph.
“This family didn't lose one child twenty-two years ago.””
He held it out.
“They lost two.””
Tiana stepped closer.
May you like
Richard looked directly at her.
“And one of them is standing right here.””
