Chapter 5: The Locked Door

Marcus didn't follow Vanessa out of the store.

Not yet.

He stood beneath the bright fluorescent lights with Maya beside him, reading the report again.

One sentence kept burning into his mind.

*Child reports this is not the first incident.*

He looked at Maya.

“How many times?””

She stared at the floor.

“I don't know.””

“Try.””

Maya's lips trembled.

“Sometimes she gets angry.””

“I know.””

“She throws things.””

“I know.””

“She makes me stand in the corner.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Anything else?””

Maya nodded.

“She takes my phone.””

“Okay.””

“She says I'm not allowed to call you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The phone.

The unanswered calls.

The messages from Maya that had stopped months ago.

He had assumed she was becoming distant.

He had blamed school.

He had blamed growing up.

He had blamed himself for working too much.

He had never considered that someone might be standing between his daughter and the phone.

Vanessa returned to the counter.

“You're really going to believe her?””

Marcus looked up.

“I believe what I'm seeing.””

“You don't know what happens in this house.””

“I live there.””

“You're gone half the time.””

The words hit harder than Vanessa intended.

Marcus slowly stood.

“Then maybe that's why I missed it.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Exactly.””

Maya whispered, “Dad…”

Marcus turned toward her.

“Go sit over there for a minute.””

Maya looked nervous.

“Are you going to leave me?””

“No.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

She walked to a bench near the entrance.

Marcus waited until she was out of earshot.

Then he faced Vanessa.

“You're going to tell me everything.””

“I have nothing to tell.””

“Then show me your phone.””

“No.””

“Why did the principal call you?””

“She calls because I'm her guardian when you're working.””

“You were receiving messages about my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And you hid them from me.””

“I didn't hide anything.””

Marcus pulled up the email.

“The school says you refused to attend a meeting.””

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

“They wanted to exaggerate.””

“Why?””

“Because Maya manipulated them.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She told them she was afraid of you.””

“She was upset.””

“She told them she was pushed.””

“She fell.””

“She told them there were multiple incidents.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You're going to destroy this family over the word of a ten-year-old?””

Marcus stared at her.

“No.””

His voice was steady.

“You destroyed it when you made her afraid of me.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“I never told her to fear you.””

“You told her I'd send her away.””

Silence.

“You told her I'd choose Noah.””

“I was angry.””

“You told her I was tired of her.””

“I didn't mean it.””

Marcus nodded.

“So you admit it.””

Vanessa looked away.

“That doesn't mean I hurt her.””

Marcus glanced at Maya.

She sat on the bench, swinging her feet.

One new sneaker tapped softly against the floor.

He looked back at Vanessa.

“Did you push her?””

“No.””

“Did you make her search broken glass with her hands?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Did you tell her she had to earn shoes?””

“She needs responsibility.””

“That's not an answer.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Yes.””

Marcus's jaw clenched.

“Why?””

“Because she takes things for granted.””

“She asked for thirty-four-dollar shoes.””

“She always wants something.””

“She was wearing shoes with a broken sole.””

“She could have waited.””

“For what?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“For Noah's next five pairs?””

Vanessa's face reddened.

“Don't bring my son into this.””

“You already did.””

Marcus picked up Noah's boxes.

“You bought him everything he pointed at.””

“He's my child.””

Marcus stared.

“And Maya is mine.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Maybe that's the problem.””

Marcus went completely still.

“What?””

“You're always choosing her.””

“She is my daughter.””

“She comes first.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Vanessa looked wounded.

“You never say that about me.””

“This isn't about you.””

“It always is.””

She turned toward Maya.

“Maya, come here.””

Maya didn't move.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“I said come here.””

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“No.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“She needs to listen.””

“She doesn't need to be afraid.””

“She lives in my house.””

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“Our house.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Not anymore.””

Marcus didn't respond.

She grabbed her purse.

“Fine.””

She started walking away.

Marcus called after her.

“Where are you going?””

“To get Noah.””

“Stop.””

She turned.

“What?””

“You're not taking either child anywhere.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can't tell me that.””

“I just did.””

She stepped closer.

“You don't have custody tonight.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Check your email.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

Another message had arrived.

This one wasn't from the school.

It was from a family court notification service.

His eyes moved across the screen.

Then stopped.

Vanessa watched him.

“I filed last week.””

Marcus looked up.

“Filed what?””

“Emergency custody.””

His face went cold.

“For Noah?””

“For Maya.””

Maya looked over.

“What is it?””

Marcus couldn't answer.

Vanessa smiled.

“She'll be living with me until the hearing.””

Maya's face drained of color.

“No.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Maya…”

She jumped up.

“No, Dad.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Come here.””

Maya backed away.

“No.””

“You need to listen.””

“No!””

The entire store seemed to turn toward them.

Maya ran to Marcus.

He caught her.

She buried her face against his shirt.

“Dad, don't let her take me.””

Marcus held her tightly.

“I won't.””

Vanessa's voice came from behind him.

“You better be careful what you promise.””

Marcus turned.

She held up her phone.

“There are things in that report you haven't seen.””

“What things?””

Vanessa smiled.

“You think you're the good parent because you bought her a pair of shoes?””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa lowered her phone.

“You should ask your daughter why she really doesn't want to go home.””

Maya went rigid in his arms.

Marcus looked down.

“Maya?””

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was staring past him.

At Vanessa.

And the look in her eyes wasn't fear this time.

It was shame.

Marcus gently lifted her chin.

“What aren't you telling me?””

Maya whispered,

“There's a room upstairs.””

Marcus frowned.

“What room?””

“The one Vanessa keeps locked.””

Vanessa's face changed instantly.

Marcus noticed.

He looked at her.

“Why is there a locked room?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Maya's voice dropped to almost nothing.

“She told me I'd never tell Dad what was inside.””

Marcus felt every muscle in his body tighten.

“What was inside?””

Maya looked at him.

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you afraid of it?””

Maya swallowed.

“Because I heard someone crying in there.””

Vanessa's face went white.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“Who was crying?””

Vanessa whispered one word.

“Nobody.””

But Maya was already shaking her head.

“Yes.””

May you like

She pointed toward Vanessa's purse.

“That's where she keeps the key.””
