Chapter 9: The Night Noah Disappeared
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“Noah wasn't sleeping?””
Vanessa said nothing.
The man held up the flash drive.
“Watch the video.””
Marcus took it.
“Who are you?””
The man hesitated.
“Darius.””
Vanessa whispered, “He's lying.””
Darius looked at her.
“You've been lying for two years.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Two years?””
Darius nodded.
“That's when Vanessa first contacted me.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Why?””
“She wanted money.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Marcus, I was desperate.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was going to fix it.””
“You brought this man into our home.””
“I didn't know what he would do.””
Darius laughed bitterly.
“You knew exactly what I would do.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Enough.””
He looked at Darius.
“Show me the video.””
Darius plugged the drive into Marcus's laptop.
The screen flickered.
A timestamp appeared.
*11:47 P.M.*
Marcus recognized the hallway.
Their hallway.
The camera angle was hidden near the staircase.
Vanessa walked into frame.
She was carrying a suitcase.
Marcus stared.
“That's our house.””
Darius nodded.
“Keep watching.””
Vanessa entered Noah's bedroom.
A minute later, she came out carrying Noah.
The boy was asleep against her shoulder.
Marcus's breath caught.
Maya stood behind him.
“That's Noah.””
Vanessa whispered, “Turn it off.””
Marcus didn't.
On screen, Vanessa walked downstairs.
She opened the front door.
A black sedan waited outside.
Darius looked at Marcus.
“That's my car.””
Marcus turned.
“You took Noah?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The video continued.
Vanessa handed Noah to someone outside.
The figure stepped into the porch light.
Marcus leaned closer.
His face changed.
It was *Darius*.
Maya gasped.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You told me Noah was asleep.””
“He was.””
“You gave him to Darius.””
“I had no choice.””
Marcus's voice cracked.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa began crying.
“I needed to protect him.””
“From what?””
“His father.””
Darius stepped forward.
“You mean from me.””
“You threatened me.””
“I asked for my son.””
“You weren't safe.””
Darius pointed toward the screen.
“Then why did you hand him over?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“I thought I could get the money.””
Marcus stared.
“What money?””
“Thirty-eight thousand.””
The room went silent.
Darius shook his head.
“She promised she'd let me see Noah if I paid her.””
Marcus looked horrified.
“You sold your son.””
Vanessa screamed.
“I was trying to save us!””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were trying to save yourself.””
Maya started crying.
Marcus immediately turned toward her.
“Baby, come here.””
She stepped into his arms.
Darius watched them.
“There’s more.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Darius pointed at the screen.
“Keep watching.””
The timestamp jumped.
*12:13 A.M.*
Darius carried Noah back into the house.
But he didn't take him upstairs.
He walked toward the locked room.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa covered her face.
Darius answered.
“Because I found out she was using Noah to pressure you.””
Marcus's heart stopped.
“What?””
Darius looked at Maya.
“She wanted your father to believe Noah needed more attention. She wanted you pushed aside.””
Maya stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa whispered,
“Because I thought if Marcus loved Noah more…”
She couldn't finish.
Marcus did.
“You thought I'd give you more money.””
Vanessa nodded.
Darius continued.
“And when Maya started asking questions, Vanessa panicked.””
Marcus looked at the photographs.
“The surveillance.””
Darius nodded.
“She was documenting Maya.””
“Why?””
“To build a case against you.””
Marcus felt cold.
“She wanted custody.””
“She wanted full control.””
Maya whispered,
“She told me Dad would send me away.””
Marcus held her tighter.
Darius reached into his pocket and pulled out another photograph.
“This is from the night she pushed Maya.””
Marcus took it.
The photograph showed Maya on the stairs.
Vanessa stood behind her.
Her hand was on Maya's shoulder.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You said she fell.””
Vanessa began shaking.
“I didn't mean to push her.””
“You pushed her.””
“She scared me.””
“She was ten.””
“I was angry.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You were angry.””
Vanessa sank onto the stairs.
“I didn't know how to stop everything.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
She was crying silently.
He knelt.
“I'm sorry.””
Maya shook her head.
“It's not your fault.””
“I should have seen it.””
“I tried to tell you.””
“I know.””
“You were always working.””
Marcus swallowed.
“I know.””
Maya touched his cheek.
“I didn't want you to be sad.””
That broke him.
He pulled her into his arms.
Behind them, Darius quietly said,
“There’s one last thing.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Darius held up his phone.
“I didn't take all those photographs.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who did?””
Darius looked toward the staircase.
“The person who gave me the first warning.””
“Who?””
Darius hesitated.
Then he said,
“Noah.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Darius showed him a recording.
Noah's small voice filled the room.
“I don't want Mommy to hurt Maya.””
Marcus's eyes widened.
The recording continued.
“She says Maya is bad.””
A pause.
Then Noah whispered,
“But Maya isn't bad.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus looked at her.
“You taught him to hate his sister.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Darius stopped the recording.
“That's not the last part.””
He played it again.
Noah's voice returned.
“I put the picture under the door because Dad has to know.””
Marcus stared at Maya.
“You knew about this?””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Darius nodded.
“Noah was the one leaving the clues.””
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
“Where is he now?””
Darius's face changed.
“He's not here.””
Marcus stood.
“Where is my son?””
Darius looked at Vanessa.
She began crying.
Marcus grabbed her shoulders.
“Where is Noah?””
Vanessa whispered,
“I sent him away.””
“To where?””
“I thought he'd be safer.””
“Where?””
She pointed toward the front door.
“Your mother's house.””
Marcus froze.
His mother had died three years earlier.
There was no house.
He slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“You're lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Then where?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“He's with someone you trust.””
Marcus's phone rang.
The caller ID showed a number he knew.
His sister.
Marcus answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice came through, frantic.
“Marcus, where are you?””
“What happened?””
“I found Noah.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Where?””
She began crying.
“He's here.””
Marcus exhaled.
“Is he okay?””
“He's safe.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Darius.
But his sister's next sentence made every person in the room go silent.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“He keeps asking for you.””
A pause.
“And he says Vanessa told him never to tell you who the real father is.””
Marcus looked at Darius.
Darius slowly lowered his eyes.
Marcus's voice became barely audible.
“What did Noah say?””
His sister answered.
“He said…”
She stopped.
May you like
Then whispered,
“‘Dad, the man in the locked room isn't my father.’”
