Chapter 3: The Message She Couldn't Explain

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Sunlight spilled across the bedroom floor, illuminating the torn diploma, the crushed graduation cap, and Vanessa's expensive gown lying in a heap beside them.

My father held his phone in one hand.

Vanessa held hers in both.

The message remained visible on her screen.

*The school documents are gone. Now make sure he never sees the account.*

My father repeated the final two words.

"The account.""

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"Marcus, this is ridiculous. You don't know who sent that message.""

"Then tell me.""

"It's a business matter.""

"What business matter involves hiding school documents from me?""

She looked toward Kayla.

It was a quick glance, barely a second long.

But my father caught it.

"Kayla," he said.

"Do you know what this is about?""

Kayla's eyes widened.

"No.""

Vanessa immediately stepped in.

"She's eighteen. She doesn't know anything about my business.""

"Then you shouldn't have any trouble explaining yours.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You're humiliating me in front of your daughter.""

I almost laughed.

She had torn my diploma apart in front of Kayla, then called me dramatic for crying. Now she was worried about being humiliated.

My father looked at me.

"Ariya, stay right here. I need to understand what's happening.""

I nodded, though my hands were still shaking.

He turned back to Vanessa.

"Unlock your phone.""

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

My father lowered his chin.

"Why not?""

"Because you don't own me.""

"You're right. I don't. But if someone is sending you messages about hiding documents and concealing an account, you can either explain what that means or admit there's something you don't want me to see.""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then closed.

For the first time since she'd entered my bedroom, she seemed to understand that she couldn't talk her way out of the situation simply by talking louder.

She slipped her phone into her handbag.

"I'm not discussing this while you're angry.""

"I'm not angry.""

"You're threatening me.""

"No," he replied.

"I'm asking you a question.""

He held up his phone again.

"Who sent the message?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

My father glanced at the screen.

"You received it less than a minute ago.""

"I receive dozens of messages.""

"Then one more question shouldn't be difficult. What account?""

She looked at him with an expression I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not the ordinary fear of being caught in a lie. Something deeper. Something that seemed to reach beyond this bedroom, beyond the ruined graduation decorations, beyond the argument we were having.

She knew the answer.

And she knew he wouldn't like it.

I pushed myself to my feet, still holding the pieces of my diploma.

"Dad?""

He turned toward me immediately.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Why would someone mention school documents?""

Vanessa snapped her head around.

"Don't start asking questions you don't understand.""

My father stepped between us.

"She can ask whatever she wants.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"This is exactly what I'm talking about! You never let me discipline her. You treat her like she's incapable of doing anything wrong.""

I stared at her.

"You destroyed my diploma.""

"And you're still standing here arguing with me!""

"Because you destroyed it!""

My voice cracked through the room.

The silence afterward felt enormous.

I hadn't shouted at Vanessa in years. I'd learned to keep my voice low, to choose words carefully, to avoid giving her any excuse to tell my father I was disrespectful.

But I was tired.

Tired of being told to understand her when she never tried to understand me.

Tired of apologizing for achievements that made her uncomfortable.

Tired of being afraid in my own home.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

"You don't need to defend yourself anymore.""

Vanessa stared at us.

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

"Fine," she said.

"You want an explanation? I'll give you one.""

She tapped the screen several times, then turned it toward him.

"There. It's a message from someone who works with me. The account is a private investment account. It has nothing to do with Ariya.""

My father didn't take the phone.

"Then why does the message mention school documents?""

"Because the school documents are part of a separate issue.""

"What issue?""

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

"I told you, it's business.""

He shook his head.

"That's not an explanation.""

She snatched the phone back.

"You've spent your entire life building a company. You know there are confidential matters you can't discuss with everyone.""

"Everyone doesn't mean my wife.""

"Exactly," she said, seizing on the word.

"Your wife. The person who has stood beside you for years while you poured money into your daughter's education.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

There it was again.

My education.

My scholarship.

My future.

Everything I'd earned was being turned into a debt I supposedly owed Vanessa.

My father didn't take the bait.

"Are you saying the account has something to do with Ariya's education?""

Vanessa looked away.

That tiny movement told me more than her explanation had.

My father stepped closer.

"Answer me.""

"No," she whispered.

"Look at me.""

She lifted her eyes.

"Does the account have something to do with my daughter's education?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Then she said, "You need to be careful about what you think you know.""

My father went completely still.

It was the first time I'd ever heard Vanessa threaten him without disguising it as concern.

He took out his phone again.

"I'm going to call the school.""

Vanessa lunged forward.

"Don't!""

Her shout startled all of us.

My father stared at her.

"Why?""

She backed away, breathing hard.

"Because you don't understand what they'll tell you.""

"Then help me understand.""

She pressed one hand against her forehead.

"I was trying to protect this family.""

"From what?""

She didn't answer.

Kayla finally stepped away from the doorway.

"Mom, just tell him.""

Vanessa spun toward her.

"I said be quiet!""

Kayla flinched.

My father noticed.

His expression changed, not with anger this time, but with a kind of cold recognition.

He looked from Vanessa to Kayla, then back to the message.

"Both of you knew something was happening.""

"No," Kayla said quickly.

"I didn't know everything.""

The words hung in the air.

My father slowly turned toward her.

"Everything?""

Kayla covered her mouth.

Vanessa looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.

I felt my pulse hammering in my ears.

"Dad," I whispered, "what does she mean?""

He didn't answer me immediately.

Instead, he walked to the bedroom door and closed it.

The click of the latch sounded unnaturally loud.

"No one is leaving this room until I understand why someone is hiding documents connected to my daughter's education.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

But they weren't the tears she'd made me shed.

They were the tears of someone who had just watched a carefully constructed lie begin to collapse.

My father held up his phone.

"I'm calling the school now.""

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

"Marcus, please. If you make that call, everything will change.""

He looked down at her hand until she released him.

"Everything already changed when you tore up that diploma.""

He dialed.

The call rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman's voice answered through the speaker.

"Good afternoon, Westbrook Academy. How may I help you?""

My father identified himself and asked to speak with the registrar.

Vanessa sat down abruptly on the edge of my bed.

Kayla stared at the floor.

I clutched my torn diploma so tightly that the paper bent between my fingers.

A moment later, the registrar returned to the line.

"Mr. James," she said cautiously, "we've been expecting your call.""

My father's eyes narrowed.

"Expecting my call?""

"Yes, sir. We received a request concerning Ariya's graduation records and the scholarship documents associated with her enrollment.""

My heart seemed to stop.

My father looked directly at Vanessa.

"What request?""

The registrar paused.

Then she said, "The request was submitted under your wife's authorization.""

Vanessa shot to her feet.

"Hang up the phone!""

My father raised one hand, silencing her.

The registrar continued.

"There's another issue, sir. The scholarship account was flagged this morning because of a discrepancy in the authorization records.""

My father's face turned rigid.

"What kind of discrepancy?""

A long pause followed.

May you like

Then the registrar said something that made my father slowly lower himself into the nearest chair.

"According to our records, Mr. James, the person who authorized the transfer of Ariya's scholarship funds was—"
